3 MAYORS - 3 QUESTIONS

Have you ever wondered what your mayor feels is their biggest accomplishment? The Fife Milton Edgewood Chamber of Commerce recently spoke with the mayors of Milton, Edgewood and Fife, about leadership, their passion for serving and the hidden gems that make their communities special.
City of Milton
Mayor Shanna Styron Sherrell
Spurred by the construction of the Interurban Railway in the early 1900s, Milton – originally
called “Mill Town” – incorporated in 1907 and “grew into a bedroom community
mainly for those who commuted to the larger, surrounding cities to work.” Today, with Tacoma just
10 minutes away, Milton maintains its small-town appeal, as community members enjoy nature, close ties
and a supportive local government. In 2025, Milton will vote for a new mayor as incumbent Shanna Styron
Sherrell decided not to run for a third term. She had this to say about her time as mayor of the
community she has proudly served:
What’s been the most rewarding part of being mayor?
If I can only choose
one, it’s knowing the positive impact I’ve had on our youth. Whether through supporting
youth programs, connecting with students or simply showing up to cheer them on, I’ve wanted them
to see that leaders can listen, care and lead with compassion.
A close second has been strengthening connections across our community through programs that serve
seniors, connect families and bring people together.
What sets your time as mayor apart from your predecessors?
I believe I’ve led
with transparency and a commitment to treating everyone equally. My focus has been on keeping our
community rooted, from enhancing our parks and modernizing City Hall to beautifying spaces throughout
the city. I’ve also worked to strengthen community connection through programs and events, while
improving how we communicate by revamping the website, launching a newsletter, installing reader boards
and adding social media to keep residents informed.
If you had more time, what would you keep building or expanding?
Without a doubt,
sidewalks! We’ve made great progress in expanding sidewalk access over the past eight years.
Today, we have connections to the ballfield, Interurban Trail, school campus, City Hall and even Highway
99 that didn’t exist before. Projects are underway along 23rd Avenue and Oak Street at Milton
Community Park. As I leave office, the city is in a strong financial position to keep this momentum
going and continue building safe, connected walkways for our community.
City of Edgewood
Mayor Dave Olson
Located in northern Pierce County, with Milton and Fife bordering to the west, the City of Edgewood was
“developed from homesteaders who settled there beginning in the 1860s through the 1890s.”
Large lots, open spaces and recreational opportunities are plentiful in Edgewood where residents enjoy a
quiet, community-focused and family-friendly environment. Along with his wife, Cheryl, Edgewood Mayor
Dave Olson, a former Edgewood City Council member, raised his four daughters in Edgewood. He is honored
to be part of the community and to have served the city’s residents since his four-year term
started on January 1, 2024.
What’s been the most rewarding part of being mayor?
I love being able to meet
and interact with so many friendly, supportive people here in Edgewood, including our youth. Sometimes
the whiners and complainers, and online trolls, can drown out others temporarily, but at the end of the
day, the appreciative and understanding contingent far outweigh everyone else. We have an incredible
community.
What’s something people misunderstand about the role of a mayor?
Being a
mayor is not unlike other organizations where the top person gets too much credit when things are going
well and too much blame when things are not. In reality, though, many more people have a hand in the
success of something positive in a community. We have an incredible team at City Hall, and we have great
boards and commissions of volunteer community members that are all working well together to move our
city forward.
What’s a hidden gem in your city that you wish people knew more about?
Our
longstanding citizens with historical knowledge of our past. Our age is deceptive here in Edgewood.
While our city incorporated about 30 years ago, our community dates back to the early 1900s. We have
many people here who are well over 100 years old, and a few centenarians who have some stories that I
would love to dig out of them. I’ll be spending some time in 2026 doing just that and will find a
way to disseminate that history. Stay tuned.
City of Fife
Mayor Kim Roscoe
Situated in the shadow of Mt. Rainier and entirely on the traditional homelands of the Puyallup People,
the City of Fife is often identified by many in the region because of I-5 and Highway 99. However, far
more than roads connect this community of 11,300 residents. In Fife, neighbors support one another,
local businesses and the Fife School District. Local traditions thrive, and community pride runs deep.
Mayor Kim Roscoe refers to Fife as “a small city with big-city energy.” She had this to say
about the city where she has proudly served for many years:
What’s been the most rewarding part of being mayor?
I’ve served as
mayor for the Fife City Council and City since 2017, but I’m a council member first. It has been
incredibly rewarding to work alongside council members to unite and strengthen the city’s sense of
identity and pride. Satisfaction comes when I can give answers or facilitate solutions. It’s
especially wonderful to see the look of surprise when a Fife Harvest Festival attendee realizes the free
ears of corn they receive are handed to them by the mayor or a council member, and husked and roasted by
Fife employees.
What’s something people misunderstand about the role of a mayor?
The City of
Fife uses a council-manager form of government, where an elected city council makes decisions, and an
appointed city manager carries them out and oversees daily operations. The mayor is the lead council
member and serves as chair but holds no more power than other council members. The mayor often sets
priorities, represents the city and builds consensus, but they’re not personally directing
projects or hiring. People are often surprised that the position of mayor is a part-time position and
that the mayor – and council members – often have another job.
What’s a hidden gem in your city that you wish people knew more about?
Our
amazing staff that serves with compassion and works hard to ensure our citizens feel safe and have
nearly uninterrupted access to vital services and that businesses have services and infrastructure that
allow them to thrive.
Other gems: Dacca Barn; Engine Number 684; Riverside Valley Grange Hall; Brookville Gardens Park; iconic restaurants like The Poodle Dog and PICK-QUICK; Balloon Roof Baking Company and Emish Market; the Fife History Museum; and of course, the view of Mt. Rainier.

