Preparing Students
Superintendent Dr. Shawn Ryan said Clarkston Community Schools (CCS) aims “to nurture individuals
into engaged citizens, preparing students for their next steps.” With the district’s
multi-faceted approach that focuses on student learning and curriculum, overall well-being, providing
different opportunities for career exploration and maintaining safe and secure schools, CCS students are
well prepared for whichever path they take once they leave school, whether that leads them toward
college, the Armed Forces, a trade school or directly into the workforce.
A native of Big Rapids, MI, Dr. Ryan, whose four children have graduated or currently attend CCS, has
been with the district for nearly 30 years, including the last six-plus in his current role. During his
three decades with the district as a guest teacher, student teacher, science teacher, assistant
principal, principal, deputy superintendent, interim superintendent and now superintendent, Dr. Ryan has
been proud to be part of a “remarkable Clarkston community” that is “filled with a
deep commitment to engaging and supporting students in their learning and well-being.”
"I’m especially proud of our efforts to incorporate the Whole Child and Multi-Tiered Systems
of Support initiatives, which allow us to focus on meeting the needs of all students," said Dr.
Ryan. "This includes implementing the most effective classroom practices and providing additional
staff and resources, enhancing instructional technology and adding literacy and math coaches in every
building. These efforts, and more, equip our students with the right tools for academic and social
success.”
Thanks to the passage of a $197.5 million bond in 2022, CCS can fund a number of projects throughout
the district, which serves approximately 6,700 students at seven elementary schools, one middle school,
one junior high, a traditional high school, an alternative high school and an early childhood center. A
significant amount of the funds from the 2022 bond will go toward the construction of a new junior high
school. Groundbreaking for the school occurred in May 2024, and the four-phase construction project is
scheduled for completion in 2028. Once finished, the new junior high – located on the same site as
the existing junior high, which was built in 1959 with an addition in 1961 – will be a safe and
secure facility with “new, larger learning spaces, more natural light, a two-story gym with a
walking track and lots of areas for students to collaborate with others,” Dr. Ryan said. “We
are genuinely grateful to our community – their continued support is allowing us to construct this
beautiful state-of-the-art junior high school for our students and the community."
Dr. Ryan said the performing arts center and the construction tech area from the existing junior high
will remain, as those areas were recently updated and the district wants to preserve those investments.
A number of projects throughout the district are also being funded by the 2022 bond, including new
HVAC/air conditioning systems for all elementary schools and Sashabaw Middle School and specific safety
and building projects at each school.

At Northern Roots Wellness & Coaching, owner Lisa Humphrey has developed “a holistic, healing
approach to well-being” that includes life coaching, personal training and nutrition coaching.
“It’s not just being focused on what you’re eating,” said Humphrey, also
co-owner, nutrition coach and personal trainer at Studio 8 Fitness in Waterford. “It’s also
about learning how you’re moving your body and adjusting your mindset to help break bad habits,
whether that’s eating poorly, not going to the gym. It all starts with mindset.”
Humphrey is currently accepting new clients (men make up 50% of her client base) for all her programs.
Her online group and individual life coaching program guides clients through the four pillars of The 180
Method – a comprehensive program that helps clients “elevate themselves to new heights by
making a complete 180-degree shift.”
Northern Roots’ group classes meet once per week for 12 weeks and include clients from all over
the U.S. to “allow for different perspectives,” Humphrey said. Individual coaching is a
six-month program.

Evexia Wellness Spa
First opened in 2019 just a month before the mandatory COVID-19 shutdown, Evexia Wellness Spa has come
a long way since guests first walked through the doors of this 3,500-square-foot spa.
“It was a rough start,” said Ida Pesce, Evexia Wellness Spa founder and owner, “but
God showed up. He made it happen.”
Today, Evexia Wellness Spa offers a range of services, including “massage, facial, float, bio
mat, laser hair removal, body contouring, IPL Photofacial, vibration therapy, salt therapy and foot
soaks.” The Evexia Package, a three-hour session that includes a 60-minute facial, 60-minute
massage, 30-minute foot soak and access to The Wellness Lounge – ‘a calming and relaxing
environment filled with comfortable soft seating and a low lighting environment” – is one of
the most popular services “and a great deal,” Pesce said.

Ellie Mental Health
Just making the first call to schedule a visit with a mental health professional can be a difficult
step, so at Ellie Mental Health – Clarkston, the practice’s Ellie Match program can help
ease that process and help you “get the care you deserve.”
“When someone calls in looking for services, I try to learn about them and why they’re
seeking services so I can help align them with one of our therapists,” said Lauren Ruben, clinic
director at Ellie Mental Health – Clarkston. “A big issue is that people go see a therapist
and it was a negative experience for them, and they say, ‘therapy is not for me.’ We try to
avoid that happening.”
Ellie Mental Health – Clarkson, one of more than 250 Ellie franchise locations nationwide, opened
in August 2023 and is owned by Gerald Gomes. His team of clinicians provides a variety of mental health
therapy services for clients ages 3 and up, including individual and couples therapy, trauma-informed

Wellness & IV Lounge
Since 2021, Wellness & IV Lounge has offered vitamin and nutrient injections, custom IV drips,
bloodwork, genetic pathway testing and other specialized services like microneedling with exosomes at
its Clarkston location.
The lounge accepts HSA but does not accept insurance.
“The biggest challenge for us has been to educate people that IVs aren’t just for sick
people,” said Wellness & IV Lounge owner, Edna Stephens, a former teacher and publishing company

