enthusiasts

a home

Construction is underway, and the dirt is being moved to build Motorsports Gateway Howell, an ambitious project that those behind it say will bring auto enthusiasts, tourists and jobs to Livingston County.

“What makes Motorsports Gateway Howell unique is the combination of the three distinct zones,” said Motorsports Gateway Howell CEO and co-founder, Jordan Dick.

“There’s a private zone for members and owners, a commercial zone for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and aftermarket operations, which will create jobs, and a zone for public indoor and outdoor recreation and entertainment. Other developments might only have the space or be in a location to incorporate only one or two of the zones.”

Motorsports Gateway Howell is being built on more than 270 acres that Dick said is an ideal location for in-state and out-of-state visitors.

“We are adjacent to Interstate 96, less than 10 minutes from Livingston County Airport and only one mile from downtown Howell,” Dick said.

Dick, a formula car driver himself, founded and ran JD Racing Indoor Karting, before turning his complete attention to Motorsports Gateway Howell. His business partner on the project is father, Mark.

As for what inspired the project, Dick said, “We are driven to help grow the automotive enthusiast community by creating a place for people to gather and create lifelong memories.”

Dick said the City of Howell and LIvingston County have been quite supportive of the venture.

Howell City Manager Erv Suida said the project was presented to the city as part of a purchase agreement for the property, which the city formerly owned. At that time, Howell had two developers submit offers for the city council and community to consider.

“The City Council selected Motorsports Gateway unanimously and has been excited about the project ever since,” Suida said. “Council members felt strongly that this project was unique enough in its conceptual design to fit in a very difficult site surrounded by natural gas wells, gas pipelines and several wetland areas.”

Suida said Howell staff continues to work with the Dicks as they navigate through construction approvals and implementation. Also lending helping hands has been staffers from Ann Arbor SPARK, who have been a main point of contact guiding the developers through the process to get the project rolling along.

With that metaphorical pit crew of assistance, Dick said Motorsports Gateway Howell is driving towards having the south circuit of a track paved for members around the end of this summer.

The south circuit is approximately 1.66 miles and typically will be dedicated for drivers club members. It is part of the initial phase which Dick said also includes a performance driving circuit, which is the main attraction of the automotive district, an automotive country club and a garage condo community.

“Garage condos are a safe and secure place for automotive enthusiasts to store or showcase their treasured vehicles. Owners will typically customize their units to host family, friends, colleagues, or clients for lounging or special events,” Dick said.

The circuit will eventually be expanded to run more than 2 miles. The area will also feature a clubhouse and rentable garages. Corporate and individual club memberships are available, Dick said.

The second phase will be the automotive innovation park and could include OEM and aftermarket companies, while the third and final phase will be a mixed use entertainment zone and could include a hotel, a family entertainment center, retail shops, restaurants and mixed use residential.

With so much in the works, Ann Arbor SPARK director for business development, Livingston County, Marcia Gebarowski said the project will have a positive impact in terms of taxes collected, jobs created and visitors coming to Howell and Livingston County.

Suida said the city anticipates not only the creation of hundreds of jobs and employment opportunities from the development but a large boost to the local economy with an entirely new clientele of customers looking for goods and services.

“This development will provide the push needed to see smart growth in our South Michigan Corridor consistent with our master plan that will provide a true gateway into our amazing and award-winning downtown,” Suida said.

Suida said the driving circuit phase will offer an impressive and challenging driving circuit that will quickly gain worldwide notoriety for its exciting 2.1 mile course.

“This will make Howell a common name in the automotive world,” Suida said. “We already hear tales of people asking about hanger space at the County Airport and local businesses anticipating the needed boost in our local economy.”

In turn, the driving circuit will be the catalyst for the automotive innovation district that will bring hundreds of jobs to the area by offering access that no other industrial district can offer, Suida said.

“Lastly, the entertainment district will not only bring jobs to Howell, but continue making Howell a destination community that offers an incredible historic downtown, including the vast array of entertainment options all located in our small town community,” Suida said.

Suida said the unique nature of the project and its location will be another strong reason Howell is on the map.

“Howell is a destination city that has already won several national and state awards for its Main Street, downtown, innovative projects and redevelopment readiness status,” Suida said. “Howell is known as a community on the cutting edge of innovation while maintaining a rural hometown feel.”

“The Motorsports Gateway Howell project and the location will simply accent the small town charm that we all love and allow us to share it with others from not only all over the nation, but around the globe,” Suida said.

Area providers offer variety of healthcare options for

Residents

Two major healthcare providers serve Howell and Livingston County.

Trinity Health Livingston in Howell is licensed for 66 beds and is Livingston County’s only full-service hospital.

“As such, it has the experience, expertise and advanced care resources needed to respond to the most serious healthcare needs of the community,” said Bobby Maldonado, Regional Communications and Public Relations Manager, Trinity Health Michigan.

That includes diagnostic imaging, laboratory and pathology, an emergency department, surgery — including robotic surgery — and an ICU, he said.

In April, officials held a groundbreaking celebration for a new state-of-the-art facility being built next to the existing hospital. According to published reports, participants used the same shovel that broke ground on the existing hospital in 1956.