When Fife Milton Edgewood Chamber members were asked what they value most, the answer was clear:

In a spring 2025 membership survey, business leaders shared that the most appreciated benefit of

How We Connect: The FME Chamber offers multiple ways for members to stay engaged and
build meaningful relationships. Our Business Lunch, held on the second Wednesday of each month, brings
the community together to hear from influential leaders and organizations. In 2025, we welcomed a
dynamic lineup of speakers including Mayor Kim Roscoe, Mayor Dave Olson, Mayor Shanna Styron Sherrell,
Amazon, South Sound Military Partnership, Pierce County Transit, WSDOT, Washington State Fair, the Port
of Tacoma and the police chiefs from our communities. We also heard from the Puyallup Tribe and FLS
Accounting, who shared insight on the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

coffee, conversation and the chance to learn more about the host organization.

BJ’S BINGO & GAMING
From Humble Beginnings to a World-Class Entertainment Destination

What started 45 years ago as a “modest 100-seat bingo hall” has grown into a
“world-class gaming and entertainment experience.” Despite this impressive growth,
BJ’s Bingo & Gaming has always maintained its small business mentality.
Located just 20 miles south of Seattle along the I-5 corridor on the Puyallup Reservation, BJ’s
Social Club – the gaming facility’s original name – was founded in 1980 by Bertha Jane
(BJ) and Pernell Ray Turnipseed, and their children, Connie Hale and McKenzie Turnipseed. “They
established this company with a heartfelt mission to provide for their family, staff and the broader
community,” said Shawn Turnipseed, McKenzie’s daughter and BJ’s Bingo & Gaming’s
secretary of the board.
Shawn Turnipseed, a third-generation shareholder at the 90,000-square-foot facility, has proudly worked
in the family business since 1997. Among the 320 current employees at BJ’s Bingo & Gaming,
approximately 20 percent have been there for at least 20 years, including one employee who has been
there since Day 1. “Our employees are an extension of our family,” Shawn said.
Today, BJ’s Bingo & Gaming welcomes well over 1,000 guests each day. The facility has grown
beyond its bingo roots to offer a diverse range of entertainment, including electronic gaming machines
and other casino-style games — attracting a vibrant and varied clientele.
“Our commitment to a clean, safe and welcoming atmosphere — where guests and staff are
treated like family — and our deep involvement in the community have been cornerstones of our
success,” she said.
Another cornerstone is the family’s reliance on involving multiple generations in the business.
By doing so, Turnipseed said they have blended traditional values with modern perspectives, ensuring
adaptability and growth and “making strategic decisions that align with our core values of
integrity, family-friendly service and community engagement.”
The family’s decision years ago to expand and upgrade the facility’s offerings is helping
it differentiate itself from larger corporate chains in the area by delivering well-rounded experiences
that cater to the varied interests of its guests.
The massive expansion project that started one month before the onset of COVID is expected to reach its
completion in 2025. Some of the latest upgrades to BJ’s Bingo & Gaming include additional parking;
the re-opening of Smokey Joe’s Cigar Lounge, a sophisticated, laid-back retreat where guests can
enjoy a premium cigar collection and comfortable seating; a new slot room; a remodeled Mr. Ray’s
Café; and the August 2024 opening of Ms. Jane’s Fine Dining, where guests can enjoy a warm
ambiance and a selection of premium steaks, sumptuous seafood, tantalizing pasta and a meticulously
curated wine list.
“Our general manager and building chief have done an amazing job over the last six years to get
all this work done while maintaining the business throughout this entire experience,” Shawn
Turnipseed said. “And our guests have been so fabulous during this time.”
Looking ahead, BJ’s is focused on enhancing its gaming options, enriching its culinary offerings
and strengthening its community initiatives.
“We are also committed to sustainability, using technology to boost customer engagement and
growing our offerings to deliver memorable experiences,” she added.

