Chamber Welcome
Welcome home. The Champaign County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to provide you with this unique
publication. We hope that you find this publication to be a helpful resource as you settle into this new
chapter of life in Champaign County.
Our rich sense of history, which still influences Champaign County, has destined our community for
success. As the University of Illinois’ home, our community has attracted scientists, senators,
teachers, tradespeople, Nobel Prize winners and many other notables. Many stay for a lifetime, enriching
the community; some receive or contribute to our world-class community before moving on to influence
different communities. What happens in our community influences and changes the world.
Champaign County is 998 square miles of urban and agricultural living. Champaign, Urbana and Savoy,
which make up the commercial hub of the county and its largest population center, are surrounded by
other thriving communities, including Rantoul, Fisher, Mahomet, St. Joseph, Tolono, Sidney and Philo,
Illinois.
Bolstered by the outlying areas that claim some of the world’s richest farmland, the county
offers unique agriculture and related business opportunities. Our vibrant business community encourages
and embraces new commerce and industry, and Champaign County is a center for technology and
innovation.
Champaign County has many quality-of-life amenities to offer our culturally diverse residents and

The Chamber’s Welcome Service
Welcome to the community. Moving to a new town and beginning a new phase of life can be an exciting and
interesting experience, while at times being a bit overwhelming.
To better introduce newcomers to the area, the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce offers a Community
Welcome Service program designed to welcome individuals and families to the wonderful place so many call
home.
On behalf of the Chamber, newcomer households can receive a gift tote bag within a few weeks of their
arrival. Each bag is filled with community information, coupons, free gifts and information sponsored by
sponsoring businesses. To receive your free Welcome Kit, please fill out the form on page 9 and bring it
to the Chamber office.
The Champaign County Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based organization that represents more than
69,000 employees of area businesses that have joined together to advance the general welfare and
prosperity of Champaign County. Through its many active committees, the Chamber helps to promote a
positive business climate in Champaign County.
As an independent association, the Chamber provides a strong voice on current issues and direction for
the future of the county. In addition, active volunteer committees work with the Chamber staff to
improve the business climate and the community at large.
The Champaign County Chamber of Commerce is a primary resource for businesses. Members have many

Education
The Champaign and Urbana public school districts offer programs designed for a diverse population of
students from a wide variety of cultures and languages.
Champaign Unit 4
Champaign Unit 4 School District is a large unit school district serving more than 10,000 students
(pre-K to young adult) who live in Champaign, Savoy and Bondville. More than 2,000 dedicated teachers,
administrators and support personnel, including some of the brightest, award-winning educators are
employed by the district. Unit 4 represents the diversity of our world, fosters positive learning
environments to prepare students for college and careers, and empowers students to succeed on any path
they choose.
Our vision is to empower each learner to thrive in a diverse and changing world. Our mission is to
positively transform learning and life outcomes for students through educational justice, equity and
excellence.
Unit 4 has two dual language programs (French and Spanish), three AVID National Demonstration schools
and expanded early childhood programming.
We are a truly diverse school district. Seventy-two languages are spoken by our families, and our
multi-language learners speak 48 languages. The community shows strong support toward the school system
through vigorous volunteer efforts. Last fall approximately 1,500 volunteers donated more than 34,000
hours of their time to our students.

Urbana District 116
Urbana School District serves more than 4,000 students in grades pre-K through 12th grade. We have a
state-of-the-art Early Childhood Center; five elementary schools, including a Multilingual School
offering one of the state’s best Dual Language programs; a middle school; a high school; an
alternative program; and an adult
learning center.
Urbana School District #116 works to immerse students in culturally rich learning environments to
prepare them for college, career or trade school. More than 14 percent of the students in USD #116 are
English language learners, representing over 50 countries and 46 languages.
USD #116 staff work hard to maximize high-quality instruction and teaching and learning.
Urbana School District continues to find innovative ways to ensure our students’ academic,

Christie Clinic
Christie Clinic is one of the largest physician-owned, multi-specialty group medical practices in

