Families, pets can enjoy dinner and a movie at 25 Drive In Theater
By Mike Danahey
There are only three drive-in movie theaters currently operating in all of South Carolina. Thanks to
Carolyn and Tommy McCutcheon, Greenwood is fortunate to be home to one of them.
The couple – known to locals as Mom and Pop – reopened the spot that is their 25 Drive In
Movie Theater in 2009, revitalizing a location that first screened movies in 1945 and that had sat
dormant for decades.
“We started off with a one-screen drive-in with a very small concession area. It had been closed
for over 25 years. Windows and doors were bashed in,” Carolyn said.
In 2011, the McCutcheons added a second screen. Three years later, they converted from showing 35 mm
films to digital projection and sound. In 2015, they added a third screen. In 2017, they built a covered
patio area that seats 100.
Prior to opening their drive-in, the McCutcheons had been in the restaurant business. Building on that
experience, 25 Drive In Movie Theater also became known for its eats.
“At our drive-in, it’s dinner and a movie like you have never had before,” Carolyn
said. “Our main draw is that we have a real restaurant on site. We serve everything from ribeye
sandwiches to grilled chicken salads.”
You can bring your pets to 25 Drive In Movie Theater, too, provided you clean up after them. Of course,
movies are a main draw.
“In 2017, we even showed a short 5-minute movie during the solar eclipse,” Carolyn
said.
Then there’s the nostalgia of seeing double features from the comfort of your car, outdoors on a
blanket under the stars or from the aforementioned patio. You can also get up and stretch your legs if
you want, without bothering other movie-goers, like you might indoors, Carolyn said.
Drive-in movies can also provide comfort during tough times.
“What kept us going during Covid was the need that the people had for us. People couldn’t
go home to see their family, but they could go home to the drive-in,” Carolyn said. “The
world was so scared. Mom and Pop weren’t. At our drive-in, children had a place to walk around
outside. They could see other children from a distance and know that everything would be OK. Sometimes,
the mothers just needed a hug and be told that everything would work out.”
With churches closed during the pandemic, 25 Drive In Movie Theater also hosted drive-in services.
“About 200 cars would be there. The preacher man would say, ‘Blow your horns if you love
Jesus.’ You wouldn’t believe the sound,” Carolyn said.
As such, during those days, Carolyn said 25 Drive In Movie Theater became the top-grossing theater in
the world.
These days, while Greenwood’s drive-in is doing well, the number of drive-in movie theaters
continues to dwindle. Carolyn belongs to the United Drive-In Theatre Owners Association and served on
its board of directors for a dozen years. From being part of that organization she learned that
currently there are about 270 drive-ins operating across the globe.
“We gain new ones every year, but overall, we are down from 312 two years ago. The number of
drive-ins is less every year,” she said.
Still, she remains optimistic, particularly for 25 Drive In Movie Theater.
The family owned and operated, cash-only business operates just Friday and Saturday nights. The season
begins in February, in time for Valentine’s Day, and for 2025 will end in October, after Halloween
time movies.
This year, the theater showed pre-summer blockbusters such as “Captain America; Brave New
World,” “Thunderbolts” and “A Minecraft Movie.” While the video game-based
“Minecraft” drew rowdy teen and pre-teen crowds at some indoor theaters across the nation,
that wasn’t the case in Greenwood.
“We didn’t have any problems with ‘Minecraft.’ Children here behave. They did
laugh. They did sing,” Carolyn said. “The teens were well-behaved because their parents were
with them. We don’t allow walk-ins or drop-offs at the 25 Drive In.”
25 Drive In Movie Theater, like most drive-ins, does rely on family and action movies to draw patrons.
“We have three screens, so we do horror as well. This spring release of ‘Sinners’ has
been a sleeper hit and has done well for us,” she said.
Summer is looking bright for 25 Drive In, too, with a batch of big budget movies coming out including
“Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” the live action reboots of “Lilo &
Stitch,” and “How To Tame Your Dragon,” Pixar’s animated “Elio,”
“From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” “Jurassic World Rebirth,”
“Superman,” “The Fantastic Four: First Step,” “Happy Gilmore 2,”
“Freakier Friday,” an animated live action “Smurfs,” “M3GAN 2.0,”
“The Bad Guys 2” and a remake of “Naked Gun.”
