Great things are happening here!

We are rural and proud of it! We would like to welcome you to our hometown, Colfax Washington.

Colfax is the perfect blend of small town America with a progressive mindset focused on a supportive and engaged community.

Colfax, one of the oldest towns on the Palouse,was founded on the confluences of the North and South Forks of the Palouse River on land claimed in July of 1870 by James A. Perkins and Thomas J. Smith. A saw mill was built a year later and the development of Colfax began.

Named in honor of Schuler Colfax, vice president during President Grant’s first term (1869-1873), Colfax serves as the county seat of Whitman County.

The early settlers learned the surrounding hills and the deep rich soils were ideal for growing wheat, which led to agriculture becoming our leading industry, which continues today. Colfax is in the heart of the Palouse, a distinct geographic region in southeastern Washington, called the Columbia Plateau.The unique rolling hills or loess hills make the Palouse one of the most photogenic areas in the world and are the basis for our outstanding agriculture.

Whitman County is responsible for about 25 percent of all of Washington State’s wheat production according to the Washington Wheat foundation. Other staple crops in this area are barley, dry peas, garbanzos, canola and lentils.

The city of Colfax celebrated its official founding and sesquicentennial, 150 years, in July of 2022.

Free fun family event with almost all downtown merchants opening their doors to kids in costume for a safe evening event.

Thursday, November 9 - Sunday, November 11, 2023 in Downtown Colfax. Kick off to the Holiday season of shopping with downtown merchants banding together to put on their holiday displays, specials and discounts for this fun event.

Colfax

You will find the town of Colfax is a warm and welcoming small town. We are proud of our historic buildings, and lovely county courthouse. We also can boast of a
bustling downtown core with unique, locally owned businesses you will find
nowhere else. There is a wonderful energy in Colfax you need to experience,
by walking our historic downtown corridor, eating at a local restaurant,
or enjoying a day of shopping. Visit surrounding universities, or attend
a sporting event without fighting the crowds. Plan a photography
tour, historic building tour or find all the murals in Colfax.

Colfax Golf Course

Colfax Golf Course is a beautiful oasis along the Palouse river on the North side of town. This public course offers 9-holes, par 35 and a new Clubhouse with on-duty pro, snacks and beverages. The Codger Pole

This unique, 65-foot chainsaw sculpture commemorates a local football game played in 1988, a grudge match from a 1938 game that Colfax lost.  The sculpture is carved from 5 separate cedar logs and captures the spirit of the games played 50 years apart on the same field, with the same players. The Colfax Bulldogs lost the original game in 1938 between Saint John and Colfax but reclaimed victory in 1988. The players were carved on totems by artist Jonathan LaBenne of Idyllwild, California. It is said, many of the players stood on scaffolding while the artists worked on their likenesses.

The Perkins House Museum

The Perkins House Museum, the lovely Victorian mansion of James Perkins, lovingly restored and maintained by volunteers. This nationally registered historical site was built in 1886 by Colfax Founder James A. Perkins. Directly behind the home is the small cabin the family of 6 lived in upon their arrival to the area. The home is owned by the Whitman County Historical Society and is open for docent guided tours on the weekends. It is also available for private functions and weddings. Whitman County Library Colfax and The Libey Gallery at The Center

The de facto heart of our community is our amazing library, which serves our rural town in countless ways, please visit their website to see all they offer. whitcolib.org.

The Libey Gallery at the Bettie Steiger Enrichment Center, is physically attached to the Library and provides our community with a lovely home for resident artists, a meeting center, a technology center and is the home of the Colfax Chamber of Commerce. Stop in to see the rotating art exhibits.

