Dear Chamber Member,

Thank you for being or becoming a member of the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce. What a wonderful opportunity we have been given by being members of our Deer Park Chamber of Commerce. I hope you take advantage of its opportunities.

Networking is typically the best method of how we grow our businesses. Advertising has its place, but it is personal relationships that help build trust and confidence in their and our workmanship or product. The Chamber gives us opportunities to meet one another at Monthly Luncheons, Membership Breakfasts and After Hour Socials to build relationships and, perhaps, new friendships.

So how do we know when and where to meet other business owners or representatives? There are several methods to stay in tune with the latest happenings: First, the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce website: deerparkchamber.org. Here you may browse the general information or you may log in to access deeper information. Second, the weekly newsletters sent via email will keep you up to date on upcoming events and opportunities to network. I look forward to those as great reminders of things to put on my calendar. Third, the annual Membership Directory. Much like we used to have a “phone book”, we can access members that have goods or services we need. I can look up a business as the type I need or by their specific name. I personally would rather do business with someone who contributes to my community than just some name that comes up from a web search.

Chamber of Commerce membership gives you opportunities. Let me encourage you to utilize the opportunities from your Chamber membership. Grow your business and your contacts as you do so.

It brings me great pleasure to welcome you to Deer Park, “The Birthplace of Texas,” a vibrant and thriving city that I am proud to call home. Our community is renowned for its warm hospitality, rich culture and diverse population, making it a wonderful place to live, work and visit.

As your Mayor, I am committed to ensuring that Deer Park continues to grow and flourish in the years to come. We have a strong community focus, excellent schools and a wide range of recreational opportunities for people of all ages. Whether you enjoy hiking in one of our beautiful parks, attending an event at one of our top-notch facilities or exploring our historic attributes, there is something here for everyone.

Deer Park is a city that prides itself on community involvement and engagement. Our residents are passionate about improving the quality of life for everyone and we consistently work toward

achieving that goal.

The volunteer fire department, police department and emergency medical services in Deer Park are invaluable assets to the community. These dedicated professionals are not only highly skilled and proficient in their respective areas, but they also go above and beyond to ensure the safety of the people. Their steadfast commitment to serving the community is truly heroic.

The strong sense of pride we have for our city is evident in the way we come together to support each other. We are grateful for the opportunity to live in a community where people are willing to lend a helping hand and take an active role in making Deer Park a better place to live.

One of the things that makes Deer Park so special is our commitment to preserving our history and heritage. We have several historic sites and landmarks that tell the story of the State of Texas and our city’s founding. “BIRTHPLACE OF TEXAS”

• Trademark registration for the Birthplace of Texas was issued to Deer Park, Texas by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on January 2, 2007.

• In April 1836, Sam Houston and his men defeated the Mexican army under the leadership of General Santa Anna on the San Jacinto Battlefield. Following the battle, Sam Houston, David Burnett and the Texas Cabinet went to Dr. George Moffit Patrick’s cabin, located on the banks of Buffalo Bayou in present-day Deer Park. The Texas army encamped here after the battle, held cabinet meetings and drafted the initial treaty papers securing Texas’ independence from Mexico. Today, the City of Deer Park proudly displays a representation of Patrick’s Cabin at Heritage Park, located at 1410 Center Street, Deer Park, TX 77536.

• In 1935, the Texas Legislature created the Commission of Control for Texas Centennial Celebrations in honor of the 100th anniversary of Texas’ independence from Mexico. The state appropriated funds to promote significant historic events leading to the progress and growth of Texas, which included the placement of markers and monuments. In 1936 a Centennial marker was placed near the site of Dr. George Moffit Patrick’s cabin in Buffalo Bayou. In 1948 the marker was moved to a nearby site when Rohm and Hass built a plant at the location. In 2009 Dow Chemical purchased Rohm and Haas. Seven years later Dow contacted City of Deer Park staff and offered to move the marker near the historic representation of Patrick’s Cabin at Heritage Park. In 2017 the Texas Historical Commission granted permission to move the marker to its current location.

EDUCATION

Deer Park ISD

Deer Park ISD is a highly respected school district as they have received an accountability rating of an A and are also ranked in the top 100 for best school district out of more than 1,000 other Texas districts.

Deer Park ISD was founded in 1930 in the east Harris County community. Deer Park ISD is made up of 15 schools with an enrollment surpassing 12,800 students. Its jurisdiction spans the majority of Deer Park and parts of Pasadena, Lynchburg and Highlands. With a faculty of 870 teachers and 995 staff members, Deer Park ISD prides itself on being a dedicated teaching cohort. Deer Park ISD was ranked 35 out of more than 1,000 other districts on best places to teach in Texas.

The community, employees, students and parents, take exceptional pride in the district’s renowned Fine Arts and Career and Technical Education (CTE) initiatives, successful athletics and a child-centric instructional approach.

The Deer Park CTE Program not only equips students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed but also prepares them for their chosen career path. Students can pick from a variety of programs ranging from healthcare, technology, engineering, hospitality, agriculture and more. These programs include course internships, apprenticeships and Industry-Based Certifications, allowing students to graduate high school with certifications allowing them to go straight into the career field. Deer Park CTE Program helps students explore their options and discover potential career paths.

