Welcome to Donelson Hermitage, the Gateway to Music City!

Nashville’s only Christmas Parade takes place in early December and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2025. Walk, bike, run, and explore the more than 10 miles of the Stones River Greenway. The trail extends from the Cumberland River Pedestrian Bridge and Shelby Bottoms to the J. Percy Priest Dam Trailhead and dog park, with connectors to Hickory Hill, the Donelson-Hermitage YMCA, and Stewarts Ferry Pike. GREENWAYS AND WATERWAYS

The Donelson Hermitage area boasts stunning waterways, with Percy Priest Lake and the Cumberland River as key attractions. Percy Priest Lake, a 42-mile reservoir and one of the nation’s most visited lakes, is a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s perfect for boating, fishing, camping, and lakeside recreation. The lake is served by several marinas, including Nashville Shores and Elm Hill Marina. Both offer boat rentals, fuel, dining, and RV camping. Nashville Shores also features a waterpark, zip lines, and lakeside cabins, making it an excellent family-friendly destination.

The lake is surrounded by various campgrounds, such as Anderson Road Campground, Seven Points Campground, and Long Hunter State Park, offering access to beaches, hiking trails, and picnic spots. Additionally, the scenic Stones River, which flows into Percy Priest Lake, is perfect for paddling and fishing. The Percy Priest Lake Wildlife Management Area nearby provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and
outdoor exploration.

Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage

The home of the nation’s 7th president and the namesake of this community is a 1,120-acre National Historic Landmark that welcomes more than 230,000 visitors annually. Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage offers tours daily, giving visitors a glimpse into the life and times of the 19th-century South, including Jackson’s rise to fame and his ownership of slaves on the expansive plantation. With ongoing research, interpretation of the site continues to tell the stories of this property and the people who lived on it. The Hermitage Mansion, originally built in 1821, remains the centerpiece of the property, and with the energy of multiple generations of the Jackson family, the enslaved and a constant flow of visitors, the rooms act as portals into the daily lives of those in the Jacksonian Era. Special events and education activities happen year-round, and private event rentals are available. The Museum Store offers a wide variety of souvenirs, gifts, and made-in-Tennessee products.

Belle Air Mansion

This historic Greek Revival-style home has been restored into an elegant bed and breakfast on a sprawling six-acre property in Donelson. Built in 1832 by Joseph Clay and Elizabeth Harding, Belle Air Mansion stands as a true testament to the grand houses of the affluent Southern landowners of the early 19th century. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Weddings and family or business retreats can be booked as well.

Buchanan Log House

This early Donelson frontier home was hand-hewn from extinct hardwood logs in 1807 by James Buchanan, an early Nashville pioneer. The Buchanan grounds are the home of four buildings, all 1800s log construction: The main Buchanan Log House and Gazebo; The Addison Museum, which was the log home of Buchanan’s son, offering a glimpse of frontier life in the 1840s; the Buchanan History Center; and the Smokehouse. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is entrusted to the care of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities. Special events happen throughout the year, and the historical venue is available for private events.

Cleveland Hall

Stockley Donelson, the grandson of Nashville founder John Donelson, nephew of Rachel Jackson and close confidant of Andrew Jackson, commissioned a two-story, five-bay country house in 1839 that would become known as Cleveland Hall. He and his wife lived there until his death in 1888. Several acres still surround the historic house. It is privately owned by the Donelson family and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Clover Bottom Mansion

First claimed in 1780 by John Donelson, co-founder of Nashville, Clover Bottom Mansion was built in 1859 and served as the centerpiece of the 1,500-acre plantation, located in what is now Hermitage. The Italianate-style mansion bares a strong similarity to nearby Two Rivers Mansion, which was built around the same time. It now serves as the home of the Tennessee Historical Commission. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The grounds are open to the public during daytime hours.

