On behalf of the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce, welcome to everyone reading our community guide!
We are a vibrant Chamber in the heart of Virginia and love to showcase our membership and all that our
thriving community has to offer.
Since 1948, the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce has strived to improve the lives of those living and
doing business in our community. Alongside our members, we provide educational initiatives, promote
tourism, serve as advocates for local businesses and seek opportunities to aid a diverse and growing
population. We hope that this magazine will give you a taste of all that our vibrant community brings to
rural Southside Virginia.
Farmville is home to fantastic shopping, incredible dining and entertainment. It also hosts the
Farmville Flower & Garden Festival, the Farmville Wedding Expo, the
Heart of Virginia Festival, the Holiday House Tour, along with many
other beloved community traditions.
Come visit us and experience the smalltown charm and Southern hospitality the Farmville and Prince
Edward County area has to offer. The community hosts a Christmas tree lighting, Christmas parade, movie
nights on Main Street with Stars under the Stars and live music at our favorite restaurants and venues
throughout the year.
Home to Longwood University, Hampden-Sydney College and Southside Community College, the community
takes pride in our collegiate atmosphere, as well as the culture and activities that come with it.
Farmville has been recognized as America’s first two-college town.
We also cultivate leadership through programs such as Leadership Farmville and the
Leadership Farmville Youth Summit, and our Certificate of Employability
Program, all of which empower emerging leaders and strengthen ties between education,
business and civic engagement.

The Tale of Virginia’s Heartland From Civil War To Civil Rights
Our area, known as Virginia’s Heartland, is rich in history that tells a story of courage and
perseverance. Located in the Heart of Virginia, the Farmville Area includes the Town of Farmville, the
County of Cumberland and the County of Prince Edward.
Prince Edward County dates to 1754; Cumberland County to 1749; and the Town of Farmville to 1798.
Farmville soon became the center of trade, education, law and finance for the surrounding seven
counties, a position it maintains today, as the largest municipality between Richmond and Lynchburg.
It is home to many successful businesses, industries and cultural and educational organizations.
Hampden-Sydney College, a selective private four-year college, was founded in 1776; Longwood University,
chartered in 1839 as Farmville Female Seminary, was the first state teacher training college in the
Commonwealth of Virginia.
Patrick Henry, five-time Governor of Virginia, served as Prince Edward’s representative in the
Virginia General Assembly. As the county’s representative, he participated with John Randolph in
debates over the ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
The first call for independence came from Cumberland County; when the certainty of the approaching
conflict came, Cumberland led the Colonies in calling for a completely independent American nation. On
April 22, 1776, from the balcony of Effingham Tavern, Carter H. Harrison read the committee’s
instruction to the county delegates to the state convention: “We therefore, your constituents,
instruct you positively to declare for an Independency, that you solemnly adjure any allegiance to His
Britannic Majesty and bid him a good night forever …” The Virginia Convention decided to
follow Cumberland’s lead, and this resulted in the Virginian Resolutions, which were presented to
the Continental Congress and embodied in the Declaration of Independence.
The Civil War left its mark on Farmville, with its last major battle at nearby Sailor’s Creek. On
April 6, 1876, just three days before the surrender at Appomattox Court House, nearly a quarter of
General Lee’s army – more than 7,700 men – were killed, wounded or captured at the
Battle of Sailor’s Creek.
Lee then retreated directly through the town, and the Confederates crossed and then attempted to burn
the railroad’s impressive High Bridge, a 120-foot-high, nearly half-mile-long span across the
Appomattox River. The bridge and other sites along Lee’s Retreat are part of the state’s
Civil War Trails.
Farmville is also home to some key players in the early fight for civil rights. In 1951, in Farmville,
Virginia, 16-year-old Barbara Johns bravely organized and inspired her fellow 450 students to walk out
of school and protest the overcrowded and inadequate conditions at Prince Edward County’s
all-Black Robert Russa Moton High School. This strike launched a 13-year struggle for better educational
opportunities in Prince Edward County that emblematized the youth-driven efforts for civil rights across
the United States.
The original court case, Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County, that arose from the
strike was one of the five cases decided by the Supreme Court in its 1954 Brown v. Board of Education
decision. It was the only case initiated by students.
This citizens’ crusade for equal rights in education drew Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other
national leaders to visit our area. The Robert Russa Moton High School, site of the 1951 student strike,
is a National Historic Landmark, a civil rights museum and the centerpiece of Virginia’s Civil
Rights in Education Heritage Trail, honoring the efforts of local students and citizens who paved the
way for integrated public education nationwide.
A marker at the county courthouse titled “The Light of Reconciliation,” acknowledges the county’s racial history and makes the promise to prevent any future inequalities from taking place in the county. The story of civil rights in Prince Edward County and Virginia teaches people about the capacity of everyday, local people to use their constitutional rights to create lasting social change.
Farmville is home to many successful businesses, industries, and cultural and educational

