Echoing Davis’ point is Alishia Daniel with Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital. “I am originally from Mecklenburg County and my job brought me to Halifax County,” says Daniel. “I love how everyone in the community is so close-knit. When things happen, the community pulls together. My co-workers have become my best friends.”

Even the kids I teach now, I get to see at Walmart and just talk to them. I love working here.”

From the Classroom to Career and Beyond

Schools Provide a Foundation for College
and Career Readiness

Education in Halifax County is a cornerstone of community development, reflecting a commitment to fostering knowledge, skills, and opportunities for residents. From early childhood programs to higher education initiatives, the county places a strong emphasis on creating an educational environment that nurtures intellectual growth and prepares individuals for success.

At the elementary level, instruction is focused on the four core areas of reading, math, science, and social studies. Instructional technology, STEM, and the arts are also integral components of the elementary program. The Halifax County Middle School utilizes a modified transitional team approach in grades 6-8 to bridge the transition between elementary school and high school. Middle school students are offered a wide range of related-arts and Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes in addition to the core courses of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. The Go-Tech Lab gives students the opportunity to take a deeper dive into STEM related careers.

At Halifax County High School, students in grades 9-12 are exposed to a vast array of academics, fine arts, vocational, and internship opportunities. College prep, advanced placement, and dual enrollment coursework are offered to students while attending high school beginning as early as ninth grade. At the beginning of each student’s freshman year, they are enrolled in a Career Strategies course, which lays the foundation for essential skills development, career exploration, and goal setting to ensure a well-rounded and informed educational journey.

Career and technical offerings include Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Agriculture, Health Occupations, Welding, Automotive Technology, Building Trades, Mechatronics, and Cyber Security, as well as several opportunities in business and computer technology. HCHS is continuing to expand opportunities to meet the needs of the changing workforce based on feedback from employers and graduates.

Students begin exploring careers as early as elementary school and by middle school are exposed to career fairs, guest speakers, and job shadowing opportunities. Collaborative efforts have led to the development of various programs that introduce high school students to career and technical education and the workforce. Manufacturing Day in Halifax County provides a unique opportunity for local manufacturers to open their doors to high school students, offering insights into their operations, technologies, and the impactful role they play in the community.

The Career Tech Academy (CTA) at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) provides hands-on training in automation & robotics, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), energy systems technology, information technology, and welding for high school juniors and seniors. Students gain technical knowledge and industry recognized certifications. In their second year, students have the opportunity to participate in work-based learning.

SVHEC provides adult learners with a wide range of educational opportunities. Through partnerships with two community colleges and several Virginia universities, SVHEC provides a seamless pathway from an associate’s degree to a bachelor’s or graduate degree. A wide range of disciplines are available from Business Administration, Communication, and Education to Information Technology, Engineering, Nursing and much more.

The Center supports growth in the region’s workforce through its short-term job training programs in Automated Systems Technology, HVAC, information technology, and welding. These programs require no prerequisites, can be completed in less than a year, and provide an on-ramp to an in-demand career. Students gain valuable job skills and the industry recognized certifications that allow them to quickly transition into the workforce. In 2023 alone, SVHEC expanded its offerings to provide new certification opportunities in data analytics, computer programming, and aluminum welding.

Working directly with Halifax County employers, SVHEC provides customized workforce training solutions that help keep the local workforce strong. Customized workforce training has helped employers achieve lower turnover, decreased machine downtime, and increased cost savings.

Students looking to further their education can attend Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC), which offers several associate degrees, certificate programs, and workforce training classes. SVCC’s workforce industry credential programs include areas of study in Diesel Technician, Welding, HVAC, Medication Assistant, Nurse Aide Training (CNA), Phlebotomy, Power Line Worker, and Solar.

Students can also attend Danville Community College (DCC), a two-year institution that offers associate degrees, diplomas and certificates in more than 40 areas of study. DCC provides academic excellence in curriculum leading to a degree or certification in careers, offering excellent prospects for future employment. These career studies certificates include Advanced Manufacturing, Welding, Automation Robotics, EMS, Dental Assisting, Precision Machining, Nursing, transfer degrees, and more.

HEALTH CARE

At the Heart of Well-being

Plethora of Health Care Services Ensures Exceptional Care for All

Healthcare in Halifax County is characterized by a commitment to providing accessible and quality medical services to its residents. The county is home to various healthcare facilities, clinics, and a hospital that caters to the well-being of the community. Local healthcare professionals work diligently to offer a range of services, ensuring that residents have access to preventive care, medical treatment, and specialized services. The healthcare infrastructure in Halifax County reflects a dedication to promoting the overall health and vitality of the community, contributing to a higher quality of life for its residents.

Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital (SHRH) serves the counties of Charlotte, Halifax, and Mecklenburg. Sentara Health’s commitment to its communities will be strengthened over the next few years through major investments in a new acute care hospital that will be conveniently located near the current facility in South Boston. The flexible design of the new building ensures that they will continue to meet the changing healthcare needs of this community for many years to come.

Sentara’s commitment to patient-centered care is the backbone of SHRH. Fueled by the expertise of a well-established medical staff representing a variety of specialties, SHRH is focused on providing excellent care—a tradition honored throughout the hospital’s 70-year history.

“Providing high quality patient care every day to every patient is our focus,” says Brian Zwoyer, president of SHRH. “Patients know they can turn to Sentara for high-quality medical services right here in their community.”

Services offered within clinics and/or hospital will include Anesthesiology, Behavioral Health, Cardiology, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Dentistry, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Gynecology, Hematology/ Oncology, Infectious Disease, Infusion Services, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Occupational Medicine, Orthopedics, Pathology, Pediatrics, Pulmonology, Radiology, Rehabilitation, and Sleep Study.

Sentara expands beyond SHRH within the communities they serve. Sentara Cares is an initiative that focuses on advancing health equity and ensuring that all members of their communities have access to the resources they need to live their healthiest and most fulfilling lives. This is a key component to quality healthcare. Sentara Cares addresses healthcare issues every day, where people live—not just when patients are under care. Sentara Community Care (SCC) is another innovative model of care that integrates primary care and behavioral health services in established locations or through a mobile van. Launched in 2022, SCC increases the healthcare delivery system for our communities with the greatest need for care throughout Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina. Sentara developed this new model of care through a community-driven approach, utilizing feedback from community and faith-based leaders to better identify and understand the community’s needs and establishing partnerships to support them. The Halifax mobile care vehicle began accepting walk-ins and appointments in early 2024.

Located in the North Main Medical Plaza, Halifax Internal Medicine’s presence contributes significantly to the local healthcare landscape, offering residents a reliable and compassionate source for their medical needs in South Boston and the surrounding areas.

In 2024, Piedmont Access to Health Services, Inc. (PATHS) opened a new facility in Houghton Industrial Park in South Boston. The state-of-the-art facility offerings include adult medical, pediatric medical, behavioral health, dental, and obstetrics/gynecology as well as an onsite pharmacy.

Peaceful Pathways, a 23-hour stabilization center, ensures personalized care for individuals of all ages. From mental health and nursing assessments to psychiatric evaluations, care coordination, medication management, and a range of counseling options, including individual, group, and family sessions, Peaceful Pathways is a place where mental health matters. The innovative addition of GeneSight testing, offers personalized insights into medication effectiveness. Peaceful Pathways offers quality services to help at-risk individuals become productive and healthy members of their community.

Halifax County offers medical care in gastroenterology, leveraging the latest technology and specialized expertise to provide residents with top-notch healthcare services close to home. Southern Gastroenterology Associates, located in South Boston, specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the gastrointestinal system and liver. Patients are served by board-certified gastroenterologists, Drs. Suresh Jayatilaka and Bakul Patel, as well as two nurse practitioners, Whitney Myers and Seth Gupton. Drs. Long-standing industries such as Annin Flagmakers (formally Dettra) have been in the community since 1995. Annin’s 186,000 square foot facility provides jobs for nearly 200 and produces over 3,000 different products. Using state-of-the-art digital printers, Annin is capable of printing any design flag (state, international or custom).

Gloster Furniture located in Halifax County in 1999 and relocated to the Halifax County Industrial Park in 2008 enabling them to consolidate its sales, customer support, and distribution operations under one roof. Gloster’s South Boston facility serves as the corporate headquarters and cushion production facility. In addition, the Gloster Studio offers design industry professionals the opportunity to fully experience the Gloster brand.

Numerous other industries have been operating in Halifax County for decades, collectively enhancing the economic vitality of the region and offering employment opportunities for thousands of individuals. Visitors and residents need look no further than The Prizery for arts, culture, and live entertainment. This former tobacco warehouse finds new life as a performing arts center. The building houses a theater, art gallery, dance studio, and banquet hall. The 250-seat theater hosts stage plays, performances, and concerts. Local talent is highlighted in performances and in the art gallery, which features the work of artists of all mediums in rotating exhibits.

Recreation

Halifax County is home to a variety of attractions sure to entertain family and friends. From thrills at the track, to fishing our peaceful waterways, or simply relaxing at the movies, Halifax has something for you.