Stone Hall and EverSong

Stone Hall was built in 1918 for Dempsey Weaver Cantrell and his wife, Nora Johnson Cantrell. Nora was a poet and was named Poet Laureate of the Tennessee Women’s Clubs in 1939. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as important examples of Colonial Revival architecture. Built on 12 acres, the property also includes the charming three-story log cabin named EverSong, which represents a different version of the Colonial Revival—the log house. Situated on the bluff of the Stones River, the cabin was moved from Williamson County and served as both a guest house for Stone Hall and the haven for Nora Cantrell’s poetry writing. Located in Hermitage, the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County and Greenways of Nashville acquired both Stone Hall and EverSong for use as a park and trailhead, venue for public and private events, and cultural programs.

Tulip Grove Mansion

Across Lebanon Pike from Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage stands Tulip Grove Mansion, considered one of the best surviving examples of Greek Revival-style antebellum homes in Tennessee. It was originally built between 1834 and 1836 for Andrew Jackson Donelson, Rachel Jackson’s nephew and President Jackson’s private secretary. After Andrew Donelson sold the estate in 1858 and moved to Memphis, Tulip Grove passed through a series of owners. In 1914, the Buntin family purchased the property and made additions to house modern conveniences. The family sold the farmland surrounding the mansion in the 1960s but sold the mansion and 60 acres to what is now the Andrew Jackson Foundation. Admission to Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage includes access to the exterior of Tulip Grove. The mansion can be rented for private events.

Two Rivers Mansion and 1802 House at Two Rivers Mansion

One of the last elaborate antebellum country homes built in the Nashville area, Two Rivers Mansion is an Italianate house in Donelson with a striking resemblance to nearby Clover Bottom Mansion. The adjacent 1802 House is a Federal-style brick home where the McGavock family lived during the construction of Two Rivers, which was built in 1859 for David H. McGavock, a cousin to the McGavock family who owned the Carnton plantation in Franklin, Tennessee. The McGavock family lived in the mansion until 1965, when the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County purchased it. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guided tours are offered seasonally. Private tours and school field trips are available upon request, and the properties can be rented for private events.

THE FUTURE IS TAKING FLIGHT

Airport expansion vital to growing community

Keeping pace with the rapid growth of the Nashville metropolitan area is essential for Nashville International Airport as it takes flight into the future.

With massive local growth over the past decade and similar growth possible, if not likely, over the next 10 years, it takes a great deal of strategic planning to produce clear visibility and maybe even a strong tailwind in the ascent into the days and years to come.

“We have actually doubled in size in the last 10 years,” says Lisa Lankford, BNA’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer.

It is a matter of not just keeping pace with an ever-expanding market for the airport, but addressing the needs of MIddle Tennessee for the foreseeable future and beyond.

Sure, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has just completed a $1.5 billion expansion, including a new International Arrivals facility with six international gates, a new grand lobby, a pedestrian bridge, and an eight-gate satellite concourse. But there’s no rest for the weary and worried in an ever-growing city and environs.

That’s where New Horizon I and II come in.

These programs will address both airside and landside facilities. Under these plans, the airport’s Concourse A will be rebuilt as a 16-gate, state-of-the-art concourse. That, in turn, will require extending the new Concourse D by five gates, and expanding the Concourse A ramp, as well as improvements to BNA’s baggage-handling system and central ramp. Under New Horizon II, roadways, a consolidated rental car center complex, or Con RAC, and surface parking are in the planning stages. Also in the planning stages for the long-term future: a new terminal, Terminal II.

The changes are not only desired, but they’re vital to a growing market, Lankford stresses, emphasizing that planning for the future is a central tenet under the leadership of Doug Kreulen, president and chief executive officer for the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority.

“If you ask our state or our local economic development groups, what’s the No. 1 thing when companies ask when they are looking at moving to an area, they’re going to ask about your school system, your workforce, and your airport,” says Lankford.

Kreulen, Lankford, and the folks at Nashville International Airport are planning ahead and executing those plans to ensure that that last answer is the correct one.

Other Avenues of Transportation

Earthbound Nashvillians, too, have numerous alternatives to driving for getting around the area through the WeGo Public Transit system.

By rail, the WeGo Star moves thousands of commuters and other travelers between Lebanon and the downtown Riverfront Station, with stops in Donelson, Hermitage, Mt. Juliet, Martha, and Hamilton Springs along the way.

WeGo Public Transit also offers bus options throughout the city, with buses available to take passengers from the train station to their ultimate destination.