Prince Edward Business Park and Farmville Industrial Park
Commercially zoned sites attract new industries
Prince Edward Business Park
Prince Edward County partners with the Prince Edward County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) to
support business recruitment, retention and expansion through grants, loans and site development
initiatives. The IDA owns four shovel-ready industrial and commercially zoned sites, totaling more than
100 acres, all available for sale and actively marketed to attract new industry.
Designated as an Enterprise Zone and supported by a growing roster of employers, the Prince Edward
Business Park remains a key driver of the local economy. Major manufacturers located in the park
include:
■ Tri-Boro Shelving and Partitions Corporation and Tri-Boro Rack and Storage, producers of
metal shelving, racks and storage systems.
■ Paris Ceramics USA, Inc. is a manufacturer of custom, high-end stone tiles, countertops
and specialty decorative stone products. The Prince Edward County facility serves as the company’s
only international warehouse.
■ 5 Pillar Meats, LLC, is a family-owned, USDA-inspected meat processing facility serving
cattle, sheep and goats. The company emphasizes high-quality products, ethical sourcing and strong
support for Virginia farmers. This business is the newest addition to the park as of fall 2025.
In addition to manufacturing operations, the Business Park is home to a diverse mix of public services,
nonprofits and commercial enterprises, including the Southside Virginia YMCA, FACES/FeedMore Food
Pantry, Social Security Administration offices, Virginia Department of Transportation district offices,
Lowe’s Home Improvement and the Prince Edward County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension.
Recent additions that opened in 2025 include Harbor Freight, Wawa Convenience Store and Flagstop Car
Wash.
Farmville Industrial Park
The Farmville Industrial Park is home to YakAttack, a nationally recognized leader in the kayak fishing
industry. YakAttack designs and manufactures innovative fishing gear that is proudly made in the USA.
The park also includes several well-maintained industrial facilities and available lots that are ready
to be developed for value-added manufacturing and industrial operations.
Additional Industrial Development Assets
Beyond the County’s business and industrial parks, the Luck Stone Prince Edward Plant represents
a significant industrial presence. The quarry supplies crushed stone, sand and gravel that support
construction and infrastructure projects throughout the region.
Prince Edward County was designated a Certified ACT Work Ready Community in 2021, demonstrating a
strong commitment to workforce development and to meeting employers’ needs for a skilled,
job-ready labor force.

The Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the second Farmville Wedding Expo at Spruceberry Farm in
Cumberland County. The Expo brought together engaged couples, families and wedding professionals for an
afternoon of inspiration, ideas and local connections. Attendees had the opportunity to meet a wide
variety of trusted vendors representing venues, catering, photography, beauty services, rentals and
wedding planning—all in one convenient location.
Designed to simplify the planning process while showcasing the region’s strong local business community, the Farmville Wedding Expo highlighted the talent and services available throughout Southside Virginia. The event supported local businesses by connecting them directly with couples planning weddings and showcased the breadth of services available in Southside Virginia.