OSF HealthCare Heart of Mary Medical Center
OSF HealthCare is a 16-hospital health system serving Illinois and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. As
part of OSF HealthCare, OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana served more than 43,000 patients last
year.
OSF HealthCare Heart of Mary Medical Center, a 210-bed comprehensive health care facility, has been
recognized for its treatment of acute cardiac events, heart failure, stroke and total knee and hip
replacement, in addition to being home to the area’s only inpatient adult behavioral health
unit.
The hospital was founded in 1919 by the Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary. When the hospital became
part of OSF HealthCare in 2018, The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis renamed the hospital
to honor the legacy of the founders.
Today, the team of nearly 700 Mission Partners provides state-of-the-art therapeutic, diagnostic, medical, surgical and support services in the hospital and through the OSF Medical Group of primary care and specialist physicians. ■
Recreation
Champaign County Forest Preserve District
Spanning over 4,000 acres, the Champaign County Forest Preserve District manages seven unique forest
preserves, each offering its own outdoor experience. Cast a line at Homer Lake, or gaze at the stars at
Middle Fork River Forest Preserve—Illinois’ only International Dark Sky Park and campground.
Ride the scenic Kickapoo Rail Trail from Urbana to St. Joseph and Ogden, or explore the diverse
landscapes of Lake of the Woods, River Bend, Sangamon River and Heron View preserves in Mahomet.
Dedicated to protecting natural and cultural resources, the Forest Preserves also inspires
environmental learning through year-round programs. The Museum of the Grand Prairie and Homer Lake
Interpretive Center host events like Walk with a Naturalist, Take Me Fishing, Prairie
Stories, and Bats at the Bridge. Families can enjoy free summer concerts and kids
ages 3–12 can join fun, educational summer camps.
Champaign Park District
Champaign Park District has over 60 parks across Champaign that include great amenities like trails,
playgrounds, sports fields, athletic courts, lakes, natural areas and more. With over a dozen
recreational facilities, they offer plenty of opportunities to play and stay healthy. Seasonal
facilities like Sholem Aquatic Center and Prairie Farm are open in the summer and tennis enthusiasts can
enjoy tennis in the winter months at Dodds Tennis Center. Enjoy the arts at Springer Cultural Center and
the historic Virginia Theatre, both owned and operated by the Champaign Park District.
Special events and programs happen year round and include park concerts, movies in the park and at the
Virginia Theatre, community festivals, sports programming, fitness classes and more! Champaign Urbana
Special Recreation (a partnership with Urbana Park District) offers programs for residents with
disabilities and inclusion services for all programs.
Krannert Center for the Performing Arts
With five indoor stages and an outdoor amphitheatre, Krannert Center is east-central Illinois’
home for world-class music, theatre and dance from some of the greatest artists on the planet.
Internationally acclaimed symphony orchestras, jazz legends and theatre and dance ensembles encompassing
the traditional and the contemporary are part of every season. Krannert Center also serves as the
educational and creative hub of the University of Illinois’ Theatre, Dance and Lyric Theatre
departments, and is home to many School of Music performances each year. Enjoy free parking, $10 tickets
for students, lunch at our Intermezzo café and free performances at Stage 5 in their lobby. Several

Urbana Park District
The Urbana Park District has been serving its community since 1907. From aquatic centers to varied
playgrounds for children, residents of all ages can find a variety of activities to enjoy within any of
its many parks and facilities, which include a dog park, natural areas and an aquatic center. Residents
can practice their backhand strokes on any of the tennis courts in Blair Park or rent a paddleboat at
Crystal Lake Park. The Urbana Park District holds a number of youth and adult programs throughout the
year, including summer camps, sports and fitness classes and nature programs. Together with the
Champaign Park District, the Urbana Park District offers programs for residents with disabilities
through Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation. In 2025 Urbana Park District opened its brand-new, $16
million Health & Wellness Center. Be sure to check it out at 2002 E. Washington Street in Urbana!
Savoy Recreation Center
The Savoy Recreation Center is a vibrant hub for community activities, offering something for everyone. Kids can enjoy exciting summer camps, while adults and little ones alike can learn a new sport through beginner pickleball clinics. Community events like the Daddy Daughter Dance, St. Patrick’s Day Festival, Mother Son Nerf War and a Noon Year’s Eve celebration bring families and friends together throughout the year. For those looking to stay active, we offer open gym time for both basketball and pickleball as well as workout rooms and equipment. Our facility is also available to rent for parties, gatherings and events, with options including parks, pavilions and indoor spaces. Outdoors, visitors can take advantage of our clean, well-kept parks and playgrounds, perfect for getting some fresh air, enjoying nature and spending time with family. Whether you’re participating in a program, attending a community celebration or simply spending time outside, the Savoy Rec Center is the perfect place to connect, play and grow all year long. ■
Transportation
Champaign County features air, rail, bus and charter transportation for residents and visitors with
flights from Willard Airport at the University of Illinois, daily train service via Amtrak and the
Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District’s bus routes covering the metro area. For private travel,
Peoria Charter offers local and nationwide service.
Willard Airport
The University of Illinois-Willard Airport accommodates commercial and private air services. Often
referred to by its FAA designation CMI, Willard is one of two commercial airports in the United States
operated by an educational institution.
American Airlines offers non-stop service from Willard to Chicago O’Hare and Dallas Fort Worth.
The airport also is home to Flightstar, a private jet service.
Willard served 120,529 airline passengers in 2022 and generates about 750 full-time equivalent employee
positions for the area.
Champaign-Urbana MTD
The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, or MTD, serves the Champaign Urbana area, including the
University of Illinois.
University students, faculty and staff ride MTD free by showing their I-Cards, and veterans ride
fare-free with a veteran pass. The system also offers passes for people on Medicare and those with
disabilities.
For many riders, the fare is $1 for a one-way trip, with small children riding free with a paying
adult. The system offers passes for $20 a month and $60 a year. MTD also provides transportation for
many students in Champaign and Urbana middle and high schools.
Peoria Charter
Peoria Charter Coach offers daily service between Champaign-Urbana and the Chicagoland suburbs,
O’Hare Airport, Midway Airport, and downtown Chicago.
They offer nationwide custom charter services for weddings, conventions, corporate events, school
groups, military travel, shuttles, and recreational tours, etc.
They also serve the University of Illinois and other Illinois Universities and colleges, along with
public school districts.
Amtrak
Amtrak has daily service from the Illinois Terminal in Champaign. The facility includes a waiting room
and connections with bus services. Amtrak trains also stop in the town of Rantoul, where there is a
covered waiting platform.
Trains stopping in Champaign run north to Chicago and south to Memphis and New Orleans. ■

