THE FACES OF DAYTON BUSINESS

Get to know Marty Grunder

Marty was a landscaping prodigy. Raised on a Bellbrook farm that “grew everything,” he found his dad’s “bare root” plants fascinating and loved planting live Christmas trees. By age twelve, his mom was dropping him at Scarff’s nursery to “walk rows and memorize plants.” Afterwards, he’d lobby to buy plants for landscape experiments.

At Alter High, Marty found his voice calling basketball games. Dreams of sportscasting replaced playing baseball, which he “wasn’t good at.” While his engineer father and English teacher mother both worked, they “didn’t have a lot.” To earn college money, he bought a used mower. By graduation, he’d grossed $50,000 and unearthed “part of his identity:” entrepreneurship.

In 1984, Marty took blooming business acumen to University of Dayton, his mother’s alma mater. With his dad’s help, he built a trailer, and the business thrived. His grades didn’t. “What are you doing?” his mother demanded. Undeterred, he got a $10,000 loan for a dump truck, eliciting “Oh my goodness!’” from Mom. Grossing ten times his high school best, he then graduated with a BS in business administration, debt free.

Grunder Landscaping Company. Three decades hence, Marty stretches with the team while talking company values. He explains “whys,” like planting a tree means shade for years” and “doing it right” means not losing money replacing plantings. “Everyone should know company goals and how to reach them,” he says. “And people besides the owner need to learn to ‘drive the bus.’”

Doubling in size since 2019, Marty’s award-winning company thrives on core beliefs. “Mission is our moral fiber, what holds our culture together,” he says. It makes Grunder “different—” a feature of success. “Quality, leadership, teamwork, and profitability aren’t just words: We hire to them. We fire to them,” he declares, insisting all team members are important. “Everyone should feel appreciated. It’s easy to say thank you and reinforce what people do right.” Crediting his mother with his “appreciation for “little things,” he says, “Mom always watched out for us and made sure everyone was included.”

Since he wouldn’t want family “riding on bald tires,” Marty’s team is treated likewise. By extension, trucks are washed bi-monthly, benefits are generous, and bathrooms cleaned—by Marty. “I want people to want to come to work and want to go home.” Believing “A happy home leads to a happy business and vice versa,” he segues into proud talk about wife, Lisa, a teacher, and their four children.

In The 9 Super Simple Steps to Entrepreneurial Success, Marty writes, “I’ve made a small fortune…delivering what we promised, paying attention to details, being polite, following up, and showing up on time.” Rooted in innate predispositions, these values were nurtured by parents and management luminaries, like Clay Mathile. “People thrive in a safe environment, doing work they see as valuable, where their voices mean something,” he says. There are non-negotiables: “Take care of each other, take care of customers, and don’t do drugs. Sexual, religious and political orientations are your business.”

Marty remains CEO of the seventy-member team, but COO Seth Pflum runs Grunder Landscaping, which installs everything from sensory and therapeutic gardens to backyard retreats. “We basically make things look, smell, and feel better,” Marty quips. As for that voice found in high school, with 800 professional talks under his belt, he heads The Grow Group, a coaching and education subsidiary.

Unsurprisingly, How to Win Friends and Influence People tops Marty’s booklist, and he’s writing a “best seller” on leadership. And a US president once visited his home—staying three hours.

Soin Award: 15 years of encouraging innovation, supporting quality startups

The Soin Award for Innovation keys in on entrepreneurs who have new, innovative ideas – just as the name says. But for those who’ve won it, the award is synonymous with several other important attributes – validation, recognition, community support.

“As a small company, you’re always cash-challenged, so that investment we got from the award was definitely beneficial,” said Kevin Hartke, whose company was Mound Laser and Photonics when it won in 2008. “But probably the bigger benefit was the recognition we received as a local successful entrepreneurial business … It gives you visibility.”

Scott Reeve, who was president of 2010 winner Composite Advantage, added, “The fact that the chamber and the Soin committee check this stuff out and come out and say, ‘We feel good about this company.’ That helps.”

The Soin Award marked its 15th year in 2022. The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce established the award in 2007 to help mark the chamber’s 100th anniversary.

“We were looking for a way to honor the (region’s) history of innovation and to support tomorrow’s innovative companies,” said Chris Kershner, chamber president and CEO. “It was a way of honoring our past, but also looking forward to say how can we continue to support this ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurism that we have in this area.”