The district also has an incredible Deer Park Education Foundation. The Education Foundation awards teachers with Enrichment Grants to help provide them with additional funding to enhance learning opportunities for students. These grants help eliminate the out-of-pocket costs teachers often endure.

San Jacinto College

San Jacinto College was established in 1961. The institution spans five campuses, catering to approximately 41,000 students—both pursuing credit and non-credit courses—annually. The College offers an extensive array of over 200 degrees and certificates across eight primary areas of study. They are dedicated to preparing students for seamless transitions into four-year institutions or successful entry into the workforce.

San Jacinto College has been recognized nationwide by the Aspen Institute for Community College Excellence in 2023, 2021, 2019 and 2017. Out of more than 1,000 community colleges in the nation, San Jacinto College consistently continues to be recognized as a top 10 community college.

San Jacinto College has recently added the opportunity for students to not only obtain an associate degree from the college but also get a bachelor’s degree. Students now have opportunities to get bachelor’s degrees in 3 fields: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Applied Science in Education with an emphasis on early childhood education and Bachelor’s degree in information technology with an emphasis on cyber security.

Finally, there’s an incredible opportunity awaiting students at San Jacinto College. The Promise Program isn’t just a scholarship; it’s a gateway to a debt-free college experience. Designed for graduating seniors within the College taxing district, this scholarship covers in-district tuition fees and book expenses. What’s remarkable is its inclusivity: it’s accessible for up to three years or until the student completes their first associate degree, regardless of income or high school GPA. The only requirement is enrolling as a full-time student in San Jacinto College, taking at least 12 credit hours each semester starting from the fall term after high school graduation. This program opens doors to debt-free education, empowering students to pursue their academic aspirations without financial burdens holding them back.

2023 Small Business of the Year, Cox Commercial Construction:

Cox Commercial Construction has been a family-owned business for over 30+ years. Vice President, Doug Cox, and his wife Jamie are heavily involved in the Deer Park Chamber and within our community. If there is a Chamber event or ribbon cutting, you are very likely to see one of these two at the event, greeting guests and making them feel welcome. Cox Commercial Construction was quick to jump in and help where they could when the tornado hit Deer Park. They are truly proud to call Deer Park their home and are invested in helping the business community thrive.

2023 Large Business of the Year, Oxy Chem:

Oxy Chem Deer Park is an active business within our community. In 2023 alone, they participated in over 26 Chamber and Community events, such as Chamber functions, Deer Park Police Back the Blue, Deer Park Education Foundation, Deer Park Citizens Police Academy, City of Deer Park Parks & Rec events, and more! They provide job opportunities for many Deer Park residents. They recently celebrated their 75th anniversary and in February 2023 they accomplished 1 million safe work hours!

2023 Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Debbie Sorge:

Deer Park resident Debbie Sorge has attended many Chamber events and has been known to always lend a helping hand during events and even assist with clean up. For over 20 years, she has also been seen picking up trash on her daily walks so she can ensure the city she loves stays clean! Debbie was a regular substitute for Deer Park ISD for over 30 years and she also had 2 children graduate from there as well. Debbie is someone who truly loves Deer Park and does her part to make it a great place to live, dine, and do work in!

CHAMBER FOUNDATION

Leadership Deer Park

Leadership Deer Park is a civic leadership development program that aspires to bring together, connect and empower a pool of future leaders in the Deer Park area. Our Deer Park Leadership initiative presents an exceptional opportunity for both our members and local community residents to enhance their leadership skills while contributing positively to the community.

Each year, a select group of individuals will be chosen to participate in a 9-month program that convenes once per month. Through lectures, discussion groups, on-site visits, simulations and other leadership development activities, participants will gain a thorough understanding of the inner workings of the community. The Leadership Deer Park program equips participants with enhanced leadership skills, builds valuable relationships and prepares them for future challenges.

Junior Ambassadors

The Junior Ambassador Program consists of 30 exceptional Deer Park High School juniors and seniors who are in the Career & Technical Education (CTE) program. Junior Ambassadors volunteer at Chamber events, learn about different career opportunities, hear from leaders in the Deer Park Community, mentorship opportunities and plan an event.

The Junior Ambassadors are generously sponsored by Shell Deer Park Chemicals. This support allows the Junior Ambassadors to organize and conduct a Financial and Career Expo, the Game of Life, for all Deer Park High School Freshman students to attend. The Expo aims to equip these students with essential financial knowledge and to expand their awareness of career opportunities.

At this event, freshmen engage in interactive experiences by first selecting a career from various business booths. Once they select a career, they are given a monthly salary. They must then navigate through a series of budgeting stations such as housing, transportation, insurance, groceries and more. This hands-on approach allows students to effectively manage their finances, while also gaining knowledge of everyday expenses. The goal is for students to stay within their monthly budget. A portion of the proceeds from the Game of Life go back to our Junior Ambassadors in the form of scholarships.
