Location

Flagstaff is located in Northern Arizona on the Colorado Plateau, along historic Route 66 and surrounded by the world’s largest Ponderosa pine forest.

Time Zone

The state of Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time year-round (no Daylight Saving time). However, the Navajo Nation observes Daylight Saving Time (mid-March through early November).

Population

Flagstaff is home to about 77,600 residents and is a diverse mountain community, with roughly 65% identifying as White, 13% American Indian or Alaska Native and nearly 20% Hispanic or Latino, reflecting the city’s rich cultural mix and strong ties to surrounding Tribal Nations.

Climate

Flagstaff has a four-season, high-elevation mountain climate, with mild summers, crisp falls, cold winters and cool springs. Summer days are comfortably warm with low humidity, while winters bring regular snowfall and cooler temperatures than most of Arizona.

At 7,000-feet elevation, Flagstaff’s average yearly temperature is 45° F.

TRANSPORTATION

Flagstaff is at the crossroads of two interstate highways, I-40 leading east and west, and I-17, which runs south toward Phoenix. Pulliam Airport, located 5 miles south of downtown Flagstaff, provides direct flights to Phoenix and Dallas Fort Worth. Amtrak makes one eastbound and one westbound stop each day. Stars, Stripes & Small‑Town Spirit

Kick off Independence Day in style with thousands of others at the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July Parade. The streets of Historic Downtown come alive with colorful floats, marching bands, classic cars, local groups and patriotic pageantry, all set against the cool backdrop of Ponderosa pines and summer skies. It’s a beloved tradition that draws crowds from around Northern Arizona and beyond.

A Magical Ride to the Holidays

Grand Canyon Railway and The Polar Express turn the holiday season into an unforgettable adventure. Families sip hot cocoa, sing along to favorite songs and journey through a magical time tunnel to the North Pole. The rest of the year, the historic train departs from Williams Depot for the Grand Canyon, combining scenic views, Old West excitement and the
charm of a classic rail adventure for
visitors of all ages.

The Great Pinecone Drop

A nearly 30-year-old tradition, The Great Pinecone Drop is a spectacular sight. Thousands of people fill the streets, join in sing-alongs and count down to the New Year as the 70-pound, 6-foot-tall metallic hand-crafted pinecone makes its descent from the Weatherford Hotel. Drops take place at noon, 10 p.m. and midnight to accommodate all ages. The event consistently ranks in USA Today’s 10 Best New Year’s Eve Drops in the country.

Ski Season Starts Here

In winter, skiers and snowboarders of all levels carve down 61 runs across 777 acres of mountain terrain at Arizona Snowbowl. Explore beginner slopes, challenging black-diamond trails and terrain parks. Snowmaking helps ensure a reliable season that typically runs from mid-November through March or April, and there are lessons, rentals and scenic chairlift service for all ages.

Holiday LightS Parade

Each December, Historic Downtown Flagstaff sparkles a little brighter with the free Annual Holiday Parade of Lights. Floats adorned with thousands of twinkling lights, music and creative decorations wind through the streets of downtown as the community and visitors come together to celebrate the season. You better be good — Santa makes his grand appearance! The Greater Flagstaff Chamber lights up downtown annually with its holiday lights parade.

Out of Africa Wildlife Park offers a one-of-a-kind wildlife experience just north of Flagstaff. Set on wide-open high-desert terrain, the park is home to lions, tigers, giraffes, zebras and other exotic animals, with opportunities to observe them up close in spacious, naturalistic habitats. Guided safari tours and educational encounters highlight wildlife conservation and animal care, making the park both entertaining and informative for all ages.

Meteor Crater — A Cosmic Wonder

Just east of Flagstaff, Meteor Crater is one of the world’s best-preserved impact sites, offering a dramatic glimpse into Earth’s history. Formed more than 50,000 years ago when a massive meteor struck Northern Arizona, this enormous crater stretches nearly a mile wide and plunges 550 feet deep. Black Bears, Alaskan Tundra Wolves, River Otters and many more North American animals are waiting to meet you at Bearizona, a wildlife park located on 160 acres in Williams, Arizona. Visitors can drive through three miles of forested areas where you will see larger animals roaming within their own habitats. Drive through as many times as you would like before the posted last admittance. Stroll through Fort Bearizona to get an up-close look at jaguars, grizzly bears and the playful antics of smaller animals.

