Regional Overview & History
Located in the heart of north-central Missouri, Chillicothe is a thriving regional hub
known for its agricultural heritage, historic charm and strong sense of community. As the county seat of
Livingston County and home to around 9,500 residents, Chillicothe has long served as a center for
commerce, culture and connection within the region. Located at the intersection of US Highways 36 & 65,
its location provides convenient access to larger metropolitan areas such as Kansas City, St. Joseph and
Columbia, while still maintaining a distinctly rural, close-knit character.
Founded in 1837 along the Grand River, Chillicothe quickly grew into a key destination for settlers
drawn by fertile farmland and river access. Its name, derived from a Shawnee word meaning “big
town,” proved fitting as the city blossomed into a bustling trade center. The arrival of the
railroad in the mid-1800s further accelerated growth, making Chillicothe a vital supply and shipping
point for area farmers and merchants. Businesses flourished, public institutions took root and many of
the historic homes and commercial buildings constructed during this era still stand as lasting reminders
of the city’s early prosperity.
In 1928, Chillicothe made history again when Frank Bench’s Chillicothe Baking Company became the
first in the world to sell commercially sliced bread using Otto Rohwedder’s automatic
bread-slicing machine. This simple but revolutionary idea gave rise to a household standard and earned
Chillicothe its unique claim to fame as the “Home of Sliced Bread.” It’s a title the
community embraces with both pride and playfulness, and one that symbolizes the city’s enduring
spirit of innovation.
Today, Chillicothe continues to play a central role in the region, serving neighboring towns and
counties as a hub for health care, education and commerce. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local
economy, with family farms producing corn, soybeans, cattle and other staples that feed Missouri and
beyond. These operations are supported by a strong network of agri-businesses providing seed, equipment,
livestock services and grain handling, many of which are active members of the local Chamber of
Commerce. As agriculture evolves with modern practices and technologies, Chillicothe continues to
balance tradition with progress, ensuring its farming legacy thrives for future generations.

The Chillicothe R-II School District serves over 1,700 students across four campuses, including an
Early Learning Center with Chillicothe Elementary School, Chillicothe Middle School, Chillicothe High

dedicated staff and a commitment to academic excellence and community partnerships. Chillicothe High

Bishop Hogan Memorial School

Grand River Technical School
Located in Chillicothe and part of the public school system, Grand River Technical School (GRTS) offers

North Central Missouri College
