Peak Power Suit delivers
full workout in less time

Chris Caputo, city commissioner for Wilton Manors and owner of Development Partners, has recently branched off into a different direction.

In September, Caputo opened Peak Fitness in Wilton Manors, a gym that works with personal trainers and uses innovative technology in its workout suits. The suit, similar to a wetsuit, uses unique electrical muscle stimulation which produces 150 times the muscle contractions of a traditional gym workout.

“We developed our own version,” Caputo said. “I made my own suits.”

The Peak Power Suit is designed with stimulation pads controlled by a trainer during the workout. The FDA-approved suit is lightweight, allows full movement and is more breathable than previous workout suits.

The workouts, which focus on low-impact sessions that don’t use heavy weights, can deliver the equivalent results of 90-minutes of exercise in just 20 minutes. Members typically workout 2-3 sessions each week.

“It’s less than an hour per week,” Caputo said.

Each session is capped at six participants for a more individualized, focused personal training experience.

Caputo said Peak Fitness targets people in their 40s and 50s who have not been physically active in recent years. They provide an environment in which members feel comfortable and they often see results quickly.

“The results are crazy,” he said.

Since opening, the success has exceeded expectations, Caputo said. They have picked up new members while retaining current members.

But it didn’t happen overnight.

“The plan has been three years in the making,” Caputo said.

Leading up to the opening, he had to create the suit. He first had to learn the technology and then source a manufacturer to develop and produce it.

Caputo said he built Peak Fitness as a franchise model and hopes to franchise in the future. He is also working on finding a second location in the area.

He is also focused on representing the residents of Wilton Manors as an elected city commissioner.

Elected in 2020 to his first term, Caputo said the position is a great opportunity to bridge the gap with small businesses and help small business owners to succeed.

Caputo said his biggest accomplishment was his hand in enacting “sweeping changes to our development code.”

“The previous code was not good for developers,” he said.

Every plot of available land has been sold, Caputo said, and strong growth attracts new businesses.

The revised city development code will make it economically viable for developers while protecting residents, he said.

Wester expands Memorial Healthcare to serve entire community

Looking back at his first year as president and CEO at Memorial Healthcare System, K. Scott Wester, FACHE, said building relationships, taking care of our caregivers, forming collaborations, and expanding access and services are the wins.

“South Florida is fast paced, so I hit the ground running, first getting to know Memorial’s leadership and Board of Commissioners, and then walking the halls, breaking bread — aka sharing pastelitos and gumbo — with many of our team members, taking part in community and business events and getting to know as many people as possible,” Wester said.

Over the past year, Memorial has built partnerships with Broward Health to drive health forward throughout Broward County, joined forces with Solis Mammography to expand access to high-quality, patient-focused breast screening and diagnostic services and has teamed up with Luna, a tech-enabled, in-home care provider, to expand access to outpatient physical therapy services, Wester said.

Additionally, to continue to meet the healthcare needs of children and families, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital recently doubled in size, adding four floors, including an inpatient rehabilitation gym, family and staff support areas, and the 14th Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Child Life Zone, among other offerings.

“And just recently we learned that Memorial has been selected by Modern Healthcare as one of its 2023 Best Places to Work. We have the best team,” Wester said.

To that point, Wester added, “It goes back to culture, culture, culture. I really enjoy the level of care Memorial provides and how deeply rooted we are in the community.

“The experience has exceeded all of my expectations — from the strength of our Memorial team of more than 15,000 individuals who work together to drive health forward in Broward County, to what Memorial means in to the community from a clinical standpoint, how it is a pillar not only in the healthcare arena but in the business community and how many different stakeholders see the value of having Memorial in the market.”

Wester started at Memorial last July, coming to Florida from Baton Rouge, La., where he served as Executive Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Advocacy for Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System.

“We went from Cajun food to Cuban food — it’s a little bit different. Of course, the diversity in the population is much more robust in South Florida than it is in South Louisiana,” Wester said.

Transitioning to a market that has 5 or 6 million people in South Florida meant having to understand traffic patterns a little bit better, he said.

“Yet, the day-to-day aspect of what I do has not fundamentally changed,” Wester said. “How you lead a health system in South Florida is not very different from how you lead a health system in Louisiana. It’s about having a great culture, providing the right level of clinical care and doing it with the right attitude — healing the mind, body and spirit of those you touch. It’s been a great transition.”

With Wester at the helm, in April, Memorial purchased two parcels of land at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and State Road 7. Plans for developing the 8-acre site in the heart of Hollywood are beginning to take shape.

“Recognizing it being an iconic site, previously part of the footprint of the Hollywood Fashion Center, we are convening a work group including internal and external stakeholders to determine the optimal use for the property,” Wester said.

At this point, Wester said, Memorial is optimistic this project will be a multi-use development including various private and public partners to ensure its ability to accelerate the level of health and well-being of the community.

With the healthcare industry continuing to face many economic challenges — a lot of them driven by inflationary factors directly related to supply and labor costs — Wester said it is important to continue to explore more efficient ways to deliver care, ensuring that care is delivered at the right place at the right time in the right location.

“Workforce is also a big challenge, especially in technical programs. Lots of the headlines focus on the nursing shortage, which is extremely important, but we also have challenges in technical programs, including medical technologists, respiratory technologists, surgical technologists, radiology technologists and more.”

So Memorial and others in the healthcare field must partner with high schools to educate young people of the alternative types of careers they offer that enable those who want to provide a sense of well-being to others.

“There are many options in two-year technical degrees that aren’t being communicated and explored,” Wester said.

Looking ahead, Wester said Memorial will continue to position itself as a health and well-being provider, not just as an institution to turn to when someone needs an acute illness to be treated.

