Family-owned Business Cleans Up

M&M Cleaning Solutions is a second generation commercial cleaning company run by Daniel Morillo and his wife, Maria.

M&M specializes in building maintenance, janitorial services, post construction cleaning and resort and hotel cleaning. His parents, Wanda and Ramon, met in New York and moved to Florida in 1990, where they started the business.

Wanda was born and raised in the south Bronx, while Ramon came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic.

“Both my parents’ last names started with an ‘M’ and that’s how the company name came about,” Daniel Morillo says. “My father worked in construction in New York, but decided to change careers and open a cleaning business after the Florida move,” Morillo says. “He knew how to knock on doors, even with his little English.”

Once the couple moved down to Florida, Wanda worked for the Broward County school board while Daniel’s dad did the cleaning.

“In late 2000, my parents started servicing resorts,” Morillo says. “Resorts pay for us to be their third party cleaner.” This segment is now a majority of its business.

Morillo has been a part of M&M since he was young. “I was taking out trash from the time I was six years old,” Morillo says. “My father bought vacuums from swap meets and fixed them in the backyard.”

After graduating from the University of South Florida in Tampa in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in finance, Morillo began working for the company full time.

“It was just my parents running the show,” he says. “I took over in 2019, with my parents taking on lesser roles as advisers.”

Maria handles the company’s social media, online presence and marketing.

Daniel joined the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber in July 2024 as a trustee member and became involved in its programs immediately. His goal was to be in the same room as many of the decision makers of large companies and be given the opportunity to present his company.

“We’ve been a part of the Greater West Broward Leads Group and the West Council,” Morillo says. “I’m hoping to get even more involved next year.”

One of the benefits that he has seen of his chamber membership has been brand recognition.

“A typical executive doesn’t know many reliable cleaning companies; they may call friends for referrals,” he explains. “Much of our new business is through referrals and word of mouth. The chamber introduces us to potential customers.”

In 2026, Daniel is looking to partner with general contractors and hotel executives to expand the business.

“We’ve been going back to where we started, focusing on janitorial building and maintenance as well as construction cleaning,” he says. “We will stay true to our core value, which is helping one another. We consider staff and clients as family, and we treat them as such.”

Forging Her Own Path:

Michelle Caba,

This past August, the City of Deerfield Beach installed its first dedicated director of economic development, Michelle Caba.

“The city and business community are excited, as there has never been anyone in a role dedicated to economic development,” Caba says.

She comes to the role after 20 years on Wall Street, with 10 of those running a trading floor for corporate and municipal bonds.

“I became familiar on how these are passed through local government,” she says.

Yet, her roots are in entrepreneurship. Caba grew up in her family’s Manhattan clothing store, which her father owned for two decades. She took over the business after her father passed in 2016, leaving her Wall Street career behind.

Caba leaned into her entrepreneurial career, buying businesses that were facing hard times. One purchase was a Hoboken, NJ, nail salon owned by a reality show star. She also has invested in real estate, mainly Orlando condominiums, since 2010.

She is proud to have passed on this entrepreneurial trait to her son Cash, 17.

“Cash will soon be a college student,” she says. “He’s been a part of all my businesses and will study finance and entrepreneurship.”

Caba took her experience with her when she moved to South Florida after selling her businesses in January of 2020.

“When I moved down here, I received my first government contract with the SBDC (Small Business Development Center) at Florida International University,” she says.

Caba started consulting with small businesses, primarily in Miami. During that period, she created a digital program to help female company founders called Style Your Business, and published a best-selling book on Amazon with the same name.

“It is about marketing, entrepreneurship and small business building,” she explains.

Caba also runs a golf community called PWRHAUS Golf Society, which leverages golf so high achieving women can make connections and close deals on the course.

She says her past experience gave her all the pieces she needed to head economic development in the City of Deerfield Beach.

“The reason this all came about is I realized my love to help businesses scale,” Caba explains. “I understood how the government can help or hinder businesses from growing. This came about as an opportunity to take a city that hasn’t done much for capital investment or the business community and bring in my lens of business strategies to turn the city around.”

She has a number of goals and initiatives in the years ahead. These include:

•  Building a robust business programming platform for the city

•  Revitalizing District 2, which is an underserved and overlooked community

•  Connecting the dots and understanding South Florida and its business leaders

•  Building a workforce to encourage residents from preteens on up to work and invest in the city

Caba looks forward to continuing her partnership with the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber in reaching these goals.

“We have always been a Chamber partner, and we are here to support them in any way we can,” she says.

BLU by ThriveWell™ Offers Cutting-Edge Longevity Care

Dr. Gordon Chen, cardiologist, co-founder and CEO of BLU by ThriveWell™, and his wife, Dr. Jessica Chen, co-founder and Chief Wellness Officer, founded BLU by ThriveWell™ about two years ago as a passion project. The two physicians previously served as executives at ChenMed, a Florida-based healthcare organization focused on senior wellness.

“We took care of seniors from all across the country using an outcomes-based care model so they could live five to seven years longer,” Dr. Gordon Chen says.

The couple decided to delegate their former leadership roles at ChenMed and spent time reflecting on their next chapter. While ChenMed was geared toward seniors, the Chens realized that a similar preventative, proactive approach could help individuals in their 30s, 40s, and 50s extend their healthy lifespan.

