LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK: WHY WE ARE GRATEFUL

In my 11 months as President & CEO of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, I’ve had the privilege of
meeting so many of the people and businesses who make this city what it is — and I’ve found
myself continually moved by one simple truth: we are surrounded by greatness.
The kind of greatness
that shows up early, stays late, gives back, and never asks for credit. It lives in the small business
owner who puts everything on the line to grow a dream. In the teacher who believes in every student. In
the elected leader who opens doors for others and the volunteer who shows up with nothing but heart.
It’s because of people like this — and because we’re a Chamber that’s been
honored to walk alongside them for nearly 100 years — that we’re feeling deeply
grateful.
So this fall, we’ve decided to pause and reflect that gratitude out loud.
We’ll be recognizing individuals and businesses who embody the spirit of service, leadership, and
community through a series of special honors:

Glendale is Poppin’: VAI Resort is a Game Changer

If you’ve driven by the Loop 101 near State Farm Stadium lately, you’ve probably noticed
something massive taking shape. That’s not just construction — it’s transformation.
And its name is VAI Resort.
VAI is not just another development — it’s a statement. A $1.2 billion investment, VAI will
be the largest resort in Arizona, solidifying Glendale as a premier destination city. With over 1,100
luxury rooms, the world’s first Mattel Adventure Park, a 60-acre lagoon, and an 11,000-seat
amphitheater in partnership with Live Nation, this project is unlike anything Arizona has seen
before.
And let’s not forget the food — Michelin-starred chefs, celebrity dining experiences with
11 signature restaurants – including Bar Mar by José Andrés, the celebrity chef’s first
Arizona restaurant, and vibrant entertainment offerings that will draw visitors from all over the
world.
But this isn’t just about luxury and experience. The true power of VAI lies in its impact. The
resort is projected to generate more than 2,000 new jobs and deliver an estimated $2.2 billion in new
tax revenue. That’s money that goes back into our community — funding essential city
services, improving infrastructure, and creating opportunities for residents. It also means increased
foot traffic, local spending, and demand for goods and services — a direct boost to our small
businesses right here in Glendale.
Of course, like any big idea, VAI’s future depends on smart policy. This May, Glendale voters
will weigh in on Propositions 401 and 402, which directly affect the zoning and land use that allow this
project to move forward. These measures affirm decisions already unanimously approved by the Glendale
City Council. By voting Yes on Propositions 401 and 402, we can say Yes to new jobs, Yes to a
world-class destination, and Yes to a thriving future for Glendale.
Your Glendale Chamber of Commerce and a strong coalition of leaders across our community strongly
support Propositions 401 and 402. Glendale’s future is bright — and VAI Resort is a big

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
History in the Making: Centerline and Glendale’s Community Impact on Affordable Housing and Local Food Business Incubator Program