FROM CARGO TO CANVAS: STUDENTS DISCOVER ART AT THE PORT OF TACOMA

What started as an introduction between the Port of Tacoma’s Community Affairs
team and two Fife School District art teachers evolved into an eye-opening experience for all –
especially for the Fife High School and Columbia Junior High students who learned that art is
everywhere, including a space where you might just equate with shipping containers, cranes and cargo
ships.
“Columbia Junior High art teacher Melissa Brownell and I were approached by the Port about a
possible project involving art students and the Port at our annual Fife District Art show,” said
Katy Baur, a Fife High School art teacher. “We, as individual teachers, decided what to do with
our students, but we knew we wanted to create a field trip together so the students could see and
experience areas of the Port.”
In preparation for the Port of Tacoma field trip, the students in Baur’s Studio II advanced art
class reviewed one- and two-point perspective techniques. Students’ paintings for this project
were based on their own photographs of the industrial side of the Port or the natural habitats that the
Port protects. “I also let students decide if they wanted to add three-dimensional aspects to
their paintings, and some did!” Baur said.
During the Port tour, students were “surprised by how many natural spaces the Port protects and
took note of local plants and animals that are seen around the Port area,” Baur said. “For
many, it reinforced the idea of protecting our native habitat.”
The tour also helped students learn about different career options at the Port.
“It was a treat to take Fife students on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Port,” said Katie
Skelton, community relations specialist at the Port of Tacoma. “Some students took a keen interest
in the habitat sites, while others zeroed in on visual details of the Port that often go unnoticed, such
as the patchwork pattern of stacked containers. One student had several questions about the wildlife at
Place of Circling Waters habitat site.”
Soon thereafter, Skelton said, plans were finalized to showcase the students’ Port-inspired art
during the Fife Milton Edgewood Chamber’s After Hours event at the Port of Tacoma. On May 8, the
atrium of the Port of Tacoma’s Administration Building transformed into an art gallery, as
students met with Port commissioners, displayed the three-dimensional aspects that brought life to their
artwork and received much-deserved gifts and praise for all their efforts.
“It was a lot of work, but a great experience for our students and their families,” Baur
said. “It’s always nice to be able to get recognition for art students! It helps promote our
STEAM programs as well, and we hope to collaborate with our community more often!”
STEAM educational programs focus on building students’ skills in science, technology,
engineering, the arts and mathematics.
The Port of Tacoma is also excited about developing more of these types of partnerships.
“The Port is always looking for ways to partner with local educators,” Skelton said.
“We usually focus on introducing students to careers in the trades and the maritime industry, so
an expansion into art was something new. It was a great experience, and we look forward to future
opportunities.”

FIFE HISTORY MUSEUM & CULTURAL CENTER
The Fife Historical Society’s mission is “Building Community through History.” Since
2000, the Society has preserved and shared the stories of Fife’s people, places and
traditions.
Located in the former home of Louis and Marion Dacca—farmers and community leaders—the Fife
History Museum and Cultural Center is rooted in local history. After the Dacca family sold the home to
the City of Fife, it was restored and transformed into a museum surrounded by what is now Dacca Park.
Today, the museum houses more than 1,500 artifacts, photographs and documents that tell Fife’s
story, including a popular restored 1950’s working kitchen.
Visitors can also explore a variety of rotating and permanent exhibits. Current highlights include
Behind Barbed Wire, sharing stories of WWII internment at Camp Harmony; Brookville Gardens, honoring the
Yotsuuye family’s resilience; and Sanitary Infant Dairy, featuring Fife’s dairy history.
Community favorites include the Poodle Dog Restaurant and Century Ballroom, the HiDive at Surprise Lake
and a look back at KMO Radio. The museum also offers the Book Nook with 500+ donated volumes, the
nostalgic Dacca Family Kitchen and Andre’s Market gift shop.