“I love being in this business. I enjoy watching that big screen light up, and I enjoy people who
visit us for a Friday or Saturday night at the movies,” Carolyn said.
“I enjoy watching that big screen light up, and I enjoy people who visit us for a Friday
or Saturday night at the movies.”

Connecting Uptown Oregon Station is designed to bring people, businesses and ideas together
By Mike Danahey
While many redevelopment projects start with spreadsheets, Oregon Station began with the belief that
Greenwood deserves curated, intentional space where shared experiences can unfold.
“Not transactional space – transformational space,” said Lesley Lane, Director of
Property Management for Greenwood Development and Executive Assistant to that organization’s
President, Bubba Self.
“Oregon Station began with Bubba’s vision for what this space could be. He asked me to
bring it to life,” Lane said.
Toward that, Greenwood Development is working within the bones of the old Dixie Hardware building to
transform the historic structure into a commercial community.
“A commercial community is exactly what it sounds like: commerce that invites community.
It’s not just businesses sharing a sidewalk, but a place where people gather, interact and connect
around shared experiences,” Lane said. “That can be live music on the lawn, a Saturday
brunch that turns into shopping, or just the casual rhythm of people bumping into each other in a place
that feels alive.”
The approach is rooted in Greenwood Development’s long history in the hospitality industry, which
is shaping every aspect of the project.
“The vision for Oregon Station began with something we couldn’t ignore, a fragmented
Uptown,” Lane said.
Over the past 20 years, Greenwood has seen wonderful pockets of energy develop throughout Uptown but no
true thread connecting them, Lane said.
“Oregon Station is our answer to that. It’s not just a building. It’s a bridge, a
place designed to connect people, businesses and ideas physically and emotionally across the
district,” Lane said.
Inspiration for the $6 million, privately funded Oregon Station project came from successful
redevelopments in other communities such as Greenville’s West End, Optimist Hall in Charlotte and
The Mill in Fountain Inn. Each of those places took aging or underutilized properties and transformed
them into vibrant districts where people gather, linger and spend their time, not just their money, Lane
said.
“But Oregon Station isn’t a replica. We were intentional about studying what worked
elsewhere and filtering it through the lens of our town,” Lane said. “Greenwood has its own
pace, its own charm and its own gaps in what it offers. This project was about filling those gaps, not
by copying, but by creating something that feels local, connected and distinctly ours.”
Those gaps are being filled with a carefully curated mix of restaurant, retail and entertainment
spaces, built to bring people together.
“Oregon Station is designed specifically for gathering, from the breezeway that draws you in, to
the lawn and outdoor stage ready for concerts, storytelling nights or community toasts. Every inch is
meant to encourage people to slow down and connect,” Lane said.
Details including swings, fire pits, Adirondack chairs and inviting shaded spots are being layered into
the design to make visits to Oregon Station memorable, Lane said, while gardens, water features and
patio dining areas bring texture and life to the development.
“We were intentional about scale, too,” Lane said. “The retail and restaurant spaces
are right-sized, walkable, approachable and with small business in mind. The project fits the rhythm,
charm, and personality of Greenwood. That’s what sets it apart.”
With that in mind, Greenwood Development is being thoughtful and deliberate in how it fills spots in
Oregon Station.
“This isn’t about filling square footage. It’s about creating a well-rounded,
complementary mix,” Lane said. “That means independent retailers with a distinct point of
view, restaurants that value both flavor and setting, coffee shops or tap rooms that become community
gathering places. We’re also open to wellness and personal service providers who are looking for a
space that feels approachable and people centered.”
As such, Greenwood Development is pushing toward an end-of-summer completion for construction, with
tenant buildout and fit-up beginning shortly thereafter, Lane said.
In the meantime, people can follow the project’s progress through videos posted to the Oregon
Station Facebook page.
“I believe people care more when they feel included. Development is often something that happens
to a community, announced only once it’s finished and polished,” Lane said. “I wanted
this to feel different. The Facebook videos are invitations to be part of the story of something built
with the community, not just for it.”