March 6, 2025 was the official grand opening day of 'Centerline on Glendale' in the City of Glendale,
Arizona at 67th & Glendale Avenues for Gorman & Company. This milestone marks a historic achievement, as
the Arizona Department of Housing (ADOH) introduced 'Centerline' as the first affordable housing
apartment community in Arizona built using State Housing Tax Credits.
ADOH invested $40 million in
Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, $20 million in State Housing Tax Credits, and $7.5 million in
other financing to construct this cutting-edge community, which includes 368 new apartment homes for
low-to-middle income Arizonans. This nine-building complex, housing hundreds of affordable rental units,
is a success for the Arizona State Tax Credit program in addressing the state's housing demands. Without
these credits from the states, most housing developments cannot go forward since federal tax credits
alone are not enough.
Centerline' has 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartment homes that all include modern
amenities such as full-size washers and dryers, private patios or balconies, wood-grain laminate
flooring, and ceiling fans in each room. Community amenities further enhance the lifestyle of the
residents, some of which are a clubhouse with a catering kitchen, exercise room, computer station,
splash pad, playground, dog park, BBQ patio, picnic tables, and covered parking.
Governor Katie
Hobbs joined the grand opening, highlighting the pivotal role played by the State Tax Credit program in
making affordable housing projects a reality. The Glendale Chamber of Commerce joined in the
celebration, acknowledging the synergy among primary stakeholders, including the City of Glendale, ADOH
Tax Credit Division, Maricopa County, AHCCCS, Arizona Industrial Development Authority, HOM Inc.,
Arizona Behavioral Health Corporation, US Bank, Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, and Local First Arizona.
Beyond Affordable Housing: A Launchpad for Food Entrepreneurs
Aside from the community
benefits, 'Centerline on Glendale' also provides a commercial kitchen where Local First Arizona operates
its Community Kitchen Incubator Program. The program can support up to 30 emerging food businesses at
once, providing an invaluable opportunity for culinary entrepreneurs to build their ventures in a
well-equipped, licensed kitchen.
Local First Arizona's Community Kitchens offer food business owners
professional-level space at a reasonable cost, including a massive walk-in fridge, dry food storage, and
a wash station. There is also free Wi-Fi and business equipment that is intended to help them take their
business to the next level. The program operates at multiple locations, including downtown Mesa,
Maryvale, Eastlake, and now Glendale.
Building a Stronger Local Food Economy
The Community Kitchen Incubator Program is structured to
support nascent businesses, allowing them a roadmap from launch to profitability. Startup entrepreneurs
begin with the Good Food Boot Camp, a six-week program under the direction of Chef Gabe, Director of
Food Programs at Local First Arizona. The program exposes participants to industry professionals,
government officials, and entrepreneurs to provide the necessary tools for success in the food
industry.
Applications for the Community Kitchen Incubator Program are open to food entrepreneurs

Public Policy - Driving the West Valley Forward: Key Priorities for Growth and Infrastructure

The West Valley Chamber of Commerce Alliance (WVCCA) meets before each Legislative Session to determine
their legislative priorities for the year. Those priorities guide the Alliance in selecting legislation
that supports business growth in the West Valley. In January, they hosted a forum for the West Valley
legislators, local elected officials and chamber members to discuss some of their business priorities.
Below are some of the top issues that the Alliance focused on during the 2025 Legislative
Session.
Workforce Growth
To keep Arizona competitive, the WVCCA champions a well-educated
and highly skilled labor force. It supports increased investment in all levels of education, from early
childhood through higher education, with a focus on Career and Technical Education Districts (CTEDs),
Joint Technical Education Districts (JTEDs), and adult training programs. The Alliance also advocates
for tax benefits for employers that offer childcare programs and that build a strong education system
from kindergarten through college that meets the demands of today’s workforce.
Water Supply
and Management
Water remains a critical issue for the West Valley’s growth. The WVCCA supports
policies that secure Arizona’s long-term water supply through investment in storage infrastructure
and the development of alternative sources such as treated wastewater and, in the future, desalination.
Additionally, the Alliance supports protecting the state’s Colorado River allotment and giving
Arizona communities a seat at the table in allocation decisions to ensure consistent and reliable water
access for future economic development.
Transportation Investment
Robust transportation
infrastructure is essential for job creation and business expansion. The WVCCA supports funding for
projects that improve Arizona’s interstate systems and highways. It opposes financial diversions
that undermine transportation progress and calls for sustainable, long-term funding solutions.
Transportation needs in the West Valley are critical and they worked closely with the Maricopa County
Association of Governments and the West Valley mayors to secure funding from the extension of the
half-cent sales tax that passed last November.
Energy Reliability and Affordability
The WVCCA
advocates for dependable, cost-effective energy solutions that support business operations across
sectors. Priorities include maintaining a strong electrical grid, protecting access to natural gas, and
the consideration in the future of small nuclear power facilities to reduce utility costs for businesses
and residents. They will allow for the anticipated continued business and residential growth occurring
in the West Valley and throughout the metropolitan areas.