Captivating Attractions: Explore Amenities for All Ages
ARTS & CULTURE
The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) is the only museum of its kind, scope
and size in the region. The museum is dedicated to improving quality of life through full access to the
visual arts and admission is free to all visitors. Through rotating exhibitions, a permanent collection,
educational programming and volunteer and internship opportunities, the LCVA fosters creativity,
intellectual curiosity and community engagement across all ages.
Both Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood University regularly open
their campuses to the public, hosting concerts, theatrical performances, lectures, public forums and
seminars throughout the year. The Esther Thomas Atkinson Museum, located on
Hampden-Sydney College’s campus, features a permanent exhibition documenting the history of the
college along with space for rotating exhibits.
Farmville is also home to the nationally significant Robert Russa Moton Museum, housed
in the former Robert Russa Moton High School, now a National Historic Landmark. Known as the student
birthplace of America’s Civil Rights Revolution, the museum tells the powerful story of the 1951
Moton Student Strike led by 16-year-old Barbara Johns. That courageous act produced three-fourths of the
plaintiffs in Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the landmark Supreme Court decision that
desegregated public schools in the United States. The museum is free and open to the public, with guided
tours available.
Opportunities to engage in hands-on creativity are plentiful throughout the region, with a variety of
art classes and workshops available for both children and adults. Mainly Clay Pottery
offers handmade gifts, pottery supplies for home studios and public workshops where participants can
create their own pieces on the potter’s wheel or through hand-building techniques. Weekly classes
are open to the public and range from functional pieces like birdhouses and butter dishes to more
advanced creative projects.
Community learning is further supported by the Barbara Rose Johns Farmville-Prince Edward
Community Library, which provides a wide range of services both online and in person.
Offerings include computers, Wi-Fi, printing, scanning, technology classes, tax assistance, meeting and
study rooms, test proctoring and robust children’s programming. The Cumberland County
Public Library also serves the region, offering free high-speed internet and access to
Microsoft Office on public computers.
Entertainment options round out the area’s cultural amenities, with Sunchase Cinema
8 featuring the latest films and Main Street Lanes offering both
family-friendly and league bowling.

PARKS
The region has a number of memorable state parks.
Sailor Creek Battlefield State Park offers a crash course in Civil War History. The park is home to the
Battles of Sailor’s Creek, which was one of the last battles before General Robert E. Lee
surrendered at Appomattox Court House. The visitor center offers a neat look at relics of the Civil War,
as well as opportunities to walk or drive through portions of the 34-acre park.

Bear Creek Lake State Park, with a 40-acre lake and access to the 16,000-acre Cumberland State Forest,
offers something for everyone. The park has a boat launch, fishing pier, boat rentals and a swimming
beach as well as cabins, camping, picnicking, an archery range and playgrounds. There’s also a
14-mile Cumberland Multi-use Trail, available for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

The High Bridge is among the most recognizable landmarks near the Town of Farmville. The bridge, more
than 2,400 feet long and suspended 125 feet in the air above the Appomattox River, is part of a
31.2-mile trail. The High Bridge Trail State Park encompasses Cumberland and Prince Edward counties.
There are also hiking trails in the park, and the 31-mile trail is available for horseback riding.
Take a break from the trail by visiting the Farmville downtown Main Street Plaza or stopping at Three
Roads Brewery that offers crafted beer, food trucks and live music!
The park is also home to the Firefly Festival, held every summer when fireflies are the most visible.
There are also frequent educational programs, and junior ranger day camps.
While the trail can be accessed in downtown Farmville, entrances closest to the bridge can be accessed
at the park’s Camp Paradise entrance, located off Aspen Hill Road in Rice, or at 555 River Road in
Farmville.