Lane said that this transparent approach is working.
“People stop me on the sidewalk or message us directly, asking questions or offering encouragement,” she said. “That kind of engagement is proof that Oregon Station already belongs to the community, even before the doors open.”
“A commercial community is exactly what it sounds like: commerce that invites community.
It’s not just businesses sharing a sidewalk, but a place where people gather, interact and
connect around shared experiences.”

New amenities set for next phase of work on Grace Street Park
By Mike Danahey
Sometime this autumn, the second phase of the redevelopment of Grace Street Park should be completed,
providing Greenwood area residents more opportunities for outdoor recreation and plain old fun.
New amenities will include a shelter with restrooms, pickleball courts, a volleyball court, playground
equipment, a skate park, a pump track for bicycles and skateboards and walking paths that will connect
to the existing park, according to an Index Journal report.
“With the park being 54 acres, there’s still a long way to go. But this adds six more acres
to the 15 that had already been redeveloped,” said attorney Billy Nicholson, president of the
Greenwood Parks & Trails Foundation.
According to the Foundation’s website, the City of Greenwood originally used the site at the
corner of Grace Street and the Highway 72 Bypass for a water filtration plant and a large park. In the
early 1900s, the site held a lily pond, a meadow and a stone arch bearing the name Oak Hill Park. From
the 1930s to the 1950s there was also a nine-hole municipal golf course that featured a scenic ninth tee
located on top of a bluff.
However, in the 1980s Greenwood’s Commission of Public Works (CPW) closed the water filtration
plant and moved it to Lake Greenwood. The physical plant and two man-made reservoirs were abandoned, and
the golf course closed.
The Foundation identified the acreage as a prime location for a regional park and gradually convinced
CPW and Greenwood that Grace Street Park would be an optimal use of the land. Past that, the Foundation
entered into a lease agreement with Greenwood in 2011 toward building the park.
Nicholson said the first phase of work was funded through about $400,000 in private grants and
individual donations, with volunteers providing about $500,000 in donated time and labor. That effort
included converting one of two former CPW reservoirs into a pond with an aeration fountain and creating
a walking trail.
Other Phase One features included adding a 55-car parking lot, drinking fountain, restrooms, a kiosk,
the pavilion overlooking the pond, a playground, a 2.2 mile mountain bike trail and a dog park.
“The dog park was one of the first things we finished, and it’s been very popular,”
Nicholson said.
He noted that Hurricane Helene’s damage in September 2024 included some done to the dog park.
That delayed installation of agility equipment which was recently put into place in the restored
area.
As for Phase Two, work began more than 10 years ago, with funding coming from the 2016 Capital Project
Sales Tax. More than $5.57 million was allocated for the construction and improvement of parks in Hodges
and Troy, Ninety Six Town Park and Foundry Park and Grace Street Park in Greenwood. Nicholson said about
$2 to $2.5 million of that funding has been used on the Grace Street Park project.
Before the 2016 Capital Project Sales Tax, the Foundation had already established more than 10 miles of
trails across five locations, along with Magnolia Park, West Cambridge Park and Phase One of Grace
Street Park. The trails and parks in Greenwood are now maintained by the City of Greenwood, with
participation by the County of Greenwood.
“The concentration now is on maintenance, and our goal for the next 5 to 10 years is to focus on
the trail and pedestrian path system, working to add more and to connect what we have,” Nicholson
said.
What makes these projects so rewarding is seeing their positive impact on the community, Nicholson
said.
Grace Street Park brings people out to bike, walk around the pond, and to sit near the pond and its
fountain to have lunch on a nice day, he said. It also brings people together from churches, businesses,
schools and clubs as volunteers working on park projects.
Students from Lander University have created sculptures and art installations for the park. Nichoson
said. And residents from local recovery centers have done volunteer work in Grace Street Park projects
as part of their therapy.
“I’m amazed by how widely used our parks and trails are and by the variety of people who
use them – particularly Grace Street,” Nicholson said.
“Our goal for the next 5 to 10 years is to focus on the trail and pedestrian path system,
working to add more and to connect what we have.”