2025 Annual Awards Dinner Nominees
Yvonne Knaack:
Yvonne Knaack has been a key member of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce since 1993. She was named
Chamber Volunteer of the Year in 2001 and served as chair of the board in 2005, helping implement the
Chairman's Circle. Elected to the Glendale City Council in 2006, she became the city’s first
female vice mayor and served for two years. Throughout her eight years on the council, she was a strong
supporter of the chamber and helped hire its last two CEOs. Yvonne has also served as chair of the
Chamber Public Policy Committee, chair of the Glendale Chamber PAC, and chair of the Glendale Downtown
Strategic Leadership Advisory Group from 2018 to 2022. She currently represents the Kiwanis Club of
Glendale and the Glendale Salvation Army and sits on the boards of four nonprofits.
Christine Steinberg:
For over 30 years, Chris Steinberg, founder of A Creative Solution, has helped businesses make a

Amy Ross:
Amy Ross is the proud Arizona franchise owner of Drybar, the premium blowout salon brand. With a deep
passion for the beauty industry, Amy has played a pivotal role in expanding Drybar's presence in
Arizona, growing the brand to seven locations across the Phoenix metropolitan area since 2011. A
seasoned beauty industry professional with over 20 years of experience, Amy’s career began at
Clinique Cosmetics, where she worked behind the counter. She later advanced to an executive role with
the Estee Lauder Companies before transitioning into entrepreneurship. Recognizing the untapped
potential in Arizona, Amy partnered with Drybar’s founders at the brand’s inception to bring
the innovative blowout bar concept to the Phoenix area, quickly establishing a successful salon chain in
the desert. Beyond her business achievements, Amy is a dedicated philanthropist, committed to giving

Brandi Paucek:
Brandi is a dedicated patriot with a deep passion for supporting veterans in her community. For over
seven years, she has been an active member of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, where she maximizes
their impact through the Military and Veterans Committee. With a strong commitment to service, Brandi
has volunteered countless hours to veterans’ causes, fostering meaningful connections and driving
initiatives that honor and uplift those who have served. Her unwavering dedication reflects a profound
respect for military sacrifice and a desire to give back. Brandi continues to champion the needs of
veterans, blending community leadership with heartfelt advocacy. She also works to build a strong civic
duty in her children by including them in volunteering when possible.
Todd R. Sandrin, Ph.D. :
Todd Sandrin serves as vice provost at ASU’s West Valley campus and Dean of the New College of
Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. Since his appointment in 2017, he has overseen significant
enrollment growth and student success. Todd has led collaborative efforts, including securing $5M in
funding from the National Science Foundation to support transfer student success in STEM. Previously, he
helped launch growing programs in Forensic Science, Cybersecurity, and Environmental Science, and
created the NCUIRE undergraduate research program. He also teaches microbiology, ASU 101, STEM success,
and introductory biology. Todd resides in Glendale with his wife, Susannah, and their children, Grace
(16) and Victor (19).
David Mitchell:
David Mitchell, the founder of Ideal Insurance Agency, has over 40 years of experience in the insurance
industry. He holds multiple professional designations, including CIC and CPCU, and is licensed in all
lines of insurance in Arizona. David co-founded Ideal Insurance in 1982, leading it to receive numerous
awards, including Best Insurance Agency in Glendale (2022-2024). In addition to his business
achievements, David is an experienced educator, teaching insurance courses at various colleges and
continuing education programs since 2002. He has served on several boards, including the Independent
Insurance Agents of Arizona, and has been recognized with multiple industry awards. David is deeply
involved in community service, including as Chair of the Arizona Justice Center and various chamber of
commerce roles. He is also a consultant and expert witness, having consulted on over 60 insurance cases.
David holds a bachelor's degree in management, two master's degrees, and several prestigious HR
designations.