ATHLETICS
Rolling hills and challenging yet rewarding experiences are par for the course for the golfing
community in Farmville.
The Manor Golf Club makes for a fantastic golfing option. The Club was chosen as one of the “Best
New Golf Courses of 2007” by Golf Digest Magazine.
There are five sets of tees on each hole, giving golfers of all experience levels a chance to try their
hand. The multiple tees allow golfers to play a challenging layout of 5,367 yards from the forward tees
and stretching to 7,214 yards on the championship tees.

If you’re a student or faculty member, be sure to take advantage of the TigerRec Center at
Hampden-Sydney, which includes a fitness center, a disc golf course, swimming pool and racquetball

30-foot climbing wall, a track and multi-purpose gymnasium.

THE YMCA
The Southside Virginia Family YMCA at 580 Commerce Road in Farmville is proud to be a place where the
community comes together to grow, learn and thrive. The Y is for youth development, healthy living and
social responsibility, and we strive to engage the community through programs, services and support that
benefit everyone. From helping children build confidence and life skills, to providing adults and
families opportunities to stay active, to assisting neighbors in need, the Y serves as a hub for
connection, care and community engagement.
In addition to wellness and recreation programs, the Y is a warming and cooling station and charging
center during power outages, offering hot showers and a safe, welcoming space for local residents.

Scholarships & Membership Assistance
Through the Y’s Annual Campaign scholarship program, community support ensures access for
everyone. Scholarships directly support swim lessons for children and youth sports, and the Y also
provides reduced-cost memberships so that all members of our community can participate. These programs
promote safety, teamwork, personal growth and a sense of belonging.
Wellness Orientations
All members receive free wellness orientations, meeting with trained coaches to set personal goals and
create a customized fitness plan—all designed to help members thrive within the community at
large.
“At the Y, everyone is welcome, and together we make our community stronger, healthier and more
connected because when our neighbors thrive, we all thrive,” said Zeisig.
EVENTS
Cumberland County hosts Cumberland’s Patriot’s Day at the county courthouse on the third
Saturday of April. This family-friendly celebration features food and craft vendors, children’s
games, bounce houses and live music.
Each September, the streets of downtown Farmville come alive for the Heart of Virginia Festival, a
beloved community tradition founded in 1979. This day-long event showcases art, crafts, food and a wide
assortment of vendors throughout downtown Farmville.
Fireworks After Dark, the Town of Farmville’s Independence Day celebration, takes place along
Main Street in downtown Farmville. The event includes food trucks, a bounce house and activities for all
ages, culminating in fireworks launched from the roof of Town Hall.
Farmville Fridays is a free monthly community concert series held May through October at Riverfront
Park in downtown Farmville. Families and friends gather to enjoy live music, children’s activities
and a relaxed evening atmosphere. While admission is free, food and drinks are available for
purchase.
Stars Under the Stars, held at Crute Stage in downtown Farmville, takes place on the second Friday of
June, July and August. This outdoor movie series features classic films and is free and open to the
public. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs and enjoy popcorn under the night sky.
The Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Flower & Garden Festival each May in downtown

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1839, Longwood University is one of America’s hundred-oldest colleges and
universities. It is Virginia’s third-oldest public institution of higher education and is
routinely ranked in the nation’s top 10 regional public universities by U.S. News & World Report.

Southside Virginia Community College
Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) proudly serves the City of Emporia and the counties of
Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Greensville, Halifax (partial), Lunenburg, Mecklenburg,

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE
Currently celebrating the 250th anniversary of its founding, Hampden-Sydney College is the tenth-oldest
institution of higher education in the United States. Hampden-Sydney is a private all-male institution
located on a beautiful 1,300-acre campus in the Heart of Virginia and is as steadfast today as it was at

Piedmont Senior Resources is a one-stop shop for older adults at every stage of life. PSR offers direct

THE WOODLAND
Community leaders, led by a local doctor who was looking for nursing care for his aging mother, in 1970