Toward that goal, in May Memorial unveiled a population health initiative called “One City at a Time” that will station Memorial Primary Care Mobile Health Centers, or mobile units, within cities in south Broward to offer services to uninsured and underinsured children and adults.

“And before the year ends, we expect to remove even more barriers to care by opening various new Memorial Primary Care locations throughout south Broward and north Miami-Dade,” Wester said.

Additionally, the new freestanding Memorial Cancer Institute is slated to open its doors before the end of the year in Pembroke Pines.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer advanced treatment options and cancer research and services to our community,” Wester said.

HOERBIGER Corp. of America in Pompano Beach celebrates 60 years in the U.S.

HOERBIGER Corp. of America (HCA) incorporated in New York in 1963 and moved to Pompano Beach in the 1970s after acquiring local steel valve plate and valve ring stamping company Hubco.

HCA now has more than 300 employees in Pompano Beach, and it provides customer support across Latin America through its sister company located in Deerfield Beach.

HCA is one of six global manufacturing facilities for the compression technology business unit of HOERBIGER Corp., based in Vienna, Austria. HOERBIGER produces reciprocating compressor components for gas compression equipment for the petrochemical, natural gas, hydrogen, air separation, oxygen service and industrial air markets.

The company is named after Hanns Hoerbiger, who invented a steel plate valve and sought a patent for it in 1895 in Vienna, according to the company’s website. Hoerbiger’s invention yielded a significant performance improvement in steelmaking compressors and paved the way for the invention of modern high-pressure chemistry.

“Our success is due to a combination of next-generation technology — including robotic, automated production equipment — unique industry expertise and our local Pompano Beach team of more than 300 dedicated professionals,” said Arek Dyrdol, HCA president and head of the company’s North American OEM region.

As it did for most industries, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and created “a tough situation for both our employees and our manufacturing processes,” Dyrdol said. In response, HCA started operating in a hybrid mode, which enabled it to continue production with no interruption.

“This is a testament to our team, who responded to these challenges and enabled us to continue serving our customers throughout this time without any interruptions,” he said.

HCA has resolved most of its pandemic-caused supply chain problems and continues to manage potential supply chain risks, Dyrdol said. Because HOERBIGER is a global company, HCA can get support from the company’s other regions when necessary.

Nearly all HCA’s business is in North America and South America. From a global viewpoint, HOERBIGER’s supply chain problems elsewhere in the world have less effect on HCA. Europe’s current geopolitical situation, though, including the war between Russia and Ukraine and situations in other European countries, has created some unforeseen challenges.

Aside from the pandemic’s effects on industries worldwide, global competition in the energy sector is “very strong,” Dyrdol said.

“Our strong market position in the conventional energy sector, our entrepreneurial approach and our culture of technological innovation puts us ahead of our competitors,” he said. “At the same time, as we move toward greener and more sustainable energy, we see more and more players entering this space. At HOERBIGER, we are always looking towards the future, and green energy, as well as emissions control, are important objectives for us. One example is hydrogen — a key initiative for us right now. Our first hydrogen projects are starting in Europe due to the region’s stricter environmental regulations. North America will be next, with the West Coast as our likely starting point for both the transportation and energy storage segments.”

HOERBIGER is also a longtime supporter of the South Florida Manufacturers Association and local apprenticeship programs designed to strengthen the manufacturing industry and related careers across the region and the state. The company also supports other local organizations, including:

•  Fundraising for victims of Hurricane Ian last year through the American Red Cross and Florida Disaster Fund

•  Career day events for local high school students and employees’ families for Florida Manufacturing Month

•  Annual back-to-school supplies and holiday decorations drives for the SOS Children’s Villages Florida

•  Annual holiday Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots drives

•  Regularly scheduled blood donation drives with OneBlood at its local facilities

Exclusive shooting range set to open in June

Florida's first “guntry” club is set to open this June in Fort Lauderdale, where members will be able to enjoy an exclusive, state of the art shooting range experience along with a host of other luxurious amenities 24 hours a day, including a cigar lounge, gourmet dining, fitness center, squash court, locker rooms, showers, a boardroom for meetings and networking, poker tables and even a barber shop.

“With membership dues you will have full 24-hour access to all the amenities the club offers, including the range,” said Founders Shooting Club Vice President of Member Services Danielle Sarentino.

The shooting range will have the latest in safety technology, including touch screen controls, biometric, iris-scanning security and a state of the art HEPA air filtration equipment.

A variety of training and instructional classes will be offered as well. Instructors will come from the ranks of active and retired military and law enforcement officers. Classes will range from sessions for beginners to tactical, night vision, combat and self-defense training.

Social events are in the works, too. Those will include shooting competitions, dinners prepared by guest chefs from around the world, wine and bourbon tastings, art exhibitions, barbecues and talks from guest speakers.

Founders Shooting Club will be a community of family and friends who enjoy having fun. And the club is committed to being involved with local charities, specifically organizations that assist the families of law enforcement, military and first responders.

The club is being created by Victor Grillo, who has been involved with the Weston Shooters Club, a successful private shooting club in Massachusetts that opened in 2014. Grillo winters in Fort Lauderdale and intends for Founders Shooting Club to be the most exclusive shooting club in America.

"We built New England’s only private ‘guntry’ club and now we look forward to doing the same in Florida," Grillo said. “Nobody has ever seen anything like what this club will be. Think country club meets gun range.”

As it stands, Founders Shooting Club in Fort Lauderdale is only offering 500 charter memberships, with just a limited number remaining at the time of this publication.

“Once the club is at capacity, a waiting list will be implemented,” Sarentino said.

Discounted memberships are available exclusively for members of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, Sarentino said. The club is also offering two other special promotions for Chamber of Commerce members.
