Chamber newcomers welcomed to connect

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce is the largest and oldest business organization in Broward County, with more than 1,200 members. Established in 1910, the Chamber provides members with a host of networking opportunities designed to help promote economic growth and development in South Florida.

For new members, learning to navigate the Chamber can be a tall task, and that is where the Chamber's Ambassadors team comes in.

Initially, Ambassadors are paired with new members and reach out to them with a welcome letter and request to meet for coffee or talk by phone. They are a team of 10 dedicated volunteers attending various meetings, events and ribbon cuttings to help members connect and answer questions. They wear easy-to-see red name badges for this purpose.

“When new members come on board, their heads are spinning, and they’re wondering, ‘Where do I start?’” said Ambassador Committee Chair Ann Mihaiu, who has served in the post for three years. “Our main job over 30, 60 or 90 days is to get them acclimated and involved. We help them to find their niche.”

But do not expect a high-pressured pitch.

“We’re about helping and introducing people and being the friendly face in the crowd,” adds Ann, who owns a magazine publishing business, Fort Lauderdale Media Associates. “Almost everybody who joins the Chamber wants to network and grow their business. Also, they seek to make personal connections and camaraderie.”

Having the backing of an organization committed to growth and business drew Mindy Jennings to the Chamber more than 18 years ago. She is one of the owners of Payrolls Plus, a South Florida-based payroll processing services company. Over the years, she has been an active member and served a stint as chair and co-chair of the Ambassadors. She continues to support the program and guide newcomers.

Why?

“It helps you get the most out of your membership,” Mindy said. “If you feel you can navigate on your own, go for it. But it’s probably best to talk to someone who knows the wide-ranging networking and business development opportunities.”

Since Ambassadors know the ropes, they are a rich resource to those who join afresh.

“We’ll advise them to attend Orientation (second Friday of every month), explore Councils or Chamber breakfast/luncheon/after-hour events, and come with questions to decide which groups will be beneficial to their business,” Mindy said.

The hope is that such encouragement leads to members excited about their involvement and building lasting relationships. “We want to familiarize them early to help them get the most out of their membership,” she said.

Mindy advises new members to start small.

“Do Biz Perks or other ‘mixer’ type of events first, where you get to know people by name,” she said. “Then, when you go to a larger event with 100-300 people, you’ll know someone at the table, and it won’t be so intimidating.”

Overall, this special welcoming committee represents a beloved arm of the Chamber operation.

“There is a saying we believe and convey to all,” Ann said. “If you work the Chamber, the Chamber will work for you.”

In addition to supporting new member involvement, Ambassadors manage the Member of the Month program, recognizing individuals who have gone above and beyond to support the Chamber and fellow members.

Executive Vice President Carolyn Michaels has been with the Chamber for more than 40 years, and she has come to cherish the work this group of volunteers performs. “They are very valuable to us, and we are very dependent on them,” Michaels said. “They are a very dedicated group.”

Besides Ann and Mindy, the Ambassadors team includes Anthony Santana, Bob “Mell” Mellifont, Doreen Robinson, Joseph Mustipher, Kim Praitano, Maria Medina, Soli Rodriguez and Theresa Sebastian.

A Career Built on Improving Our Skyline and Our Future

In October, Charles Ladd will join an exclusive group. He will become the 43rd recipient of the Downtowner of the Year award.

The coveted honor, which was first presented in 1980 to E. Birch Willey, is a program of The Downtown Council, a program of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce and was created to recognize our Downtown leaders and raise awareness about Downtown issues and initiatives.

“The award recognizes a Chamber member who has demonstrated their commitment, passion, and hard work towards moving the needle in making Downtown Fort Lauderdale better for the benefit of all,” explained Elizabeth Van Zandt, Vice-Chair of the Chamber’s Downtown Council and Executive Vice-President of the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority, Title Sponsor for the Downtowner of the Year Event.

“Charles Ladd is a developer that is deeply rooted to the community he serves and always aims to create meaningful spaces with every project that he completes,” Van Zandt said. “He understands the bigger Downtown vision and uses that as the foundation for any new development endeavor he pursues. Charles has volunteered his time to several downtown initiatives over the past two decades and is always willing to roll up his sleeves and has been instrumental in the success of many projects and policy initiatives.”

Ladd is the founder of Barron Real Estate, started in 1991, and has been involved with property ownership, management and leasing on Las Olas Boulevard and Greater Fort Lauderdale for several decades.

He was chosen as Downtowner of the Year following a lengthy selection, review, and voting process first conducted by the Downtown Council, with final review and approval by the larger Chamber Board.

“We look at a list of efforts a candidate has championed or devoted their time to in Downtown Fort Lauderdale that ultimately results in the betterment of the community,” Van Zandt said. “As community members, we don’t often hear about the really great things people are doing that are making positive change happen. The award not only shines a light on what it takes to make progress in a community, it raises awareness to how people can invest in their community and how to get involved and give back.”

Ladd, who hails from St. Louis, Mo., has lived in Fort Lauderdale since 1984.