Once complete, the new hospital will be connected to the existing Trinity Health Medical Center — Brighton campus, Maldonado said.

According to the Trinity Health Michigan website, the new building will have 56 acuity adaptable beds, eight licensed operating rooms, 18 existing short stay unit beds, a chapel, cafeteria and additional shell space for future growth. It is expected to open in 2026.

The $230 million project will result in a four-story, 174,000-square-foot expansion, while the current medical center also undergoes renovations. It will offer primary care, general medicine, gynecologic surgery, cardiology and intensive cardiac rehab, orthopedics, minimally invasive general surgery, imaging bariatric surgery and oncology care.

Ascension Medical Center in Howell opened for outpatient care in Mary 2017.

“The outpatient center offers primary care services of family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics. Specialties include cardiology, pulmonology and audiology,” said Airielle Taylor, Senior Specialist, Public Relations, Ascension Michigan. “Other services include diagnostic imaging — with 3-D mammography — lab, physical therapy and occupational health.”

Taylor said it is important to note that patients coming into the medical center have access to advanced specialty care available at Ascension Providence in Southfield and Novi, too. This includes comprehensive stroke care.

Ascension Medical Center also offers online chat features, making it easier to find care.

“People who need help scheduling a new appointment or health screening or finding a specialist nearby can now connect with us using this online chat feature,” Taylor said.

People can chat with a care navigator online from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, seven days a week to find care close to home and schedule, reschedule or cancel appointments. They can also chat with us by texting “appointment” to 314315, if it’s convenient, Taylor said.

The economic outlook for Howell and other towns in Livingston County remains bright.

So says staff from Ann Arbor SPARK, which, in partnership with the Economic Development Council of Livingston County (EDCLC), provides economic development services and resources to Livingston County communities, businesses and residents. The two organizations along with the chamber work together to attract new businesses and to help retain and expand existing businesses.

“Things are stable and look good here,” said Marcia Gebarowski Director, Business Development Livingston County with Ann Arbor SPARK.

Howell is Livingston’s county seat. Gebarowski said the county is home to an aging population and a good many empty nesters.

“Still, it’s growing steadily, population-wise. And in terms of employment, pretty much anyone who wants a job is working,” she said.

Gebarowski said Livingston County residents who are employed typically work elsewhere in the region. Jobs most commonly found in the county are in service, hospitality and healthcare.

Infrastructure-wise Gebarowski mentioned multiple road construction projects are underway, contributing to the economy and potential growth.

Work includes upgrades to US Route 23 and Interstate 96. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation website, this includes work that is “part of MDOT’s ongoing $162 million investment to extend the US-23 Flex Route from north of 8 Mile Road to I-96.”

Gebarowski said the region is also trying to make breakthroughs in localizing public transportation. As an example, she pointed to MTA (Mass Transportation Authority) bus routes between LIvingston County and neighboring Genesee County that bring about 1,000 people to and from their jobs and include stops by 16 businesses. The Howell Chamber was instrumental in the development and creation of this partnership that allows Livingston County business to tap into another workforce market.

In terms of education, the county is served by five top-notch school districts, Gebarowksi said.

Nick Joblonski, Livingston County Business Development Manager and SPARK Entrepreneurial Services Business Manager, mentioned that in May 2022, Brighton High School opened a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Center to offer career and education pathways in the fields of today and tomorrow.

Gebarowksi noted the high school also provides training and education in automotive technology, robotics and graphic arts.

As such, Gebarowski said that most students who graduate from Livingston County schools head off to college. Some stay very local at small, private Cleary University in Howell. A good many others head not too far away and within driving distance to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan State in East Lansing or Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti.

As for the local housing market, Gebarowski said, “Housing remains on fire. Homes are staying on sale for just a few days.” Rentals are pretty much rare to find, she said, and filled fast.

Toward that, Gebarowski said that for the last five to six years there have been efforts underway to address the “missing middle,” encouraging builders and towns to allow unique products and greater population density to provide housing affordable for new college graduates and other first-time buyers.

And adding to the local economy will be Motorsports Gateway Howell. The unique project is being built in phases. It will feature a driving circuit for members, garage condominiums built trackside, a business park and mixed use areas for shopping, dining, indoor and outdoor recreation, entertainment and other enterprises.

Howell Public Schools offers a world of possibilities to its students. Livingston Educational Service Agency in Howell is a service agency specializing in education.

The group offers a range of programs including support services for infants and toddlers, tools for residents with special needs, paths for students seeking a non-traditional school environment or students exploring careers and classes for adult learners looking to continue their education.

The agency is made up of educators, collaborators, number crunchers, school bus drivers, techies, and relationship builders who are “welcoming, passionate, inclusive, progressive, and dedicated to the education and success of each student in Livingston County.”

Livingston Educational Service Agency was formed as a county school in 1942 and officially organized as an educational service agency under Michigan Law in 1962. It is a large organization, deeply rooted in the education system in Livingston County as well as the State of Michigan.

