New Chamber Website Called “Amazing” for Members

When Anthony Santana, chair of the Marketing and Technology Council of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, joined the council last year, he decided a revamp of the chamber’s marketing tools, including its website, was necessary.

“The old system was tough to modify,” said Santana, co-founder of Hardcore Advertising in Fort Lauderdale, who is also a member of the chamber’s board and sits on its Executive Committee. “It was a challenge. With our new system we will be able to add, in more prominent places, lead groups and pages important to members. Those are among the reasons the members join the chamber in the first place.”

Adding “the new site will be amazing for membership,” Santana said it will be easier for users to find what they need on the website and also simpler for the chamber to make changes over time. “The staff of the chamber will be able to add pages, update content and copy and different elements important to members,” he said. “Members will be able to take control of their membership journeys. They will be able to identify the committees and councils of interest to them, and council chairs will find it easier to communicate meeting dates and events. They will be able to tailor the response to each member based on the things in which each chamber member is interested.”

In addition, with the new website, the website’s membership directory has become more robust, giving members greater opportunity to add information about their companies, and add employees so they can register on their own to attend events and activities.

Joshua Saunders, communications manager of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, reports the new website will also provide the public greater functionality.

“A lot of people moving into the area call us to ask what to do and where to go. So, we end up pushing them to VisitLauderdale.com,” he said, referring to a website with information on inclusion and accessibility, things to do, events, restaurants, nightlife and places to stay in Greater Fort Lauderdale. “This site will reduce some of that. The homepage will provide the information they need to make those decisions.”

The new website went live in August, Santana reported. The next phase of work on the site will involve updating pages and navigation. The new site “will be like a living, breathing thing,” he added. “It will allow evolution to occur. Anyone who wants to understand that evolution should visit the Marketing and Technology Council, which meets the third Thursday of the month from 12 to 1 p.m. ET.”

The Search for
A New City Manager

When Fort Lauderdale City Manager Greg Chavarria made the surprise announcement he was stepping down after nearly two years in the position, ripples of shock were felt from the office of Mayor Dean Trantalis all the way down to the halls of city government. Almost immediately following the announcement, the wheels began to turn in a search for a new city manager. It’s a search that remains ongoing.

“We’ve had a number of city managers since I’ve been here, five city managers over the course of 17 years,” said Dan Lindblade, president and CEO of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. “We have an acting city manager, Susan Grant. She’s very capable, and she’s assembled her team so we don’t miss a beat.”

According to Lindblade, the city commissioners crafted a resolution asking the chamber to submit two names for possible consideration as the next city manager. Commissioner John C. Herbst nominated Lindblade. Burnadette Norris-Weeks was a consensus pick to represent the community in the resolution, Lindblade recalled.

“A new city manager is necessary, since Greg resigned,” Norris-Weeks said. “I am not sure what the city commissioners are looking for, but they have created a search committee so that citizens and business owners can make that decision.

The seven-member search committee convened its first meeting in mid-August, selecting a chair and a vice chair, Lindblade said. “There is a search firm recruiting candidates,” he added. “They will make recommendations to the search committee, and we will interview those recommended candidates, narrow down the field to finalists, and submit those to the commissioners to review and select the manager.”

The finalists will not be identified until after the November national election. “That was done on purpose,” Lindblade said. “The commissioners didn’t want the current commission to pick the next city manager. They wanted the newly seated commission to make that selection. That commission will be seated after the election.

As for qualities sought in a new city manager, leadership tops the list. That trait is critical given the need to run a big city dealing with significant capital expenditures, including the building of a new city hall and the construction of a new water treatment facility.

“The person chosen will have to be able to oversee all the things a growing and thriving urban core must deal with,” Lindblade said. “It must be someone with a solid track record of success and the ability to build a leadership team. I’m assuming it’s going to be someone from the outside. The business community is looking for someone who can attract new businesses, retain existing businesses and cultivate a thriving business community. It’s seeking a true partner, in every sense of the word.”