“Since I was young, I’ve always been fascinated with construction and I knew I wanted to be involved in real estate development,” Ladd said. “Between classes at Saint Louis University, I would drive downtown and watch the high-rise construction go up. To be a developer and owner meant creating a building from nothing and making a real impact on a community.”

While in college, Ladd set his career sights on the Sun Belt after reading a book called MegaTrends, which detailed regions with the hottest opportunities for real estate development.

“I was getting ready to move to Tampa when a friend offered me a job in Fort Lauderdale with his development company, and I jumped at the chance,” he recalled. “I went out on my own after five years, and my first project was developing a large shopping center in Boynton Beach. I loved doing the work and I’ve never looked back.”

Beginning in 1994, downtown Fort Lauderdale became Ladd’s focus (and passion).

“There were maybe four or five buildings, over 10 stories, at that time and I saw so much promise there,” he said. “Today our firm is responsible for over 800 lineal feet of Las Olas Boulevard including the just begun construction of the Whitfield Hotel. This is in addition to nearly half of the frontage along Federal between Broward and Sunrise where many of us visit the shopping centers anchored by CVS, Winn Dixie, and The Fresh Market.”

Ladd's latest new project is a large mixed-use complex under construction on the west side of Federal at NE 6th Street that will feature another grocery store and two apartment towers. All told, his firm is responsible for bringing more than 250,000 square feet of retail to the area, covering more than 30 acres.

“People wanted bigger and better here,” he said. “Our vision and our projects have been well-supported by the retailers who were already there. It was time to transform those main streets lined with very old seasonal residences and dusty spring breaker motels from the 60s to a modern center of retail and commerce – and it’s a place for everyone.”

Even after 30 years of building shopping centers and office buildings, Ladd said “to be in the middle of that, is a joy.”

“I’m so fortunate to be a part of this and I hope to keep contributing to Fort Lauderdale’s growth for many years to come,” Ladd said. “The award is a big honor for a middle-class son of a doctor from the Midwest who had big dreams.”

Navy honors community-wide effort with commissioning of USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD-28)

Fort Lauderdale has a storied history with the US Navy.

More than 80 years ago, the City established a hub for a World War II Naval Air Station, and the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum remains open today.

For more than 30 years, Broward Navy Days / Fleet Week Port Everglades each May welcomes sailors to town. The City hosts events including an air and sea show. There are numerous statues, memorials and landmarks throughout the City honoring the Navy. And many Naval and Coast Guard vessels have been commissioned here.

Now, come Saturday, July 30, Fort Lauderdale will host a commissioning ceremony for the USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD-28), a $1.8 billion amphibious dock ship that was built in Pascagoula, Mississippi. It is the first Naval craft to be named after the city.

“This has been a long time coming, and we’re extremely honored to be recognized this way for the role Fort Lauderdale plays and the relationship it has with the Navy,” Mayor Dean Trantalis said.

The work to get the ship named after the city began about a dozen years ago when retired Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer and longtime Fort Lauderdale resident Chuck Black approached then-Mayor Jack Seiler with the idea.

Black passed away shortly after the official announcement in March 2016 that a ship would be named the USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD-28).

“Chuck deserves a lot of credit. He brought energy and enthusiasm to this effort. I’m sad he won’t be there to see things come to fruition,” Seiler said.

Seiler said getting a ship named is a complicated process, leading to an opportunity to be put in line for consideration, and which Black helped navigate.

Over the years, a wide swath of Fort Lauderdale got behind the cause.

“It’s been a collective, group effort, a ‘we’-building for our community,” Seiler said.

Among those lending a hand have been Patricia Du Mont, a longtime Navy League member, who took the helm of the 160-member USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD-28) Commissioning Committee upon Black’s passing.

During Fleet Week, when the city opens its "doors, arms and hearts to those serving in the Navy," Seiler said, he, Du Mont and others would bring up the topic with official guests to pique interest. They led a bipartisan effort to get Florida’s political leaders behind a commissioning. Members put together a document summarizing the city’s bond with the Navy.

They also headed to Washington, D.C. on several occasions to lobby elected officials and meet with members of the military.

On one visit to the Pentagon, Seiler said he exchanged a Fort Lauderdale cap with a U.S. Navy cap from then-Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

Flash forward to March 2016. Seiler said he was presiding at a city commission meeting when his assistant interrupted to privately tell Seiler he had an important call to take.

“It was Secretary Mabus. I remember him saying, ‘I’m in my office, and I’m wearing my City of Fort Lauderdale hat,’” Seiler said.

Seiler said thinking about that moment still gives him chills. But Mabus swore Seiler to secrecy until the official announcement would be made the following Monday.

“All I could do when I got back to the meeting was smile,” Seiler said.

Since then, and past his final term as Mayor ending in 2018, Seiler has remained part of the committee, which has been holding events and raising money in advance of a week of activities culminating in the commission ceremony.

A kickoff reception in May at The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale featured an appearance from the ship’s captain, James A. Quaresimo, and nautical artwork from local watercolorist Marilyn Johansen, which remained on display for three weeks.