Piedmont Technical College is building for a strong future
Piedmont Technical College (PTC) has embarked on an ambitious building program as it cements its role
as a premier institution that transforms lives and strengthens communities.
“This is truly an exciting time for our college,” PTC President Dr. Hope E. Rivers said.
“We are moving forward with several construction projects of varying sizes across multiple county
campuses that will expand hands-on learning spaces, enhance student experiences and support the
continued growth of key academic and workforce programs.”
As a comprehensive two-year college serving nearly 8,000 students annually, PTC offers training in the
latest technologies and exacting skill sets that are most sought after by employers. With a yearly
economic impact of $241 million, PTC contributes to the growth and development of the largest region in
the South Carolina Technical College System, including Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens,
McCormick, Newberry and Saluda counties.
After renovating the James C. Self Conference Center and updating the administration building’s
lobby and conference room on the Greenwood Campus last year, PTC officials are preparing to begin three
major capital projects in the coming months.
With a combined investment exceeding $50 million, these projects will add more than 67,000 square feet
of new facility spaces to support education, workforce training and community engagement. The projects
include:
Self Regional Healthcare Center for Health Sciences
Construction is slated to begin by September on a $16.1 million health sciences building on PTC’s
Greenwood Campus.
The two-story, 27,000-square-foot building is expected to have 10 simulation rooms, six skills labs
with collaborative teaching spaces, a catheterization and echocardiography lab as well as classrooms and
computer labs. It will provide valuable real-world educational opportunities for students enrolled in
programs such as nursing, cardiovascular technology, emergency services, radiologic technology,
respiratory care and surgical technology.
Self Regional Healthcare is purchasing and donating $1.3 million worth of equipment for the new
facility. Given the size of this donation, PTC officials are naming the new building as the Self
Regional Healthcare Center for Health Sciences.
“We are thrilled to partner with Piedmont Technical College on this vital initiative,” said
Dr. Matt Logan, president and CEO of Self Regional Healthcare. “The healthcare professionals who
learn and train in this new facility will go on to make a lasting impact, providing exceptional care
within the Self Regional Healthcare system and improving lives in our community for generations to
come.”
A major share of the funding for the Self Regional Healthcare Center for Health Sciences is coming from
a $11 million grant PTC received last year from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic
Development Administration to foster healthcare-workforce development. State funding also accounts for a
significant portion of the project’s financing.
Upon its completion in July 2026, the Self Regional Healthcare Center for Health Sciences will replace
PTC’s existing healthcare facilities built in 1991.
Family Life and Conference Center
A groundbreaking is set for September for a large-scale expansion and renovation of this facility on
PTC’s Greenwood Campus.
When completed in 2027, the $23 million project will result in the creation of a state-of-the-art
center with 41,000 square feet of flexible space for college and community events.
Saluda Center for Manufacturing Excellence
Work will start this fall on a $14 million facility that will significantly enhance PTC’s Saluda
County Campus.
The 22,635 square-foot center will house Machine Tool Technology and Mechatronics Technology programs.
It also will be equipped with a flexible laboratory space and an industrial laboratory space to allow
for future program expansion.
Several other building projects are on the horizon at PTC, including:
A Technical Innovation Center on the Greenwood Campus. This project, which is a partnership between PTC
and Greenwood County’s three school districts, will serve over 1,100 students. In addition to
expanding programs in a host of key areas, the center will act as a hub for Greenwood County’s
growing number of Dual Enrollment students.
A $15 million center for manufacturing excellence in Edgefield County.
A refurbished Library and Student Engagement Center on PTC’s Greenwood Campus.
Outdoor labs on the Greenwood Campus for PTC’s Building Construction Technology and Welding
programs.
Lander Students Recreate Virtual Campus in Minecraft
In another reality, Lander University can be visited by people from all over the world without leaving
their homes. Almost every building was crafted by Lander students.
Students in Dr. Walter Iriarte’s video game theory class spent the last month of the semester
putting their knowledge into practice and recreating Lander’s campus block by block in the
pixelated world of Minecraft.
Minecraft is one of the best-selling video games in the world and from wherever they are in the world,
its players will be able to explore Lander’s campus, meticulously crafted by students down to the
landscaping, people in the dining hall and iconic fountain.