New residents can find just about everything they are looking for in Champaign County. The county has a
blend of both large chain stores and smaller specialty stores that offer a wide selection of foods,
furniture, clothing and other accessories.
Local shops help support the community by being the largest employers in the area and reducing the
environmental pollution. Champaign County emphasizes supporting small businesses where business owners
take pride in creating goods that will create a long-lasting impression whether it’s crafting
personalized furniture or comfortable trendy clothing.
A few of these locally-owned stores are lined along Main Street in Downtown Champaign and in Downtown
Urbana. Along Main Street in Downtown Champaign, shoppers can find clothing at secondhand shops and
men’s clothing. Shoppers searching for the next compelling book can check out the bookstore while
musicians can find new equipment at the music store. In Downtown Urbana, shoppers can find shoes,
spiritual beads, trendy women’s clothing, accessories for bicycles and entertainment supplies.
New residents can find Black-owned and women-owned shops such as a custom graphics shop offering
murals, as well as shops offering flavored popcorn. Shoppers can match their aesthetic taste with
vintage clothing and furniture. Other stores give residents a chance to indulge in classic treats with a
twist that the Midwest offers such as cheeses, oils, spices and wines.
Market Place Shopping Center
Champaign County residents can check off everything on their list when they visit the Market Place
Shopping Center. The 109 stores in the shopping center are located on one level and are divided by their
services making it easy to find the ideal store even if entering from the Neil Street, Town Center
Boulevard or Market Street entrance. Shoppers will likely pass by children’s clothing stores,
electronics, entertainment, health, beauty, home, housewares, women’s clothing, men’s
clothing, sports, fitness, accessories and professional services. Shoppers can dine at any of the nine
restaurants in the shopping center, visit the 600-seat food court or take a spin on the beautiful
antique carousel.
Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana
Looking for a gift that’s Urbana made? Made in Urbana is one of the several entertainment and art shops that can be found inside the historic Lincoln Square Mall recognized as one of the first enclosed malls in the United States. Besides stores, the mall provides an abundance of health and wellness options, along with other professional services such as financial assistance, children’s therapy, worship centers, legal help, adoption support services and social support services. Shoppers can purchase fresh-baked gluten-free sweets, taste a refreshing glass of kombucha and try home-cooked meals or Italian cuisine at the four eateries located in the mall. Those who are looking to stock up on necessities can visit the Common Ground Food Co-Op in the mall. Throughout 2024, the mall hosted various events such as Read Across America, The Urbana Train Show, Boneyard Arts Market, Plant & Herb Sale and Illini Vintage Market. ■
Our Communities
Fisher
Family recreational facilities, an annual horse show, the Lucky Foot Festival and Ranae Helpingstine
Memorial Car Show highlight the family-friendly atmosphere in this town of 1,983 residents.
Located 15 miles north of Champaign and 115 miles south of Chicago, the community is served by the
Fisher Community Unit School District. There’s an enrollment of 601 students in the K-6, junior
high and senior high schools.
Annual events include the Lucky Foot Festival, first organized in 2017 by the Fisher Area Business
Association. The daylong event includes music, a car show and activities for people of all ages.
Dating back to 1941, the Fisher Community Fair and Horse Show is a week-long event that attracts
thousands of people each July.
Community amenities include Mary Lammie Park, featuring two baseball diamonds, two soccer fields, a
playground and pavilion; three horse stables; and the Fisher High School Fitness Center/Weight Room,
which is free to residents.
Mahomet
The village of 10,070 residents prides itself on school systems that attract families to the area,
along with a calendar of events and a variety of church, civic and school organizations.
Mahomet, sitting about 10 miles northwest of Champaign at the intersection of Interstate 74 and
Illinois 47, features an outstanding library; two forest preserves, including the Lakes of the Woods