Kershner said a lack of capital is always a challenge for small businesses and the chamber wanted the award to come with a cash prize and other benefits. “Thanks to Soin family, we were able to secure the annual capital needed to support this award. Then, the chamber was able to use our visibility and our reach to provide marketing support and PR recognition,” he said.

Winners receive $25,000 and promotional help that includes a video produced by Cox Ohio Media Group Ohio. Additional sponsors include The Dayton Daily News and Sedgwick.

“For us as a small business, $25,000 is a big deal,” said Tim DeHart, president of Triple A Pro Services of Franklin, a septic and grease trap cleaning company that won in 2014. “We were able to better our equipment … and do some things we would not have been able to do without that money.”

“Having that video was amazing for us … helping us get new markets,” said Nate Brinkman, director of operations and contracts at CommuterAds, the 2011 winner. “We still use it.”

The award is underwritten by and named for the Soin family and Raj Soin, a philanthropist and successful entrepreneur. In 1984, Soin and his wife, Indu, started Modern Technologies Corp., an engineering and technical services company, and grew it into a $400 million business, before selling it. Soin then founded Soin LLC., a wide-ranging holding and investment company.

Vishal Soin, son of Raj and Indu and president of Soin LLC., said, “The entrepreneurial ecosystem of the Dayton region continues to push the boundaries of innovation and we are pleased to support the Chamber and the next generation of companies and leaders.”

“The Soin family was extremely generous,” Kershner added. “The Soin family as a company really embraces the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurism in the Dayton region … (The award) not only aligned with their values as a family but aligned with a culture of the Dayton region that helped them grow their business.”

Scott Koorndyk, president of the Entrepreneur Center and a member of the Soin Award selection committee, said winning the award helps companies fully connect with Dayton’s startup ecosystem.

“It puts these companies in a small collection of winners,” he said. “They’re learning a lot, they’re engaged with a lot of the partners, and it’s also a step into this very dynamic ecosystem that we find in the Dayton region for startups.”

Several Soin winners noted the region’s supportive environment.

“Everybody wants to see everybody succeed,” said Nick Ripplinger, president of Battle Sight Technologies, the 2018 winner. “I really believe that the Soin Award helped us kind of get our message out and kind of introduce us to the community and we were super graciously received.”

Art Fritts, president and CEO of 2012 winner NanoSperse, said, “I tell everyone how important the Dayton community has been to this business.”

Fritts said companies such as his, which works in advanced materials for the aerospace industry, don’t offer investors the quick turnaround that a software startup might.

“It’s a much longer-term, harder investment to do. And this community has supported businesses like NanoSperse over and extended prion of time,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons there are so many small, aerospace-related companies around, because that ecosystem is here, and the Soin Award is just a part of that ecosystem.”

Sixteen local companies have won the Soin Award from 2007 through 2022.

Fourteen of them are still viable operations, including one that is restructuring. Not surprisingly, some have undergone significant changes.

For instance, both Reeve’s and Hartke’s businesses have become part of larger companies and been renamed. But both men continue to play key roles their companies and, in each case, the Dayton region is home to the operations that made up the original business.

“We’ve got a lot of success stories,” Kershner said.

Two that have ceased operations – Webcore Technologies and Iya Technologies – were among the first three Soin winners. But ceasing operations is not always the end of the story.

“Webcore as a technology got spun into other companies,” Koorndyk said. “The underlying technology still exists … It’s a positive story.”

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Katampke, founder of Iya Technologies, aspires to restart his business, which won in 2009 and went on a “sabbatical” in 2014.

Katampke, who holds a doctorate in chemistry and is now at Central State University, developed a new process for transferring ink to various surfaces, including fabrics. He was selling products at Wal-Mart when the 2011 tsunami in Japan disrupted the supply chain and made his raw materials very hard to get.

He also encountered issues more typical for a startup. He said had trouble finding manufacturers for his process and that he had to take on roles – such as overseeing production – that were outside of his expertise.

“My biggest thing was growing so fast,” Katampke said. “Within six months, we had two product lines in Wal-Mart. The success was good but the infrastructure to support this framework was not there yet.”