The video game theory course began as a proposal from Iriarte after Lander President Richard Cosentino
held a meeting about virtual reality.
“Video games have played an important role in computer technology,” Iriarte said.
In the course, students learned about the theories that have been applied to video games, and explored
games to see those theories in action. The class even took a trip to a local arcade.
The students applied the theories when building Lander’s campus in Minecraft, hiding Easter eggs
– a surprise feature in games or movies – and creating mini-games visitors can play.
“One thing is for sure, when it comes to understanding concepts, especially in my course, it was
a great way for them to apply these theories and make them more tangible, make them a lot more
understandable,” Iriarte said. “Project-based learning is a huge factor when it comes to
teaching anything. Nowhere is it more relevant than in Minecraft.”
“I’ve noticed in my students that they’ve been able to articulate these heavy
theories that usually you learn in graduate school and I’m bringing it down to a level
that’s a lot more comprehensible,” he added.
Sage Cameron was one of the students who took the inaugural course because video games are one of his
biggest passions in life.
“The fact that the course was opening up to students, I was excited and wanted to be one of the
ones to try it out first,” he said.
Popularity, compatibility, affordability
There are multiple reasons Iriarte chose Minecraft for his course. Popularity, for one, because even
before the recent release of a feature film based on the game, it was one of the best-selling games in
the world. Iriarte pointed out video games don’t often have a long life-span before they begin to
lose relevancy and only a few mega-popular games see long-term success. Minecraft, first released almost
15 years ago, has seen that long-term success.
Another reason is the compatibility of Minecraft. It’s a cross-platform game, so players can
enjoy it from their smart phone, computer or from numerous gaming consoles. It’s also beginner
friendly.
“No matter what your social status is, no matter if you classify yourself as a pro-gamer or a
newbie, it doesn’t matter,” Iriarte said. “Minecraft is relatively easy to figure out.
And even once you do, there’s so many Easter eggs you can find.”
Minecraft is also relatively affordable when compared to many other popular video games. From about $7
on a smart phone to around $30 on consoles, Iriarte said most parents are willing to pay for a game that
encourages creativity.
Build it
Each student in Iriarte’s class was assigned a building on Lander’s campus to build in
Minecraft. As part of their build, they had to demonstrate one of the theories they had studied during
the semester.
“It’s a great way for people to realize that compared to high school or college,
there’s a lot of different ways to learn or express yourself,” student Brooks Grayson said.
“So not only did we create Lander on Minecraft, but in it we applied theories, so we’re able
to take what we’re learning and apply it practically. It’s a great way for people to see
there’s a lot of different ways to learn in college.”
Student CJ Stuart said the theories studied in the class can be applied to broader contexts than just
video games – they inform how you look at other pieces of media and real life.
All of the students in the course had some level of experience in the game before.
“I was very excited to start building Lander in Minecraft because the first thing I always did in
Minecraft was rebuild stuff,” said Kimberly Duclos. “I rebuilt my house in Minecraft, I
rebuilt my whole neighborhood, so this isn’t the first time I’ve done something like
this… I was very excited to do it again after so many years.”
Duclos was responsible for building Jackson Library in the Minecraft world and worked on landscaping
around campus.
Haylee Gower, who built the Minecraft world’s PEES building, said she actually went and walked
around the building and took photos to get an understanding of the inside. One challenge she faced was
replicating equipment using only Minecraft’s square blocks.
Grayson, who had less crafting experience than some of her classmates, spent a lot of time doing
unexpected research on Minecraft.
…And they will play
The video game theory course offers a fresh way to teach students about media and the rhetorical and
philosophical applications used in its production. A second benefit is that the world the students have
created will allow anyone to visit Lander’s campus in the virtual world.
“I think the Minecraft world is going to impact Lander in some pretty big ways,” Cameron
said.
The world can be used to get some younger people in the door, he said, especially younger people who
may be open to exploring colleges but not yet to the point of booking in-person tours.
“It’s a good tool for Lander to connect to the younger generation,” Gower said.