With two racetracks, it is no surprise that racing is an important part of the county’s heritage. South Boston Speedway served as the start for local racers who are now NASCAR legends. For over sixty-five years, South Boston Speedway has been providing short-track racing action for locals and visitors. VIRginia International Raceway is a multi-purpose road course offering professional and amateur auto and motorcycle racing, as well as a wide range of track events. Each year, VIR draws tens of thousands of spectators for some of the best road racing in the country.

The rural landscape of the county affords residents numerous ways to experience their natural surroundings. Staunton River State Park, one of the state’s original state parks, offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Visitors can spend the afternoon hiking, biking, on horseback, or fishing along the bordering rivers. The park’s main attraction is its designation as an International Dark Sky Park, the first of its kind in Virginia, certifying the sky above the park is perfect for stargazing.

For an outdoor experience closer to town, Edmund’s Park is another popular spot for outdoor recreation. There are several shelters available for family gatherings, in addition to a picnic shelter for larger events. The park offers a variety of activities for all ages, including walking trails, a disc golf course, playgrounds, a volleyball court, and a botanical garden.

Three rivers run through our county, forming the Southern Virginia Wild Blueway. This river network ultimately runs into Bugg’s Island Lake. These rivers offer unspoiled views of the local landscape, fishing opportunities, and chances to see native wildlife. Exploring these rivers and landscapes by canoe or kayak is a popular hobby among outdoor enthusiasts.

For indoor fun, the World of Sports is popular among locals for its fun, family-friendly activities. Mother Cluckers and Wister’s are one stop shops for seasonal décor and gifts, while nearby antique store The Mercantile and Vintage Market is an excellent choice for classic finds. New to downtown South Boston is Toasted Wine & Gift Shop. Stop by for wine, gourmet cheese, and special gifts.

Head towards Halifax and stop by the Antique Collective for a magical experience. Abbott Farm Suppliers in Halifax sells hunting and sporting goods, plant starters, and quality clothing that can withstand the elements or a day of hard work.

The county is also home to two farmers markets (Halifax Market Place and The Downtown South Boston Farmers Market) where freshly grown produce, baked goods, and artisan crafts can be found.

In addition to assisting tourists, The South Boston – Halifax County Visitor Center doubles as a gift shop. Local artisans and vendors are provided a space to sell their goods, ranging from homemade lotions from a local lavender farm to hand painted ceramic ornaments, locally raised beef, books penned by local authors, and a selection of wine from our county’s vineyards.

Food and Drink

Halifax County boasts an abundance of local restaurants, offering a surprisingly diverse culinary scene. Those seeking an upscale dining experience featuring inspired menus will enjoy locations such as Molasses Grill, the Mansion Restaurant at Berry Hill, or Virginia International Raceway’s Oak Tree Tavern. For a more casual experience, local favorites include the Cajun-inspired Badeaux’s Seafood and Grill, classic entrees and drinks at Beck’s Bar & Grill and Main Street Bar & Grill, Italian American fare at Italian Delight Family Restaurant and Viny’s, or authentic Mexican and Tex Mex at Mexico Viejo and Mi Caretta.

For breakfast, lunch, or coffee, we have a handful of charming cafes: The Packhouse, Southern Plenty Café, and The Busy Bean. And for those in a hurry, stop by Saddie’s Dairy Express or BeeBee’s Spot. Halifax County also has a wide selection of fast-food options. From traditional comfort food to inspired fare rivaling that of a metropolitan area, Halifax County truly has a variety of cuisine for every taste and budget.

Halifax County also has several options for locally made craft beverages. Factory Street Brewing Company in downtown South Boston offers eight craft beers on tap, all brewed on-site. Hunting Creek Vineyards, in the northern part of the county, offers a variety of wine. Patrons can sample wine in the tasting room or tour the cellar for barrel previews and library tastings. Lake Front Winery and Woodbine Vineyards, just on the other side of the Halifax County line, offer visitors a picturesque setting to enjoy locally produced wines. These wineries host events throughout the year, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy live music, food and wine pairings, and much more!

We’re also home to Springfield Distillery, which distills spirits from vodka to whiskey. The distillery offers tastings, or guests can enjoy seasonal cocktails, perfectly mixed by staff. In 2024, Springfield Distillery will open a new tasting room, enabling them to accommodate more visitors.

Halifax County boasts a range of distinctive venues suitable for events of all sizes, from weddings to business retreats.

The Barn at Hunting Creek Vineyards provides an ideal setting for intimate gatherings, featuring a stylishly converted barn with meeting space, private rooms, and a small kitchen. The vineyard’s outdoor spaces offer guests scenic views while they sip.

Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center, a National Historic Landmark, offers a stunning venue for weddings, corporate retreats, and special events. The resort features a grand ballroom, conference rooms, a courtyard, and catering options for private events. With 92 rooms and suites on-site, guests can enjoy various amenities, including a spa, workout center, pool, and dining facilities.

Factory Street Brewing Company is one of the community’s newest attractions. Built in the 1920s, this former tobacco warehouse beautifully restored. The brewery has ample indoor event space for receptions, meetings, or showers and a courtyard for outdoor activities.

For those seeking a rustic outdoor setting, Springfield Distillery stands out as a popular choice. From small business functions to large weddings, Springfield has options, including two cabins for overnight stays. This venue produces its own whiskey onsite against a backdrop of historic charm.

Sunnyview Inn and Events offers historic and natural drops for those desiring a classic event venue. Host a celebration on the lawn under a tent, in front of the mansion or rustic barn, or in the open air of the 16-acre property. Sunnyview also offers a relaxing Southern-style front porch to welcome you into this historic home. Downstairs, you’ll find a parlor and library for reading or conversation. Stay a night or two in one of Sunnyview’s suites.

The SOVA Innovation Hub caters to small business meetings, boasting modern facilities with unrivaled high-speed internet. This newly built facility provides training and meeting space tailored for businesses.

Virginia International Raceway, sprawling over an expanse nearly double the size of Central Park, offers versatile indoor and outdoor event spaces. Perfect for large gatherings, the property provides customizable menus, event planners, and trained catering staff. With onsite dining and lodging, guests have no need to leave the property. Groups can also experience thrilling activities on the property, like kart racing, shooting, and track experiences.

Fitness

Halifax County has excellent trails and outdoor areas for scenic walks and runs. The Tobacco Heritage Trail is one of many, and it is right in the middle of South Boston. The trail is 3.9 miles (7.8 roundtrip). You will experience history, wildlife, and the great outdoors while exercising.

The YMCA of South Boston/Halifax County has amenities for all ages. Members of the gym can enjoy swimming, a fully updated gym, and fitness classes. The YMCA also hosts multiple sports leagues throughout the year. Those without membership can pay to use the gym at a daily rate.

The Downtown Athletic Club in Halifax offers 24/7 access and specializes in powerlifting, bodybuilding, and strongman. It also offers massage therapy and training.

Events & Festivals

There’s always something going on in Halifax County, and local events are held around the county throughout the year. From historical reenactments to unspoiled stargazing sessions, and lively community festivals, it’s always a good time to be in Halifax.

The Crossing of the Dan takes place every February. Recreating a turning point in the American Revolution and an often-overlooked part of history, this reenactment celebrates General Greene’s race to and crossing of the Dan River in South Boston.

Every March (and October), Staunton River State Park hosts one of its star parties, a weeklong event that attracts stargazers and astronomers from across the country. One night a week, the public is invited to view celestial bodies through astronomer’s telescopes.

The Town of Halifax throws an Earth Day Extravaganza every April at the Halifax Market Place. The day is marked with fun and educational activities for the whole family, with activities, demonstrations, and opportunities to contribute to a more sustainable Halifax.

The Heritage and Antique Machine Festival, held in May, has delighted families for over 15 years. The three-day event displays antique farm equipment, cars, demonstrations, live music, and delicious food.

Independence Day is a cause for celebration around the county. Around dusk, locals are treated to music and a patriotic firework display over Constitution Square in Downtown South Boston. Alternatively, Patrick Henry’s Red Hill offers reenactments, activities for kids, food, music, and fireworks. Though not on July 4th, South Boston Speedway puts on a magnificent firework display after the race scheduled close to the holiday.

The end of July marks the county’s hallmark event, the Virginia Cantaloupe Festival. Locals and visitors alike convene at Berry Hill Resort for an evening of fun, live music, food, drinks, and delicious cantaloupes.

September brings the end of the growing season. To celebrate, the Harvest Festival is held in Downtown South Boston. Craft vendors and food trucks line Main Street, as bands perform on stages positioned around town. For many, the event serves as a kickoff to fall.

In October, the Halifax County Fair is held, a tradition spanning over 100 years. Families stroll the midway, playing games, riding rides, and snacking on food purchased from one of the many vendors.

As the year ends, several holiday events take place around the county. The Holiday Living Show, in November, features local and craft vendors selling homemade goods and décor. In December, communities host their own Christmas parades, such as South Boston, Alton, and Virgilina.