Gary is the president and founder of a youth nonprofit organization, OCJ Kids (Opportunity, Community,
and Justice for Kids). OCJ Kids currently reaches out to over 10,000 foster children in the State of
Arizona through in home mentor visits, season outreach events, field trips, and nationwide community
partners. OCJ has been serving foster and at-risk children and youth in Arizona since 1996.
Gary Webb:
Gary currently serves as the committee chair for the Arizona Foster Care Network, connecting the faith
community with local foster group homes and DCS offices across Arizona. OCJ Kids is currently providing
resources, programming, training, and consulting in nine states.
Gary has spoken for conferences, youth camps, school assemblies and city wide youth outreaches locally
and overseas in the Philippines, Tanzania Africa, India, and New Zealand. We recently launched the
Restoring Dignity Project in Gisborne and Taupo, New Zealand.
Dr. Theresa Christensen:
Dr. Theresa Christensen is an experienced leader in early childhood education with over 26 years of
expertise. As the Founder and CEO of Bright Beginnings Preschool and Childcare, she champions
high-quality learning environments, empowering educators and building community partnerships. Holding a
PhD in Clinical Psychology, along with degrees in Human Services, Business Management, and Marriage &
Family Therapy, Theresa specializes in curriculum development, workforce readiness, and sustainable
childcare models. She is an advocate for improved policies and industry standards, serving on the
Northwest Maricopa Regional Council for First Things First and volunteering with the AzAEYC. Passionate
about making a difference, she is focused on expanding community-centered, sustainable childcare models
with a vision for employee ownership and lasting impact on early childhood education.
Maria Brunner:
Maria, Community Impact Manager at Credit Union West, brings over 30 years of financial industry
experience to drive strategic community partnerships and initiatives. She has been a board member of the
Glendale Chamber of Commerce since 2014, serving as its first Latina chair in 2018, and holds leadership
roles in several organizations, including the Prescott Valley Chamber's Hispanic Business Association,
Women’s Council of Realtors, and Global Women’s Leadership Network. Maria serves on multiple
boards, including the Pendergast Elementary School District Foundation and OCJ Kids. She has fostered
valuable partnerships in financial education with ACEE Investing in Girls, YWCA, and local school
districts. A finalist for the 2024 Credit Union Times Luminaries Awards and nominated for the Greater
Phoenix Chamber of Commerce ATHENA Award, Maria is a dedicated leader, championing diversity, business
growth, and community engagement.
One Step Beyond:
Since 2003, One Step Beyond's vision is a world in which people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities are fully included in all areas of our community and recognized for their potential,
talents, and contributions to society. Thus, we provide a unique variety of programs and services to
support the unique goals and dreams of over 700 individuals, at five campuses, and their families
throughout the greater Phoenix area. We offer a comprehensive support system from residential services,
life skills training, adaptive recreation programs, culinary training, employment support, speech
therapy, and home based community and in home services.
Benevilla:
Benevilla is a local nonprofit dedicated to enriching lives through compassionate support and community
services. Founded in 1981, Benevilla provides a wide range of programs, including adult day services,
caregiver support, and volunteer-driven assistance for older adults and individuals with disabilities.
The organization fosters a strong sense of community through intergenerational programs that connect
youth with seniors, promoting lifelong learning and engagement. Benevilla also offers caregiver
resources, wellness programs, and social services to ensure individuals can age with dignity and
independence. With a mission centered on enhancing quality of life, Benevilla relies on dedicated staff,
volunteers, and generous donors to continue providing essential services. Through collaboration with
local partners and innovative programming, Benevilla remains a trusted resource for individuals and
families in need of support throughout the West Valley.
Tarinda Craglow:
Tarinda Craglow joined Ombudsman Charter High Schools in 2018 as an outreach specialist, leveraging her
Bachelor’s in Psychology and Master’s in Social Work to address the social and emotional
needs of disengaged youth. With over 20 years of experience, she has served in various roles, including
school social worker and director of social work, and currently holds certification through ADE. Tarinda
developed the C.A.R.E.S. program, mentoring Social Work interns to enhance school social work presence,
improve student attendance, and boost graduation rates. As director of Enrollment and Outreach, she
oversees student enrollment growth across multiple Phoenix campuses and the state-wide Online Academy,
ensuring access to education for students across Arizona. Her dedication earned her the 2021 Arizona
School Social Worker of the Year award.
Laura Roman:
Laura Roman is a dedicated advocate for those who serve, including military members, first responders,
educators, and healthcare professionals. As an affiliate of Homes for Heroes, she helps provide
financial savings to these heroes in their journey to homeownership. Beyond real estate, Laura serves as
an honorary commander at Luke Air Force Base, fostering military connections, and as the Family Matters
Trustee for the Air Force Sergeants Association, supporting military families. She also contributes as a
board member for the Pendergast Foundation, strengthening community programs. With compassion and
integrity, Laura believes in building stronger communities through action. Her guiding principle:
"Serving, not selling."
Katrina Eaton:
Katrina has over 23 years of service with Vitalant, beginning in 2001 as our legacy blood center United
Blood Services. She started her career as the operator for the customer contact center, while a student
at Arizona State University, and then progressed to an account manager for the Scottsdale Territory.
Since 2008, Katrina has worked as senior account manager for the Glendale and Peoria Territory.
Partnering with the Glendale Chamber of Commerce has enhanced support from new and existing businesses,
schools, churches, and various organizations across the community. This partnership has grown over the
years to now host over 10 drives a year with Chamber businesses. The Glendale Chamber of Commerce began
the first Donate for Mothers Blood Drive in Arizona in 2024 and has created an annual blood drive
celebrating Mother’s Day and all mothers’ who have needed blood transfusions. The Chamber is
also helping patients served by Vitalant and helping create a diverse and stable blood supply for those
in need of this life-saving medicine.
Jeff Brunner:
Jeff grew up in Toledo Ohio and moved to Tucson Arizona to attend the University of Arizona. After
University of Arizona graduation, he moved up to Phoenix and was part owner in two S-Corporations
offering everything from online service to website development. Jeff gained extensive experience in many
“Contract” IT (Information Technology) positions and worked 35 years in IT at the Enterprise
level from insurance, education, banking, and government to high-end engineering. He attended several
Glendale Chamber of Commerce events per year starting in 2015 through his wife Maria Brunner. After
retiring in 2022, Jeff applied and was approved to be an Ambassador which he has served one and half
years to present. Jeff loves attending ribbon cuttings, ground breakings, and Business after Hours,
Business Over Breakfast and most of all, greeting members at the door.
Andrea Schauer:
Andrea believes that understanding technology empowers individuals to take control of their futures and
that education and perseverance can transform lives. Born and raised in Arizona, she attended local
public schools before earning a degree from Arizona State University. As a professor and program
director at Glendale Community College, she brings industry experience and is dedicated to making IT
education fun and accessible.
Raised by hard working parents who prioritized financial literacy and higher education, Andrea strives
to make complex concepts understandable and equip students with the knowledge and confidence to thrive
in the tech industry. Passionate about mentorship and workforce development, she is committed to
breaking down barriers in tech and guiding students toward success, helping them gain the skills needed
for high-paying, future-proof careers.
Stanton Optical:
Stanton Optical in Glendale, owned by Shiggy Yamada, has quickly established itself as a leader in eyecare since opening in December 2022. Their outstanding service has earned recognition, including a 2023 PHX Magazine "Best of the Valley" finalist, a 2024 Nextdoor Neighborhood Fave, and a 2025 Trusted Partner award from the Academies of Math & Science. Beyond accolades, Stanton Optical is dedicated to community engagement, participating in initiatives like the Toys-For-Tots Holiday Campaign, partnering with CharityVision to treat sight impairments in developing nations, and supporting local health and safety events. With same-day glasses and walk-in appointments, their innovative approach blends convenience with compassionate service, creating an experience that stands out in the Valley.
The Arizona Ridge Riders and the Glendale Business Community: A Winning Partnership