Kershner said the Soin Award success rate defies national statistics for startups. And, he said, the award is doing exactly what the chamber hoped, helping innovative companies scale up and “advance to the next level of business success.”

“Entrepreneurism is always risky, but we have a culture in the Dayton aera of standing behind and supporting entrepreneurs so that they can grow,” Kershner said.

Spring safety

Here we are in 2023 and the first day of spring has come and gone. This is a great time for us all to leave the cold weather behind and look forward to warmer weather. The hazards we face in the winter may be different than the hazards we face in the spring. If your employees are working outside this spring, they should be made aware of those dangers. Below is a list of work your employees may be performing outdoors, the hazards they may face, and tips on staying safe.

1.  Be sure to wear gloves, safety goggles/glasses, sturdy shoes, pants, and any other necessary PPE.

2.  Follow all the manufacturer’s operation and safety guidelines and do not take short cuts. The guidelines are designed for your safety.

3.  Perform a maintenance tune up on your equipment such as oil/fuel change, sparkplug, filter, etc.

4.  Ensure your blades on equipment are kept sharp as this will make the job easier and lower the chances of getting injured.

5.  Remember to protect your hearing. Outdoor power equipment can damage your hearing.

1.  When using a ladder, inspect it for damage and be sure to use the right ladder for the job.

2.  Extension ladders should extend at least 3 feet above the working platform or roof.

3.  Always maintain a three-point contact and if you need to carry tools, use a tool belt.

4.  Scaffolding must be built per the manufacture’s specifications and by a competent person.

5.  Use the appropriate fall protection when working at heights.

6.  When removing material from the back of a truck, ensure the truck bed is organized to eliminate any trip hazards.

1.  Reduce the risk of sunburn and skin cancer by wearing long sleeves, a wide-brimmed hat and sunshades. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.

2.  Be sure to wear insect repellant to prevent insect bites.

3.  When using chemicals, be sure to follow the manufacture’s recommendations. Heed all safety warnings!!!

4.  Keep an eye on the thermometer and take precautions if it gets too hot. Don’t forget to drink water or hydrating liquids.

5.  Learn the warning signs of heat-related illnesses and share them with others. These include symptoms like headache, dizziness, rapid pulse, nausea and confusion.

Working outside as the weather warms up can be beneficial, mentally and physically. The warm sun, cool breeze and new blossoms are just a few benefits. But we must remember there are some hidden hazards. Be sure to take the appropriate precautions, as this will make working outdoors safer and more enjoyable!

Proposal to Ban Noncompete Agreements is Illegal and Out of Line

On January 5, 2023, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in Washington D.C. submitted a proposal to ban all employer sponsored noncompete agreements and January 18th, this proposal was officially registered on the U.S. Federal Register.

This issue has exposed two major flaws in the perceived role of the FTC. 1) A ban on noncompete agreements by the FTC would stifle innovation, put intellectual property at risk and would be detrimental to business operations. 2) This action is illegal and the FTC does not have this competition rulemaking authority to implement this rule.

This blanket proposal by the FTC is out of line and would have a devastating impact on business operations in the Dayton area and the nation. The business community has used noncompete agreements for decades to protect intellectual property, trade secrets and operations strategies. These agreements have been fairly used by employers and voluntarily agreed to by employees as one of many conditions of employment. Businesses should not be made to feel guilty or wrong for protecting their operations, investments and intellectual property. The business community makes significant investments into innovation and product creation; they must have confidence that their proprietary information will be kept confidential. If we lose this ability, the impact to fair market competition and business operations will be beyond imagination. Dayton area businesses have paved the way for innovation and creativity since the turn of the 20th century and this culture is still thriving today. This innovative culture has been a result of a supportive local ecosystem and government policies that encourage these risk-taking ventures. If this rule passes it will have a significant and adverse impact on Dayton area companies that must have this freedom to be successful.

Moreover, the FTC overreach with this proposed rule is illegal. Proponents of this noncompete proposal would also like to see future rulemaking action by the FTC which could have an even greater impact on business operations. The FTC most certainly expects this rule to be challenged in the courts, and if the court agrees with them, then there will be future authority given for this absurd overreach to continue. Bottom line: The FTC does not have this rulemaking authority and if the proponents want to legally have this issue considered, then that is why we have a bipartisan Congress with the authority and the process to review and debate the issue.