“More and more people are playing video games, regardless of if they’re a boy or girl or a
young person or old person, so I think it’s something really vital for us to connect to and start
using for us to get as big of an audience as we can at Lander because Lander is a really good school and
I think more people should go.”
Lander’s campus is changing – a handful of buildings are going to be under construction in
the next few years and they will be built in the Minecraft world once finished, Iriarte said.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how this project grows,” he said.

Self Regional HealthcareM\
The facility’s hands and minds are leading the community to better health
Self Regional Healthcare (SRH) is a comprehensive, independent, not-for-profit health system serving
nearly 300,000 residents in South Carolina’s Lakelands region.
The three-hospital system includes a 358-bed main hospital, two 25-bed critical access hospitals, a
post-acute care facility and more than 3,000 employees. Over 250 physicians provide care across 40-plus
medical specialties, including internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, cardiology, oncology,
orthopedics and neonatology. Services also include virtual care and advanced capabilities such as Level
II emergency care, a Level III trauma center, and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit.
The SRH health system has distinguished itself as a leader in clinical excellence, patient safety, and
integrated care through prestigious accreditations, certifications, and national recognitions.
SRH’s honors span cardiology, stroke care, imaging, surgery, oncology and rehabilitation,
reflecting a strong commitment to evidence-based practices and compassionate, high-quality care.
Recognitions include national designations from the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart
Association, the Leapfrog Group, Healthgrades, the American College of Surgeons, Blue Cross Blue Shield,
and the College of American Pathologists. These achievements highlight the skill of Self
Regional’s clinicians and reinforce its mission to deliver exceptional care to the community.
In addition to these distinctions, SRH serves as the Lakelands hub for healthcare education, offering
nationally recognized training programs alongside strong academic partnerships. SRH is home to South
Carolina’s premier Family Medicine Residency Program (ranked among the nation’s top
performers by the American Board of Family Medicine) as well as a Primary Care Sports Medicine
Fellowship and a Postgraduate Pharmacy Residency (PGY-1), all of which provide residents and fellows
with hands-on, patient-centered training under board-certified faculty affiliated with the Medical
University of South Carolina. These programs emphasize one-on-one teaching, diverse clinical
experiences, and preparation for practice in a wide range of healthcare settings.
In addition, SRH has built a very innovative healthcare talent pipeline by partnering with local high
schools, Lander University, and Piedmont Technical College.
Initiatives such as the CARE Program, Dedicated Education Units, externships, and the Self Scholars program give nursing students valuable preceptor-led experiences and financial support while ensuring the hospital cultivates a strong workforce. SRH also invests in its team members through tuition reimbursement, RN-to-BSN advancement opportunities, and leadership development programs, fostering clear career pathways that allow employees to grow into advanced clinical and leadership roles.
The SRH health system has distinguished itself as a leader in clinical excellence, patient safety, and integrated care through prestigious accreditations, certifications, and national recognitions.
Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries
Restoring faith, family and future for vulnerable children and families
Since 1892, Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries has provided hope for South Carolina’s
children and families in need.
The ministry’s mission is to restore the faith, family and future of vulnerable children and
families through Christian services that emphasize ministry and healing.
The children who come to Connie Maxwell are in the midst of the most painful and confusing times of
their lives through no fault of their own. Out of that comes a lack of hope, trust and faith. Connie
Maxwell works to restore their faith in family, themselves and God and all that He can do to make their
hopes, dreams and aspirations for their future possible again.
Founded by Dr. J.C. and Sarah Maxwell after the tragic death of their seven-year-old daughter, Connie,
from scarlet fever, the ministry began as an orphanage on the couple’s 470-acre farm.
Inspired to honor their daughter, they donated the land to the South Carolina Baptist Convention, which
established the home to care for orphans.
The first child, 12-year-old Susie Burton, arrived on May 22, 1892, marking the start of a legacy that
has touched over 18,000 children and families. Early years focused on providing food, clothing and
Christian care, with cottages featuring gardens and milk cows to sustain the community.
Today, Connie Maxwell has evolved into a multifaceted ministry addressing the diverse needs of
vulnerable children and families across South Carolina. The ministry serves through Foster Care, Family
Care, Crisis Care and Residential Care, with four residential campuses across the state in Greenwood,
Chesterfield, Mauldin and Florence.