Arizona Ridge Riders general manager Casey Lane cannot say enough about the overwhelming support the
team has received from the community since its debut in the newly formed Professional Bull Riders (PBR)
Team Series three years ago.
Glendale businesses, including those in the Westgate Entertainment
District where the Ridge Riders’ home arena, Desert Diamond Arena, is located, are just as
appreciative of how the team and its fans have supported them.
The PBR has grown into a global
organization with its broadcasts reaching “more than 405 million households in more than 91
territories,” but its roots go back to April 1992 in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was there in a motel
room where a “group of 20 visionary bull riders” each invested $1,000 to start the
organization.
The Arizona market embraced the PBR during its Unleash The Beast Series events that
started in Glendale in 2016. Six years later when the PBR formed PBR Teams, “which transformed
bull riding from an individual to team-formatted competition,” the Arizona Ridge Riders –
who were founded and are owned by Teton Ridge, a “premier Western sports media, lifestyle and
entertainment company” – were part of the original eight teams. There are now 10 teams with
the New York Mavericks and Oklahoma Wildcatters joining the 5-on-5 bull riding league prior to the 2024
season.
“The entire West Valley and especially the city of Glendale have been fantastic and
have embraced the Ridge Riders as their team,” Lane said. “And the folks at Desert Diamond
Arena have been perfect to deal with.”
From Oct. 10-12, the Desert Diamond Arena will host
the fourth annual PBR Ridge Rider Days as “the Ridge Riders will take over Westgate again,”
Lane said. This year’s event is still in the planning stages, but if it is anything like last
year, Ridge Rider Days will once again be a hit for all ages.
Last year’s event was a huge
success inside and outside Desert Diamond Arena as Coach Colby Yates’ team won all three of its
games and Westgate Entertainment District hosted the hugely-popular Ridge Rider Days Fan Zone at Water
Dance Plaza. There, fans enjoyed free live entertainment, built their own custom hats, met and received
autographs from members of the Ridge Riders, bought team merchandise, and plenty more.