Golf Course; and 10 park locations that offer programs for soccer, basketball, T-ball, baseball,
softball and flag football. There’s a variety of other activities for people of all ages.
The village boasts the Mahomet-Seymour school system, operating two elementary schools, plus and junior
and senior high schools.
Top annual attractions include the Mahomet Music Festival, held annually on Main Street downtown on the
last Friday and Saturday of August. Besides a variety of musical acts, the event offers a parade, food,
vendors, carnival rides and beer gardens.
Another event is the Mahomet Soda Fest, featuring the chance to sample more than 100 soda flavors plus
entertainment, activities for kids, food and vendors.
Mahomet strives to live up to its mission statement: “Provide for the needs of today and prepare
for the demands of tomorrow while remaining mindful and respectful of the past.”
Sidney
A village of 1,146 people, Sidney is located 22 miles southeast of Champaign.
Savoy
This tree-lined village of 8,847 residents is home to the University of Illinois Institute of
Aviation.
Incorporated in 1956, the village earned the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA
designation.
Savoy has a half-dozen parks that offer facilities for tennis, baseball, volleyball and soccer. There
are miles of walking paths, plus an eight-acre lake.
Tolono
Located 110 miles south of Chicago, the village of Tolono has a population of 3,451. Tolono is
home to two public schools, Unity High School and Unity West Elementary.
Rantoul
Recreational opportunities abound in this village of 11,825 residents, located about 120 miles south of
Chicago along Interstate 57. There are nine parks that offer a fishing lake, playgrounds, picnic areas,
ball diamonds and handicap-accessible facilities.
The 14,000-square-foot Hap Parker Aquatics Center features a zero-depth entry pool, two water slides, a
pavilion, sand volleyball court and concession stand.
For campers, the Prairie Pines Campground has 95 lots with water, sewage and electric hookups, plus
restrooms, showers and laundry facilities.
The Forum Fitness Center is equipped with a weight room, gym, racquetball courts, cardio exercise
machines and locker rooms. Fitness classes are offered.
The city is served by Rantoul Township High School, plus four K-5 schools and one for grades 6-8.
Champaign
A city that is home to one of America’s major universities, Champaign offers an endless array of
opportunities, from sports to the arts, theater, music and recreation.
Located 135 miles south of Chicago, Champaign has a population of 90,522. The University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign boasts an undergraduate enrollment of 34,500.
Champaign’s cultural centers include the Virginia Theatre, which hosts events ranging from ballet
to country music, and a library offering programs for readers of all ages and interests.
There are dozens of parks that feature miles of walking and biking trails, splash pads, ball fields, a
tennis center and fishing opportunities.
Visitors to the vibrant downtown area discover boutiques located in historic buildings, consignment
shops and a variety of restaurants and bars.
The city’s calendar of events ranges from street festivals to concerts, sports and
family-oriented activities.
Urbana
Whether your favorite activity is tennis, cricket, fishing or archery – or dozens of other
offerings – Urbana has
a park for you.
The city of 39,302 residents, designated a Tree City USA for its more than 100,000 trees, is the home
of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with an enrollment of 34,500.
Urbana’s 20 parks feature an aquatic center, archery, sledding, disc golf, playgrounds, ball
fields, basketball courts, tennis, trails and picnic areas. The
League of American Bicyclists has named the city a Bicycle Friendly Community.
Market at the Square is a popular feature each May through October, with produce, plants, food, and
arts and crafts for sale. There’s also a vibrant dining scene, which earned Midwest Living
magazine’s designation of Greatest Midwest Food Town.
Urbana also offers a number of museums and exhibits for those interested in history, art, nature,
science and other topics.
St. Joseph
The village of St. Joseph is a charming bedroom community that offers a high quality life.
The village offers many local amenities to shop, eat, and play and is conveniently located near the
Champaign-Urbana metropolitan area.
St. Joseph is only a short 10-15 minute drive to the University of Illinois, Willard Airport, numerous health care facilities and many other desirable amenities. ■