“We looked at the data and saw that one to two decades of healthy life are on the table for any individual,” Dr. Gordon Chen explains. “It’s a tremendous opportunity to take someone who might otherwise live an average life expectancy and help them live one to two decades longer; for women, it’s more than 14 years longer.”

BLU (an acronym for Bringing Longevity to You) isn’t based on rocket science or a magic pill—it’s rooted in intentional behavior change and a focus on the five drivers of health and wellness: personal, community, physical, nutritional, and spiritual.

“We learned about these five drivers of health and wellness by going into 130 communities and taking care of 200,000 seniors across 14 states,” Dr. Gordon Chen says.

The couple also studied longevity communities around the world, visiting rural areas to better understand what truly impacts long-term health. They discovered that these five drivers account for roughly 80% of the answer.

“For personal, we think about purpose, priorities, and plan; community is engaging, encouraging, and empowering; physical is sleep, steps, and strength; nutritional is mostly plant-based, real whole food and stopping eating before you’re full; and spiritual is meditation, mindfulness, and motivation. We realized that optimizing these five drivers needed to be the foundation for any service we offered to help people live longer, healthier, and with purpose,” Dr. Chen adds.

On October 8, BLU by ThriveWell™ celebrated its ribbon cutting in conjunction with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce for its new 20,000-square-foot facility. In addition to its personalized longevity programs, the first-of-its-kind center features indoor pickleball courts, yoga and Pilates studios, cold plunge and infrared saunas, hyperbaric chambers, and luxurious suites for out-of-town guests. Approximately 25% of BLU’s 100-plus members are from outside the state.

BLU by ThriveWell™ operates on a membership model with annual offerings. Memberships start at $279 per month, while medical memberships—including advanced medical testing and monthly follow-ups with wellness coaches begin at $6,000 annually.

BLU by ThriveWell™, a proud Trustee Plus member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, looks forward to continuing to build and strengthen its longevity community in Fort Lauderdale.

Chairman’s Circle Spotlight: Holland & Knight

Becoming a member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce’s exclusive Chairman’s Circle is an example of that commitment.

The Chairman’s Circle is at the pinnacle of the chamber’s Corporate Partners, as this “exclusive group is composed of high-impact business leaders, visionary entrepreneurs, and influential decision-makers who are deeply committed to shaping the region’s economic future.” Membership in this exclusive group allows Holland & Knight to increase its visibility while building relationships with fellow Broward County business and civic leaders who share similar values.

“Our investment as a Chairman’s Circle member reflects our continuing support of the Chamber’s vision to inspire prosperity within our business community,” said Janna Lhota, a partner in Holland & Knight’s Fort Lauderdale office and Chair-Elect of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber. “As one of the Chamber’s longest continuous members, we recognize the vital role it plays in not only connecting businesses, but also in advocating for initiatives that strengthen our entire community.”

By partnering with the Chamber, Holland & Knight continues its long-standing tradition of civic engagement and public service. Each year, the firm contributes an amount of time equal to at least 3 percent of its billable hours to pro bono legal services. Holland & Knight also supports Broward Legal Aid, Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida, the United Way of Broward County, including its MISSION UNITED program, and Children’s Harbor. “Holland & Knight attorneys are encouraged to share their talents and resources to improve the quality of life in communities where we work and live,” Lhota said.

Lhota will continue Holland & Knight’s long tradition of public service and civic engagement in 2026 when she will become Chair of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, following in the footsteps of the firm’s retired partner Stephen Moss, who chaired the Chamber in 1994.

Lhota is also focused on supporting the Chamber’s efforts to expand affordable and workforce housing, which she said is “critically needed to attract businesses and talent to our community.”

Celebrating Excellence in Healthcare

The Ft. Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce’s 2025 Excellence in Healthcare Awards event was held November 5 at the Le Méridien Dania Beach. It was hosted by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Council in partnership with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Baptist Health South Florida.

The annual event celebrates South Florida’s most dedicated healthcare professionals, organizations and programs for their outstanding contributions to improving community health. The awards recognize superior healthcare executives, practitioners, organizations and other innovative industry leaders who contribute to serve and achieve despite ongoing challenges.

Timothy G. Curtin, vice president of community services at Memorial Healthcare System, serves as the Healthcare Committee Chair, while Kate Goldman, director, government & community relations-Broward County for Baptist Health South Florida is vice chair.

“We moved to a new venue this year, which was fabulous,” Curtin says. “And we honored six esteemed Excellence in Healthcare Award honorees as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.”

Those honored included:

Honorees are chosen by the 14 members of the Healthcare Committee.

“We put out applications and have a rating committee,” Curtin says. “It was very difficult choosing winners this year, more so than in years past.”

Lifetime Achievement awards are not given annually, as this recognizes esteemed healthcare professionals who are retiring.

“All the folks recognized are in a class by themselves,” Curtin says.

The Excellence in Healthcare Awards kicked off with a CEO panel that included Stephen L. Demers, CEO, Memorial Healthcare System Pembroke; William Ulbright, CEO, Baptist Health South Florida; and Yair A. Katz, president, Nicklaus Children’s Health System – Broward Market.

“It was a wonderful panel that discussed what’s going on in healthcare in South Florida and Broward County,” Curtin says.

Mary Mayhew of the Florida Hospital Association served as keynote speaker at the event.

“We had a full house, and Mary came down from Tallahassee to talk about trends, the future of healthcare and what’s happening in the healthcare field,” Curtin says. “It was the perfect audience for her presentation.”