Plaza also hosted two afterparties last year as fans enjoyed drinks, food, and live performances by DJ
duo, VAVO, and country music artist Andy Velo. Lane said this year’s Ridge Rider Days afterparties
will likely include performances by a DJ and a country band.
There was also a pickleball tournament
last year at Chicken N Pickle restaurant in the Westgate Entertainment District as Nick Tetz, Keyshawn
Whitehorse, and other Ridge Riders participated in the event.
“Each Ridge Rider Days just
keeps building momentum, and we want to continue that,” Lane said.
Salt Tacos y Tequila and
other Westgate Entertainment District businesses are also counting down the days until the Ridge Riders
ride back into Glendale.
“With our proximity to Desert Diamond Arena and State Farm Stadium,
we must prepare our staff for ‘event days,” said Kat Goldwood, marketing director for Salt
Entertainment Group, a hospitality collective of restaurants, night clubs and experiences that includes
Salt Tacos y Tequila. “Ridge Rider Days fall under this umbrella because we see increased foot
traffic into the restaurant. We have had great success on these Ridge Rider Days and typically see a
15-20% increase across both food and alcohol sales–especially beer!”
Ridge Riders fans
will have another opportunity before Ridge Rider Days to interact with Coach Yates and their favorite
bull riders during the team’s kickoff party June 28 at the Buckeye Equestrian & Events Center.
There will be two events as part of this training camp, Lane said, including a private meet the team
dinner for corporate sponsors, potential sponsors, and the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, and a fan fest
with a bull riding event, autograph opportunities, and the chance to ride a mechanical bull.
“The fan fest is an opportunity for 2-3,000 of our biggest fans to celebrate the beginning of the
season,” Lane said. “We’re all looking forward to it.”