And more will be on the way, as Nashville voters approved a half-penny (0.5%) sales tax surcharge to create a dedicated funding source for transportation and mobility projects included in the transportation improvement program, Choose How You Move. The program seeks to address improvements ranging from train and bus service to sidewalks and traffic signal upgrades, and the means of financing those enhancements. Students in Donelson Hermitage can choose own paths of learning

Preparing students for the future, for careers, and roles in the larger community is one of the top jobs of the area’s McGavock High School. And through the school-system-wide Academies of Nashville program, the school is getting the job done.

“Since the inception of the Academies program, we’ve seen a significant increase in graduation rates, as well as post-secondary education,” said Dr. Berthena Nabaa-McKinney, vice chair and District 4 representative for the Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) board.

Participation in the academies, at McGavock High School, and throughout MNPS starts at the outset with Freshman Academy. There, “Believe, Strive, Conquer!” is the motto, and the goal is to assist with the academic and personal challenges inherent in the transition to high school.

“We’re taking those groups of students in ninth grade, really supporting them and showing them, the different academies that are offered within their school and oftentimes across the city,” Dr. Nabaa-McKinney explained.

Then, at the start of 10th grade, students choose an academy that will take them through to graduation. At McGavock High School, those academies are: the Academy of Aviation & Transportation; The Academy of Digital Design & Communication; the Aegis Sciences Corp. Academy of Life Science & Law; and the Gaylord Opryland Academy of Hospitality & USCCU Academy of Business and Finance.

The academies prepare students not just for secondary education but for post-high school careers.

“Every high school student, no matter where they are on the academic side … they are going into some type of academy to support them,” Dr. Nabaa-McKinney said. “And through that model, they still have opportunities to take advanced coursework, college- and career-ready coursework, earn industry certifications, and in many cases come out with a job, either through our internship or externship programs. And when they graduate, to go straight into their field.”

In the healthcare field, for instance, McGavock High School students can earn certified nurse’s assistant certification or a certified medical assistant certification.

“A lot of times,” Dr. Nabaa-McKinney said, “they’re working with business partners who may hire them while they’re in high school and then hire them full time once they graduate.”

MNPS is not in this alone, however, as the schools work with community organizations and the business community to provide opportunities for students and to ensure that the program is meeting the needs of the local business community.

“We have partnerships with Amazon and Oracle, the Tennessee Titans, Bridgestone, some of the top corporations in our area,” said Dr. Nabaa-McKinney. “We also have partnerships with our community colleges and our universities that offer scholarships when students graduate to relieve the financial stress that many families face in going to college. We have business partners that work to hire students while they’re in their junior, senior year, as well as post-graduation.”

Lest one think that students are committing to an entire life path in 10th grade, though, there is a bit of wiggle room. By 11th grade, students can switch academies and move into something that more snugly fits their evolving interests. A student in the healthcare field, for instance, may discover that the sight of blood is a deal breaker.

“This,” said Dr. Nabaa-McKinney, “gives you the opportunity to be able to explore an interest that’s best for you. … It has helped kids focus on what their career or college career pathway may be.”

Thus, McGavock High School students are learning about career paths, about different industries, and, perhaps most crucially, about themselves.

SCHOOL DAYS

In addition to McGavock High School and other MNPS schools, the area offers a wide variety of private schools, such as Holy Rosary Catholic Academy, serving pre-K to 8th graders, and Donelson Christian Academy, K-12th grade. There are also charter schools, along with the Tennessee School for the Blind here in Donelson Hermitage.

High school graduates may wish to pursue greater knowledge at a nearby college. There are numerous schools in the area from which to choose. Among the institutions of higher learning in the region are Remington College, Nashville State Community College, and Trevecca Nazarene University. Also in Nashville are Belmont University, Vanderbilt University, Lipscomb University, and Fisk University, all private, four-year institutions.

And if college is not for you, perhaps a trade school, such as Salon Professional Academy, will more closely suit your needs.

Expanding TriStar Summit Medical Center remains committed to excellence

The general well-being of an expanding major metropolitan area is tied to numerous factors, not least of which is the ability to provide health care services to a community experiencing a leaps-and-bounds-level rise in population.