Lowell Observatory

Lowell Observatory is where the night sky comes alive, anchoring Flagstaff’s legacy as the world’s first International Dark Sky City. Recognized by both TIME and Newsweek as a premier global destination, Lowell offers a magical connection to the cosmos for all ages. Visitors can peer through world-class telescopes or explore the state-of-the-art Astronomy Discovery Center, featuring immersive exhibits and interactive learning spaces. The center’s crown jewel is the rooftop, open-air planetarium, which showcases the Milky Way in breathtaking detail. Open: Wednesday – Monday, 12 p.m. – 10 p.m.

PICKIN’ IN THE PINES

The Pepsi Amphitheater at Fort Tuthill Park, set amid the cool Ponderosa pine forest, is Northern Arizona’s premier outdoor concert venue. With seating for up to about 3,000 guests and a beautifully designed covered stage, this amphitheater combines big-name live music, festivals and community events with the natural beauty and comfortable summer climate that Flagstaff is known for. People come from all over for rock, blues and bluegrass. An all-crowd favorite, the Pickin’ in the Pines Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year September 18-20.

Home to the largest beginner terrain in the Southwest and 2,300 feet of vertical, Arizona Snowbowl provides runs for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. Arizona Nordic Village

The Arizona Nordic Village is the destination for both adventure and celebration throughout the year. Arizona’s only Nordic ski area, guests can glide across groomed cross-country ski trails or explore the snow-covered landscape on snowshoes, while cozy yurts and cabins offer the perfect retreat after a day in the high country. Beyond winter, the village hosts bike and foot races. With its rustic charm and panoramic mountain views, it’s a unique wedding venue.

Flagstaff Snow Park

You can sled or play at the Flagstaff Snow Park, just minutes south of town. With groomed snow tubing runs, a designated kiddie hill and plenty of open snow play areas to build snowmen, make a snow angel or have snowball fights, it’s winter fun for every age and pace. Afterward, gather around the bonfire to roast marshmallows, enjoy tasty bites from food trucks or simply relax with hot cocoa.

Flagstaff Urban Trail System

The 59-mile Flagstaff Urban Trails System (FUTS) of interconnected paved and unpaved pathways makes it easy to experience Flagstaff’s outdoor lifestyle and stunning high-country scenery. Bike, hike, walk or run through neighborhoods, forests and open spaces. FUTS is part of Flagstaff’s plan to move toward carbon neutrality, with 75 more miles of future trails expected.

The Barefoot Trail

Come and explore the all-ages outdoor adventure park with 35 adventure stations for your bare feet! Use all your senses while grounding on this manicured 1-mile forested trail through dirt, mud, water, sand, stone and rocks. Foot fun for everyone!

Starlite Lanes

Located on historic Route 66, this mid-century landmark is Arizona’s second-oldest bowling alley. In 2015, Chris and Stacy Thornley created the original Squirrel’s Nut Butter blend in their kitchen as a remedy to their daughter’s severe eczema. “In the manufacturing process, I visualize where in the world it might go, who might use it and what kind of adventure they might be on,” he said. While providing adventurers around the world with a comfortable experience is important, the long-term goal is to offer the salve to cancer patients after radiation treatment and amputees to improve stub health. “That’s what it’s all about,” said Chris. “That’s real. That’s why I come to work each day.”

NESTLÉ PURINA PETCARE COMPANY

Making dry pet food in Flagstaff for half a century as a full manufacturing facility and distribution center, Nestlé Purina PetCare is a major force in Northern Arizona. The local factory receives and cooks the raw ingredients, packages the food, stores it in a warehouse and then distributes it to customers across the Southwest region. With the BNSF Railway, along with two interstate highways, Purina Flagstaff serves Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Hawaii and New Zealand. Each year, the manufacturing factory produces more than 300,000 tons of premium dog and cat food – that’s more than 28.5 million 25-pound bags of pet food! The company has an estimated annual economic impact of $54 million on the area and is one of Flagstaff’s largest employers with more than 300 employees, including veterinarians and scientists.

Recently, Purina invested $46 million into its Flagstaff operations to keep up with the growing demand for dry pet food, while maintaining its focus on quality, safety and sustainability. In 2018, the Purina Flagstaff team achieved its Zero Waste goal, finding ways to derive benefits from materials that would have been discarded.