Johansen’s artwork will be featured in the city during the week of the commission, Du Mont said. Activities will also include lectures from ship crew members that will feature virtual tours of the USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD-28). An all-brass concert of patriotic music performed by musicians from the South Florida Symphony Orchestra is set for the evening of Tuesday, July 26, at Terminal 4, Port Everglades. And there will be watch parties throughout the city Saturday, July 30 for the commissioning, which will also be live streamed online.

“The commissioning will be a really proud moment and a lasting tribute to the city,” said Galleria Senior Marketing Manager and Chamber of Commerce Board Chair, Melissa Milroy.

Du Mont said, “This has been a wonderful experience for our community. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the captain of the ship and his crew. The commissioning is a way for us to honor them and their families for their sacrifices and their service to our country.”

The Washington Summit: A delegation of concerned citizens is making a difference

Can one voice really make a difference? According to author Dianne Hardy, “It only takes one voice at the right pitch to start an avalanche.” In South Florida, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce believes that, too.

Every two years, it heeds that adage by sending a large contingent of local business leaders, subject matter experts and other community representatives from across Broward County to the Washington Summit. The three-day lobbying event in the nation’s capital is an opportunity to meet with senators, representatives and foreign embassies in order to push a slate of issues critical to the South Florida business community.

“The Washington Summit is our opportunity to be a voice for all of South Florida,” explained Chamber President & CEO, Dan Lindblade. “The Summit steering committee receives suggestions from our business partners and our issues sub-committee conducts a scan. Then our Government Affairs Council with the Chamber’s board of directors vote on the final selection of issues. We typically bring a slate of around 10 issues to each Summit.”

Burnadette Norris-Weeks, Chair for the 2022 trip and a partner in the law firm, Austin Pamies Norris Weeks Powell, PLLC, noted that the issues are vetted very carefully.

“We take those that are most important and that we can move the needle on — issues that directly impact the South Florida economy and everyone who lives and works here,” said Norris-Weeks who was originally scheduled to chair the 2021 trip which was postponed due to Covid-19. She’s been hard at work coordinating the reorganized Washington Summit which is set for Sept. 19-22, 2022.

The fall 2022 agenda includes several key issues important to the South Florida economy. At the top of the list is Port Everglades.

“Port Everglades remains a high priority issue for this year’s Summit,” Lindblade said. “Deepening and widening as it would open up the waters to containers and petroleum ships. In 2019, we were able to add it back into the Water Appropriations Act. A Summit visit with the Transportation Chair helped get it in there. Investing in Florida’s water infrastructure is a huge win for our environment and economy — true democracy in action.”

There’s a new stumbling block, however. Lindblade said the cost has doubled due to environmental mitigation expenses.

“After Miami built a tunnel several years back, it added to the environmental impact. Now the Corps of Engineers is requiring us to mitigate further.”

This year’s delegates will also speak about trade relations with representatives at the Arab Emirates Embassy.

“Michael Udine, the mayor of Broward County had returned from a trip there, and suggested we add a meeting to our agenda,” Lindblade said. “We have numerous opportunities for foreign trade with the Arab Emirates and it would go a long way toward advancing South Florida’s economy, especially with the anticipated improvements to Port Everglades.”

The full agenda that will be advanced by the 2022 Washington Summit includes:

1.  Support Port Everglades—deepening and widening.

2.  Support Central & South Florida Flood Control System re-study by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

3.  Reauthorize and Reform the National Flood Insurance Program.

4.  Support the Jobs Act — Extending Pell Grants to shorter duration job training programs.

1.  Support Tax Incentives for Green Hydrogen

2.  Support Funding New River Traversing Solution

3.  Support HR 160 – the Restoring Resilient Reefs Act

4.  Support the HELP Act – supports our 2-1-1 system

5.  Real Estate Industry Items:

•  Support Tax Incentives to Convert Underutilized Commercial Property into Residential Units

•  Support Solutions that Spur New Housing Supply

•  Support Tax Incentives for Property Ownership

•  Support Lending Equality for All

The delegation also hopes to advance voting rights on this trip.

“We don’t want any barriers or restrictions for any American citizen who wishes to exercise their votes. We will be talking to both sides of the aisle to ask them to consider this,” Lindblade said.

The Washington Summit is not a unique concept. Many larger chambers across the country have their own version of the trip, but with different timing.

“Typically, they go in the spring when Congress is beginning to move on issues,” Lindblade said. “While we do have smaller spring units, we take our larger delegation in the fall to get ahead of the game. Plus, we’re always poised to return to Washington any time if an issue we’re working on needs that extra effort.”

As a businesswoman, Norris-Weeks is an absolute believer in the power of that “one voice” Dianne Hardy spoke of.

“The Summit means we’re making an effort to be proactive in our involvement and advocacy,” she said. “Every stride and inroad we make bleeds out in positive ways to counties past Broward as well. I also think it’s important to step out in front of issues that aren’t on the radar of our legislators. We can help amplify issues through these trips.”

“As president of the Chamber, I’m looking for wins and movement,” Lindblade said. “I believe we could make it to the finish line this year on Port Everglades and the flood control system — and we couldn’t do any of it without the leadership of people like Burnadette — people willing to step up, leave their businesses for several days, and pay their own way to help get everyone’s voice heard. It speaks volumes about our community.”