Saint Ignatius Hospital

Visit the historic and spooky Saint Ignatius Hospital for a Historical tour or a Haunted Ghost tour. This amazing building is being restored to preserve its history and serve the community. These tours bring Ghost hunters and history buffs from around the world to Colfax year-round. colfaxhauntedhospital.com

Colfax Murals

Colfax is home to several murals, including 2 separate installations of swimming fish. Bonus points if you can find the ‘crack art’- tiny paintings scattered throughout town, by various local artists, sponsored by the Colfax Arts Council. Besides the Codger pole there are two other unusual sculptures hidden in town. On Main St you will find a carved car and driver and on Mill Street will find a walking man. Photography

Colfax is in the heart of one of the best areas of the world for photography. The unique topography, changing light, wildlife, and bucolic beauty are unparalleled. Every season holds its own distinctive qualities. Please photograph safely and always ask permission before entering private land, even if it seems in the middle of nowhere, it's likely farm ground.

The Colfax Palouse River trail

This is a peaceful 5-mile round trip trail that quickly gets you out in nature just a few minutes from downtown.
This flat, gravel trail will give you a special perspective on life along the river. Colfax Trail — Washington Trails Association (wta.org)

The Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail

This 250 mile trail is part of a cross-state trail system with its current terminus in nearby Tekoa, Washington just north of Colfax. Cyclists, hikers and horse drawn wagons enjoy this cross-state trail year-round. Pre-registration with the park office at 509-337-6457 is required to use the section between Beverly and the Idaho border or go to parks.wa.gov. The Bill Chipman Trail

Located in Pullman, this paved non-motorized trail is a low rail to trail project connecting Pullman Moscow where it becomes the Latah Trail out to Troy, Idaho.

Moscow Mountain

Enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and snowshoeing, in this nearby protected area. New bike trails are in the works.

Steptoe Butte State Park

Located 16 miles northeast of Colfax, the Butte stands 3,612 feet high and offers unparalleled views of the rolling hills below. Known by photographers from all over the world. Day use only. Steptoe Butte State Park Heritage Site | Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission

Kamiak Butte County Park

The peak of Kamiak Butte rises 3,360 ft high offering fabulous views of the Palouse in all directions. Hiking trails, shaded picnic areas, and limited camping are available. Kamiak Butte — Washington Trails Association (wta.org)

Klemgard County Park

Ten miles south of Colfax, this park caters to large group activities. Sand volleyball, horseshoe pits, a multipurpose field and hiking trails offer a variety of family fun.

Wawawai County Park

On the Snake River, 16 miles south of Pullman there are limited campsites, picnic tables and firepits and restrooms.

Boyer Park and Marina on the Snake River

Just 22 miles southwest of Colfax this 80-acre park offers a full service marina on the Snake River.

Palouse Falls State Park

Home to Washington’s state waterfall! Just 90 minutes from Colfax. You will see an impressive narrow cataract with a 200-foot drop to a churning bowl below. From there, the current moves swiftly, through a winding gorge of columnar basalt, to its southern end at the mighty Snake River. Carved more than 13,000 years ago, Palouse Falls is among the last active waterfalls on the Ice Age Floods path. There are several very nice parks to relax or play in.

Eells Park

Eells Park on Island Street is home to a historical fountain donated to the city by a prominent family in remembrance of their daughter. The fountain was renovated in 2022 for the town’s 150 year celebration. This is a little gem of a park with a play structure, benches and a bike rack.

McDonald Recreation Park and Trail

This facility was completed in 2001 and offers five ball fields, including soccer, baseball and softball complexes and is suitable for tournament play. A concession facility is onsite and surrounding the fields is a nice, paved trail for jogging, walking or bike riding.

Henry Little League Park

The original field was donated in 1950 by Bo and Mary Henry and dedicated to his father Dr. Daniel W Henry. Dr. Henry came from Pennsylvania in 1900 and practiced medicine in nearby Endicott until 1941. The park is located on Cedar Street.

Schmuck Park

One of the city’s largest parks, its lovely, shaded location near the Palouse river, is ideal for large events and dog walks alike. There are picnic facilities, a play structure and plenty of parking.

Colfax Skate Park

Colfax Skate Park at Schmuck Park is a valued part of our community for all ages.

Colfax Swimming Pool

Colfax Swimming Pool is a municipal pool operated during the summer months, The pool is a cool oasis for all ages. Stop by to see one of the town's murals on the side of the pool house.