“We are committed to working for the greater good. We’re motivated by a culture that empowers us to do the right thing for the right reason, unleash our and others’ potential, value others’ thoughts and opinions, and encourages new approaches to improve how we serve our students, families, and local communities and school districts,” the website said.

Great Start Livingston is a partnership of local community agencies, businesses, early childhood and K-12 educators, and parents. The purpose is to build community connections that support families of young children.

Great Start Livingston encompasses the Great Start Collaborative and the Great Start Parent Coalition. Both groups work together toward achieving a comprehensive early childhood system aligned to address all the factors that influence a child’s readiness for school and life.

The group’s mission is to assure a coordinated system of community resources and supports to assist all Livingston County families in providing a great start for their children from prenatal to age eight. Its vision is to give a great start to every child in Livingston County, to ensure they are “safe, healthy and eager to succeed in school and in life.

The mission at Cleary University is “To provide an intimate and inclusive, student-centered business education that instills the values of The Cleary Mind™ in our community.”

The vision at the school is to inspire students “to dare to transform the status quo,” according to the school’s website.

Patrick Roger Cleary founded the institution in 1883 as The Cleary School of Penmanship to provide a business education. The university welcomes “any and all students eager to build skills that will be competitive in the marketplace.”

The Motto at Lansing Community College is, “Where success begins.”

The college “provides high-quality education ensuring that all students successfully complete their educational goals while developing life skills necessary for them to enrich and support themselves, their families, and their community as engaged global citizens,” according to its website.

One of the largest community colleges in Michigan, LCC serves more than 14,500 each year and offers more than 200 associate degree and certificate programs. The school’s vision is to serve “the learning needs of a changing community.”

Event Showcase

Annual Howell-area events bring the community together throughout the year

From balloons filling the sky to a farmers market set in a historic downtown, the Howell area offers a plethora of events for locals and visitors.

“All of the events are enriching for the community and provide a quality of life for the community,” said Janelle Best, president of the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce. “They help put Livingston County on the map, bringing people into Howell [and the county], driving economic development in our area.”

Best describes a recent conversation with an individual who said attending the Festival of Lights Parade 30 years ago, led to the family relocating to Howell.

“We want to make experiences something to remember, so people will come back to visit, shop and eat in our restaurants and downtown,” Best said.

For the past 39 years (with the exception of 2020 due to COVID-19), an idea generated by a local pilot, the president of the chamber of commerce and a group of local businesses owners has continued to flourish in Howell during the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest.

Now sponsored by the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce and hosted on the grounds of Howell High School, the event has grown to become an annual tradition within the community.

Best said people travel from all over to compete in Howell during the last full weekend in June.

“We have a lot of local pilots, but this pulls in pilots from all over the United States,” Best said. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase Howell.”

The three-day festival includes a mix of morning and evening balloon launches. While the launches starting Friday evening to Sunday morning are for points, the evening launch on Sunday is considered just a fun flight.

During the evening flights, pilots take off from the school. For the morning launches, pilots take off at a designated area and “fly-in” to the festival grounds.

Beyond balloons, Best said, the event includes a mixture of moving parts such as an arts festival, open air market, live music, a food court, carnival, skydiving teams, magic shows and a family fun zone.

In fact, Best describes it as a community-wide party which benefits the entire region.

“It’s a huge economic driver for Livingston County,” she said. “It’s a great way to showcase all the things we offer here.”

Daily admission is $5 per person (cash only) or a weekend wristband is $10 per person. Children 3 and under are free. Carnival rides are an additional fee.

New this year, organizers developed a mobile app to create a “greener, cleaner and more efficient” paperless system for guests. It included mapping, food vendor lists, open air marketplace listings, up-to-date entertainment and push notifications for launch times.

As a way to kick off the holiday shopping season, chamber officials host the annual Fantasy of Lights on the Friday following Thanksgiving.

Taking place in downtown Howell, the event includes a multitude of floats, each lit with a minimum of 5,000 holiday lights.

In the hours leading up to the parade, downtown boasts a festive holiday atmosphere for all ages to enjoy complete with live entertainment, letter-writing to Santa station, children’s craft activities, delectable food truck options, and even a chance to meet live reindeer.

Best said it’s designed to support shopping downtown, in order to strengthen small businesses, as more than 35,000 people attend the holiday extravaganza.

“It’s a very heartwarming community tradition,” she said, adding 2023 will mark 40 years for the event that comes complete with a Hallmark movie vibe.

In the evening, the Fantasy 5K Run and one mile walk gives runners of all ages a chance to dress up in crazy and elaborate holiday attire. Participants are encouraged to wear holiday apparel, costumes and lights to race along the parade route.

The parade then kicks off at 7 p.m., giving attendees a chance to watch the lighted floats all while sipping on their favorite holiday beverage.

From the first Sunday in May to the last in October, people have a chance to purchase locally produced items at Howell’s Sunday Farmers’ Market.

Sponsored by the chamber, the market takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on State Street in downtown Howell, throughout the six-month season.

Best said market officials strive to feature locally grown produce, bedding plants and flowers, as well as homemade goods and crafts made by artisans and crafters.

The vendors are set up against the backdrop of the historical Livingston County Courthouse in downtown Howell, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