Creating Community in Clarkston
he Clarkston shopping district is not large, but the impact it has on the community is. That definitely
is the case for two local businesses with addresses on Main Street – Essence on Main and Twenty
One Clarkston.
Essence on Main has been a mainstay in historic downtown Clarkston since 2007 when owner Emma
Davis-Donnay’s parents opened the gourmet specialty market. Davis-Donnay, who previously worked in
the auto industry, started helping out at Essence on Main in 2010 during nights and weekends and started
managing it full time in 2019. Davis-Donnay is proud to continue what her parents started, as she offers
“local and specialty goods, beer and wine, homemade soups, sandwiches and salads, and a cool array
of locally made wares.”
“One of the changes I made when I took over from my parents was creating a rental space in the
basement,” said Davis-Donnay, a 2023 Young Professional of the Year nominee by the Clarkston
Chamber of Commerce.
This once underutilized storage space, now called The Honeycomb, has its own access off the alley
behind Essence on Main and has played host to album launch parties, concerts, yoga and a variety of

At The Integrated Life Company, company founder Brandon Still – a self-described
“solopreneur” – has helped to create a network of coworking centers where folks from
small towns can build community and more.
“Pretty much anybody who is one of our spaces could work from home, but one of the reasons why
they’re not is they want to be around other people – and maybe that’s to receive
business support or just have a cup of coffee with,” said Still, who founded Main Street MI
Coworking in Clarkston, now known as Twenty-One. “Coworking spaces also give you a place to go
where you can separate your work life from your family life. They also offer flexibility – with
most open 24/7, so if someone wants to design their day around other priorities in their life, they can
do that.”
Still launched The Integrated Life Company venture in late 2022 – he said it “organically
came to be” through his work owning and operating other coworking spaces.
At Integrated Life, Still consults with community groups, including chambers of Commerce, DDAs,
business owners and other local organizations throughout Michigan, Ohio and Indiana “to
create and execute plans to establish an entrepreneurial presence in their towns through the
launching of boutique coworking spaces.”

Residential Living
Clarkston, MI, is a town rich in history, and its historic residences are a testament to its enduring
charm. Nestled within the City of the Village of Clarkston, many of these homes date back to the
mid-19th century, reflecting the town’s growth and prosperity during that period.
Clarkston’s historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is home to many
of these well-preserved buildings, offering a glimpse into the architectural styles and lifestyles of
the past.
The history of Clarkston's residences begins in the early 1800s when settlers first arrived in the
area. Many of the town’s early inhabitants were farmers and entrepreneurs, who established homes

residences, resulting in a blend of architectural styles, most notably Greek Revival, Victorian, and

PINE KNOB MUSIC THEATRE
Pine Knob Music Theatre, a renowned outdoor concert venue nestled in Clarkston, offers a unique

legendary musical performances since 1972. Its intimate atmosphere and picturesque setting make Pine

CONCERTS IN THE PARK
A beloved summer tradition, the Concerts in the Park series takes place in Depot Park, featuring free
live music on select evenings in June and July. This event showcases local talent and offers a
family-friendly atmosphere with food concessions benefiting local non-profits as well as face painting
and ice cream from Cook’s Farm Dairy. The concerts have been bringing joy to the community for
more than 40 years.
ART IN THE VILLAGE
Art in the Village, hosted by the Clarkston Historical Society each September, transforms Depot Park in
Clarkston into an open-air gallery. This annual event showcases the work of local and regional artists,

local vendors. It's a celebration of creativity and community that draws visitors from near and far.
TASTE OF CLARKSTON
Taste of Clarkston is an annual culinary event that turns downtown streets into a haven for food
lovers. Featuring over 20 local restaurants, the event invites thousands of attendees to sample a wide
range of cuisines while enjoying live entertainment. Co-hosted by the Clarkston Area Chamber of
Commerce, Independence Township and the City of the Village of Clarkston, Taste of Clarkston is a
vibrant showcase of the town’s rich culinary offerings.
HOLIDAY MARKET
The Holiday Market at Brady Lodge, located in Bay Court Park, is a cherished November event that marks
the start of the holiday season. Featuring local vendors with handmade crafts, seasonal treats and
activities like horse-drawn wagon rides and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, the market offers a
festive and cozy atmosphere. Co-hosted by the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce, it’s a
heartwarming way to engage with the community and get into the holiday spirit.
CLARKSTON FAMILY FARM
Clarkston Family Farm is a community gem dedicated to educating the next generation about
sustainability and healthy living. The farm offers a variety of workshops, events and programs for all
ages, from preschool to retirees. Visitors can also shop at the farm’s market, which features
locally-grown produce and artisan goods. It’s a place for families to gather, learn and experience
the joy of nature.
GOLF
For golf enthusiasts, Clarkston offers several premier courses, including Pine Knob Golf Course and The
Fountains Golf & Banquet. Each course offers its unique blend of challenge and beauty, providing scenic
landscapes and a variety of golfing experiences for players of all levels. Another member of the
Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce north on I75 in Grand Blanc, MI is Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club
historically known for the Buick Open Golf Tournament and now hosting The Ally Challenge Presented by