Looking ahead, Connie Maxwell is embracing a bold future outlined in its Decade of Dreams, a ten-year
strategic plan with three initiatives: the Healing Center, reimagining Maxwell Farms, and a new campus
in the Charleston area.
Supporting the ministry’s vision to become a national leader in Christian ministries of healing
for vulnerable children and families, a 40,000-square-foot healing and trauma center will be built on
the main campus in Greenwood. The facility will advance research, education, and implement cutting edge
interventions for children and families affected by trauma.
President Danny Nicholson called the Healing Center a “bridge between brokenness and being whole.
We’ve learned so much now about the heart, the brain and the spirit. We can put those things
together to be much more productive in our ability to make human beings whole and to nurture
them.”
The second initiative aims to transform Maxwell Farms, located on the Greenwood campus, into a
destination for ministry, concerts, recreation, animal therapy and leadership programs, all of which
will provide an income stream that supports ministry and healing for the children in our care. The
ministry has already begun hosting events at Maxwell Farms, including the corn maze in the fall and
concerts by renowned Christian artists.
The third initiative, a new campus in the Charleston area, will address growing needs in the only part
of the state where the ministry doesn’t have a presence.
These visionary goals are built upon the idea that every child needs to experience a deep and abiding
love that enables them to dream.
For 133 years, Connie Maxwell Children’s Ministries has continued to provide hope and healing for
children and families in Jesus’ name. To learn more, visit conniemaxwell.com.

Town of Ware Shoals
The Town of Ware Shoals, which straddles the counties of Greenwood, Abbeville and Laurens, was little
more than a picnic site on the Saluda River in the late 1800s. As America began developing hydroelectric
plants to produce electricity, the Saluda River and its shoals would become an attractive site for
industrialists of the day. Founded in 1902 by Benjamin D. Riegel, Ware Shoals became a bustling textile
community with Riegel Textile Corp. employing as many as 5,000 workers. In 1931 the federal New Deal
Program helped create Riegel Stadium. Through the decades the stadium has hosted many historic events
including both the textile and Negro baseball leagues. Today, Ware Shoals is best known for its annual
Catfish Festival. The event began in 1981 to harvest more than a ton of catfish from the shallows during
the annual draining of the Riegel Textile Company pool and dam site.

Town of Ninety Six
Ninety Six was established in 1730 as a trading post between settlers and local Indians. The name,
legend has it, was given for being 96 miles from the Keowee Indian village, with whom the settlers
traded with. By 1769 Ninety Six was home to the Ninety Six District Court, housing one of only two
British courthouses statewide, the other being in Charleston SC. The small village consisted of a jail,
a courthouse and eventually the home of Cambridge College. Ninety Six became the site of the first land
battle of the American Revolution south of New England and saw the first bloodshed in 1775. In 1781, a
second battle took place lasting 28 days, the longest siege of the American Revolution. It is now the
home of the National Park Service Ninety Six Star Fort Battle Site and houses the only American
Revolutionary Military tunnels in existence today. By the late 1800s the town moved closer to the
railroad and is located two miles from the still remaining British earthen star fort. Today that area is
part of the National Park Service. Ninety Six is rich in history, is present at the National Registry
Historic Train Depot and the stately older homes that grace Main Street. Residents from this uniquely
named town include Bill Voiselle, two-time World Series pitcher and the only National League Baseball
player to ever grace the number “96”; The Swinging Medallions; Rosel “Bobby”
Williams of baseball’s National Negro League; Dr. Benjamin Mays, educator, civil rights leader and
mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King; Notorious bad-boy U.S. Sen. Preston Brooks and several others. Ninety
Six is also home of the SC Festival of Stars. Enjoy a day at the lake, go horseback riding, visit the
quaint shops or play a round of golf. Ninety Six houses two golf courses, Star Fort Golf Course and The
Patriot, a stunning course designed by Pro Golfer Davis Love III. The population in Ninety Six as of
2018 was 2,018. Population since 2000 has increased 5.6%. www.townofninetysixsc.com