Gold Elite Group Helping Launch Entrepreneurial Migration to U.S.

“In other countries, things are not going so well,” Maxime Ouimet said recently. “So, there are many people who want to move here to the United States.”

Helping those individuals enter and remain in the U.S. by means of the E2 Visa is the mission of Ouimet’s company, Gold Elite Group, which opened in Fort Lauderdale this year. The E2 Visa is a gateway to U.S. entrepreneurship, providing foreign investors the opportunity to launch and operate entrepreneurial ventures in this country.

“We are two French Canadians who moved from Montreal to benefit from better opportunities in Fort Lauderdale,” he said of his partner, Jean-Luc Dore, and himself. “The E2 condition is you have to spend $100,000 in the U.S., establishing a business and providing jobs for Americans in order to qualify to stay in this country.”

Ouimet’s own entrepreneurial journey began in his native Quebec in 2017, when he established Scalp Elite, a successful cosmetic scalp micropigmentation studio. The process of scalp micropigmentation involves the use of thin needles to cover thinning areas of the scalp with very small colored dots, mimicking the appearance of thicker hair. The effect of scalp micropigmentation is to conceal thin, balding areas permanently.

The pandemic forced Quimet to shutter his business for months, but also convinced him he needed to expand the company and take it international to reach its full potential.

While retaining his Quebec location, he teamed with an entrepreneurial partner to open his first scalp micropigmentation center in Miami in early 2023. Because they had mastered the immigration process themselves, they launched the idea of specializing in E2 Visas to help foreign investors seeking to relocate to Florida.

“You come from Quebec, Canada, you want to buy one of the locations of our company, we get all the permits and ensure the business will be ready to use, a turnkey business, when these people get their E2 Visas,” Ouimet said. “And we help them get their E2 Visas. The visa is good for five years, and after that you have to prove to U.S. Immigration that your company is viable and making a profit.”

In the last two years, Gold Elite Group has obtained almost two dozen visas for its customers, Ouimet said. “We travel to Canada and tell other businessmen we can build more and more clinics, and help people internationally who want to obtain their visas,” he added. “There are significant growth opportunities.”

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce is the largest and longest-standing business organization in the region. Its diverse membership base is made up of 1,252 companies and encompasses all of Broward County. In order to cast a sharper focus on businesses in the southwestern portion of the county — including Weston, Coral Springs, Miramar and Pembroke Pines — the Greater West Broward Business Council was established as a part of Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce.

The West Broward Council offers southwestern Broward County a broad array of professional opportunities by forging connections between businesses and expanding access to new markets. The West Broward Council includes the West Broward Business Leads Group, made up of 45 businesses, said Victoria Romero, store manager of Fort Lauderdale’s LBU Lighting, and long-time West Broward Council member.

Fostering interaction and support among West Broward business owners and managers is a primary objective of the council. “We hold a Zoom meeting monthly, then do a group social once a quarter” to allow members a chance for face-to-face networking, Romero said. “The council also puts on the Sawgrass Awards for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. In planning the Sawgrass Awards, held each August, we pick a venue holding from 100 to 150 people. The award ceremony we just held took place at The Club at Weston Hills, a golf and country club in Weston. The previous year, we held the ceremony at the Renaissance Fort Lauderdale West Hotel in Plantation.”

At the annual breakfast ceremony, the West Broward Council recognizes, and presents awards to, business people and companies in five different categories.

They are Thought Leader of the Year, Influencer of the Year, Nonprofit of the Year, Business of the Year and Retailer of the Year. One additional award is the Lifetime Achievement Award, bestowed upon a deserving business leader in West Broward County based on his or her lifetime of community contribution and achievement.

“We vigorously support people who are active in the west,” Romero said. “If you are active in the west, the West Broward Council is a terrific platform for getting your business recognized. You not only have to be present at meetings, but your work and your commitment level is going to determine the return you gain on your investment of time and effort. The west is an open, engaging and welcoming community. The members of this community will show up for you, if you show up for them.”