A.R.I.S.E. Community Solutions: Overcoming Challenges to Serve the Community

With 25 years in the human service field, Lydia Sanabria, CEO of A.R.I.S.E. Community Solutions, has
always been deeply committed to supporting her community. She now has devoted her attention to veterans
and individuals struggling with mental health and substance use.
However, by September of last
year, she found herself questioning whether she could continue. Despite facing significant challenges in
insurance regulations, evolving payment structures, and care assessment requirements, Sanabria remains
steadfast, driven by her unwavering faith, a strong belief in A.R.I.S.E.’s mission, and the
dedication of her exceptional team of therapists and psychiatrist. The support from the Glendale Chamber
of Commerce has also been instrumental in helping the organization navigate these changes by remaining
connected to other professionals.
Founded in August 2021 and officially designated as a nonprofit,
the doors opened in March 2022. A.R.I.S.E. Community Solutions was initially funded through the personal
savings and 401(k) contributions of Sanabria’s husband and son. The organization initially focused
on supporting veterans struggling with substance abuse — a cause that resonates deeply with
Sanabria, as her own son, a Marine Corps veteran, has faced similar challenges following an injury
sustained during his service.
At its inception, A.R.I.S.E. operated a five-day-per-week Intensive
Outpatient Program (IOP). However, in mid-2023, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS)
implemented changes to the fee-for-service following the discovery of fraudulent billing practices at
various behavioral health outpatient centers. As a result, A.R.I.S.E. could no longer sustain its
original operational model which aimed to decrease homelessness while receiving care, and by the end of
2024, the organization had to discontinue providing IOP for drug and alcohol and stop their stipend
program for those attending.
In response to these challenges, A.R.I.S.E. has adapted by expanding
its services to other groups in need such as mothers with postpartum depression, grief, and PTSD.
According to its Psychology Today profile, A.R.I.S.E. provides a range of evidence-based therapeutic
approaches, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), eye movement desensitization
and reprocessing (EMDR), hypnotherapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), play therapy, and sand tray
therapy. The organization extends its services to children starting at age 5, including counseling for
individuals, support for families, couples, veterans, and first responders.
Sanabria leads a
multidisciplinary team of professionals, including psychiatrists, licensed counselors, social workers, a
psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, a veteran peer support specialist, and a case manager
— all committed to improving the well-being of their clients.
“Everyone on this team
believes in the mission of A.R.I.S.E., and that is to help our community and their mental health,”
Sanabria said. “A.R.I.S.E. has a phenomenal clinical team – they truly care for the people
and they want to do good work. That’s what has kept the doors open.”
In February, the
entire A.R.I.S.E. team came together to support the organization’s move to a new 1,800-square-foot
office at 4323 W. Cactus Road in Glendale. With no external grant funding, the relocation was a
significant undertaking, made possible through the dedication of staff and their families, who
volunteered more than 10 hours of their time to assist with moving, painting, and cleaning.
Sanabria
also acknowledges the invaluable support A.R.I.S.E. has received from the Glendale Chamber of Commerce,
particularly in networking and business development opportunities. Events like Business Over Breakfast
have helped foster meaningful connections within the community.
“The Glendale Chamber’s
new CEO, Joshua Gunn, has made it a priority to engage with members, and we were grateful for the
opportunity to share our mission with him,” Sanabria said. “In January, we were also invited
to present to the chamber’s board, which was an incredible opportunity for us.”
Reflecting on the partnership with the chamber, Sanabria expressed gratitude: “We are fortunate to
be part of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce. Their support keeps us connected and engaged with the
community, and that has been invaluable to our growth.”

Unbridled Calm: Horses and people find respite at Wild Hooves Open Hearts

In January, the Glendale Chamber of Commerce team welcomed the new year with a retreat to Wild Hooves
Open Hearts (WHOH), an inspiring Glendale-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving and providing
sanctuary for wild mustangs. What began as a brief pause from the daily grind transformed into a
profound journey of renewal, intention, and connection. Guided by WHOH founder Siarra Decomi, the team
engaged in reflection, meditation, and field exercises, deepening their bonds with one another while
drawing inspiration from the sanctuary’s two rescued mustangs, Sampson and Q, who roam freely
across a serene one-acre pasture.
“They were all wound up before the retreat, and they were
going to do their Quarter 1 planning session after being with the horses, but because they were so
relaxed, they didn’t want to do anything after being with the horses,” says Siarra Decomi,
horse rescuer and Wild Hooves Open Hearts founder and president. “So that was a win, because what
we strive to do with these programs is help people get out of their busy minds, especially corporate
people.”
That’s certainly what happened with the Chamber team, says Joshua Gunn,
president and CEO of the Glendale Chamber.
“The retreat at Wild Hooves Open Hearts was exactly
what our team needed – a chance to step away from the demands of our fast-paced work and reconnect
with ourselves and each other in a meaningful way,” he says. “The experience with the horses
reminded us of the power of presence, trust, and non-verbal communication, all of which are essential to
strong teamwork and leadership.”
Decomi, whose main business is commercial lending and
finance, created her nonprofit, a sanctuary for wild horses, in 2023. Since then, large and small groups
have reaped the benefits of being around animals that can have a calming influence. Decomi has had yoga
classes in the pasture, as well as sound bath healing and team-building events.
The retreat was
“truly transformative,” says Aubrie Herman, director of operations at the Chamber. “It
served as a great reminder to slow down and tune into the non-verbal cues from our teammates.”
That’s music to the ears of Decomi, whose dream is to someday build a full retreat center.
“I would love for people to be able to come out and stay over for a two-day retreat,” she
says. “I’m working right now as hard as I possibly can to get the money it would take to put
all of that together.”

