Oil Lamp Theater
1723 Glenview Rd......... (847) 834-0738
Oil Lamp Theater is an award-winning 60-seat nonprofit theater located in the heart of downtown
Glenview. It produces six mainstage theatrical plays and offers special events throughout the year such
as its Speak Easy Nights for more than 10,000 patrons per year. Its mission is to provide a grand
theatrical experience in an intimate space by fostering connection, broadening horizons, and shining a
light on the human condition.
The lobby features warm décor and comfortable seating, reminiscent of a home, and its intimate space
and ambitious productions connect the audience and performers to create a truly unique experience. In
addition, the artwork on the lobby walls changes with each new show, providing a residency for local
artists to display their work.
In 2021, Oil Lamp opened its bar to the public, serving libations before, during, and sometimes after
each production. Craft cocktails are available for special events. They have also partnered with
Misericordia Sweets Shoppe, another local nonprofit organization, to continue the long-standing
tradition of offering fresh-baked complimentary cookies at each performance.
The name of the company comes from founder Keith Gerth’s childhood, where due to the rural nature
of his home town, they lost power often and used oil lamps to light the house. This brought the family
closer and created a beautiful, soft and intimate glow while they entertained each other with stories to
pass the time.
Originally, founded in February 2005, Oil Lamp Theater was dedicated to the preservation of traditional
theater in unique and original venues. With that vision in mind, Keith staged 20 productions for up to
35 friends and guests each night in his home, a condo in Lakeview.