Glendale Community College turns 60
Sixty years ago, the land where Glendale Community College (GCC) currently stands “functioned as
a working ranch.” Today, the GCC Main Campus at 59th Avenue and Olive Avenue, and the
school’s North Campus at 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road, are home to a thriving college
community located in one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States.
Situated
approximately 15 miles northwest of Downtown Phoenix – now the nation’s fifth-largest city
with more than 1.6 million residents – GCC has gone from being “out in the middle of nowhere
to now being in the center of an exciting and energetic economic engine in the West Valley,” said
John Heckenlaible, Glendale Community College Director of Marketing/Public Information Officer.
“When I first moved here in 1983, you would drive for 20 minutes and you would be out in the
desert – that’s no longer the case as you can now drive for an hour, and you would still be
in an urban setting,” Heckenlaible said. “That change has shown that the Phoenix Metro area
is a dynamic and growing area. With a population of 5-6 million people, it’s one of the six
largest metro areas in the country. It’s been fun to watch the growth and be part of a growing
community.”
Since GCC’s first classes started in the fall of 1965 with 1,974 students
enrolled in liberal arts classes, the college’s enrollment has grown to approximately 14,000 per
semester. Over the last six decades, more than half a million students have taken classes at the GCC
Main Campus and North Campus, which opened 25 years ago near the Thunderbird Mountains.
GCC now
offers more than 100 certificate and degree programs for students straight out of high school as well as
transfer students, career changers, and adult learners who might just want to take classes for fun.
“We have a very strong CTE (Career and Technical Education) program with a lot of classes in
engineering, fire science, cybersecurity, and the digital fine arts,” Heckenlaible said.
“We also have an outstanding auto technology program, and our nursing program is top notch. When I
talk to recruiters from area hospitals, they tell me that when they see a resume with Glendale Community
College on it, they (know) they’re getting a qualified individual.”
GCC students benefit
from faculty and staff who are subject matter experts and possess “advanced degrees along with
real-world experience.” Internship opportunities, whether paid, unpaid, or completed for academic
credit, also play an important role in GCC students’ education. An example of how GCC provides
experiential learning opportunities for students is the Gaucho Security Operations Center (GSOC), which
opened two years ago and is the first operations center in Arizona “to use (a) collaborative-hub
model that gives back to the community by offering cyber as a service. Rural municipalities that need
cybersecurity services can partner with GSOC and receive monitoring, detecting, and informing services
from student interns, all at no cost.”
Last October, GCC won an Excellence in Innovation Award
for its GSOC program from WESTMARC (Western Maricopa Coalition) during its 32nd Annual Best of the West
Awards Dinner. “WESTMARC’s major goal is to be a proponent of growth in the West
Valley,” Heckenlaible said. “We’re really proud we have a really strong relationship
with them, as well as the Glendale Chamber of Commerce.”
Developing these types of
partnerships has helped GCC better understand the needs of the community and develop a curriculum that
will help GCC students be prepared to work in a West Valley that has undergone plenty of change over the
last several decades.
To celebrate the growth of GCC and all the student and faculty successes
during the last six decades, the college has planned a number of special events throughout the rest of
2025. A large celebratory event was held on April 1, with guest speakers, entertainment, the Gaucho
Mascot and food. Future events include an Ice Cream Social on August 13 in the Student Union (room 104),
Spirit Week in September, and a Music Showcase in the Performing Arts Center on Oct. 10.

Did You Know?
• The palm trees that line the sidewalk in GCC’s main mall area are original to the ranch
that used to be where the college now stands. “When they started building the college, instead of
getting rid of those palm trees, they decided to replant them in the main mall area,” Heckenlaible
said.
• In 1965, classes at GCC took place “in temporary facilities at the Camelback and Maryland
extensions of Phoenix College.” It wasn’t until September 1966 when classes started taking
place at 59th Avenue and Olive Avenue.
• GCC was officially named “Glendale Community College” on April 12, 1965. The site
where the campus was built was previously called the “Northwest Campus.”
• The GCC’s first student council “unanimously chose the Gaucho as the proud mascot
for GCC.”
• Alice Cooper, a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, attended Glendale Community College in
the 1960s while still known by his birth name, Vincent David Furnier.
• GCC also offers a four-year curriculum that leads to a Bachelor of Arts in Early Elementary and Special Education.
