Carthage Chamber of Commerce

On behalf of the Carthage Chamber of Commerce, I welcome you to our community. Carthage was founded in 1842 and serves as the County seat of Jasper County. A community at the crossroads of Route 66 and Jefferson Highway, our community is rich in history, art, and culture. The iconic courthouse enriches our beautiful downtown square and is home to Missouri’s fourth most photographed structure. While the community burned to the ground during the American Civil War, it was reconstructed and has evolved to become the beautiful town you see today.

Incorporated in 1932, the Carthage Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization that works with local area businesses, community leaders, and citizens to improve the overall business climate for our members and the quality of life in the community. We proudly serve over 400 Chamber members from non-profits, small businesses, major corporations, individuals, and retirees.

Our mission is to improve our members’ overall business and the Carthage Community’s quality of life. Our partnerships with local companies, city and county leaders, nonprofits, local schools, and universities are vital to our city, county, and regional growth. We pride ourselves on the economic impact we consistently make within these areas to continue to move the city forward.

It is an exciting time to be a Carthage Chamber of Commerce member. We are constantly creating new networking and marketing opportunities that are a benefit to our businesses and to all of those who attend. We have had much success with our events, including our annual banquet, Carthage Area Young Professional, our women’s focus group called EmPOWERing Women in Business, our annual golf tournament, and all our major networking events that our members truly enjoy.

Our signature event is our Maple Leaf Festival®. This nine-day festival is over 50 years old and is a staple to the entire Missouri region. Over 65,000 visitors come together the third week in October to celebrate the beautiful fall foliage from the maple leaf trees, this, is the reason why the City of Carthage is known as America’s Maple Leaf City.

Our programs, events, publications, and sponsorships provide unique opportunities to showcase member businesses to the community. This online directory is another excellent service that the Carthage Chamber of Commerce provides to the local community and a resource for all our businesses.

History

The Carthage Chamber of Commerce is a private, nonprofit organization devoted to enhancing and supporting new and existing businesses in the community.

Since its incorporation in 1932, the Chamber has served as a mainstay for its members, uniting hundreds of businesses, professional firms, and dozens of business-minded individuals to create a unified voice working to improve business and build a stronger community. The Carthage Chamber of Commerce is also the City’s information center for visitors and tourists who are stopping in to take in the rich history of the community.

To further the chamber’s mission and vision, many events, networking opportunities, and professional development classes are offered to all Chamber Members to help them better their careers in their workplace. As a Carthage Chamber of Commerce member, you are part of an organization where you and your business always come first. We work hard to help create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and promote the quality of life for the residents and the companies we serve.

The Maple Leaf Festival® is not just an event; it’s a testament to the spirit of our community. It began in 1966 as a marching band competition, and since then, volunteers have come together to organize an event that celebrates the beauty of maple-leaf trees’ fall foliage. The City of Carthage, known as America’s Maple Leaf City, hosts one of the region’s biggest festivals, drawing over 65,000 visitors in October to pay homage to this historic festival.

Held the 3rd week in October, this festival hosts daily events for an entire week, starting with Oktoberfest the Saturday before and ending with the biggest parade in Southwest Missouri. This nearly 2-mile parade begins at 9 am and encompasses the beautiful Historic Carthage Square, traveling down Grand Ave. and ending at the Carthage Jr. High School.

The square is a hub of excitement, filled with a diverse range of activities. There’s something for everyone from arts & crafts, food vendors, live entertainment, a quilt show, activities for kids, a petting zoo, and more. A carnival full of rides and entertainment for all ages, a Night of Praise, walking tours, and other festivities for all ages fill the week. The Maple Leaf Festival® volunteers, the Carthage Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Carthage Welcome you to America’s Maple Leaf City this October.

History

Carthage Residents and Visitors Celebrate the Mingling of Art and History

Carthage residents and visitors can take a journey into both the town’s past and the creative heart of its residents.

For a taste of Carthage’s past, you can visit the Phelps house, a preserved Victorian Era residential style home located at 1146 Grand Avenue. The house was originally built by prominent lawyer, philanthropist, and legislator Colonel William Phelps in 1895 as a home for his family. It was subsequently sold and used for a school by the Church of St. Ann’s in 1959. By 1988, the house was abandoned and deteriorating, so Carthage Historic Preservation stepped in.

“The house was in a state of disrepair,” said Carthage Historical Preservation President Van Bennett. “So we bought the house and fixed it up. We refurbished everything as best we could. We try to find the balance between historical preservation and usability.”

The house is now rented out for a wide variety of events.

“Weddings, meetings, wine tastings, class reunions,” said Bennett. “We haven’t had too many problems with people tearing things up, most of the people who rent it respect the historical nature.”

Carthage Historical Preservation also engages in advocacy, does research, and helps people get ideas on how to preserve properties. They also hold workshops for people looking to get a hands-on experience in historic preservation. For example, rebuilding windows the way it was done in the 19th century.

For more of a modern take in a historic home setting, you can head over to artCentral located at 1110 East Thirteenth Street in the Hyde House. ArtCentral is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping young and emerging artists. As part of their mission to support and promote the arts, they offer classes, studio space, a summer camp, galleries, and retail space for artists.

The various galleries offer a platform for their 200 members to display their work and visitors to enjoy.

“The house itself is a gallery, upstairs and downstairs. Each room is a gallery,” said Board Member Cheryl Church. “In the Bob Tommey Gallery, we display members’ work. In the Sandy Higgins Gallery, we rotate out which artist we display. And downstairs is a gallery where we bring in outside artists to display.” Tommey and Higgins are both founders of ArtCentral.

The building also hosts a holiday boutique selling items created by members, as well as a silent auction to raise money for the organization.

“The holiday boutique has various wares our members have made,” said Church. “You can buy a scarf made on a loom, handmade unique items, paintings, pottery, glass ornaments, macrame ornaments, and more.”

For the next generation, there is artCamp every summer. For two weeks in July, students ages 8-14 take classes in a variety of mediums.

“The kids in art camp are motivated to do fantastic work, and I can teach projects that take three to four hours rather than the 50 minute periods I’m limited to as a school teacher,” said Alexandra Burnside, ArtCentral’s President of the Board of Directors. The camp has attracted some interesting artists to teach the students, including master oil painter Andrew Batcheller teaching class for an entire day, an alpaca farmer leading felting projects that she’s harvested from her alpacas, and cowboys who demonstrated how to make horseshoes from metal.

The organization has about 200 members from the area.

“There is a limited amount of art space around the region, so people who want to get in our gallery may want to join,” said Burnside. “We get a lot of members around art camp time. If you want to be a teacher, you have to be a member.”

In the heart a rural landscape lies a rare site of health care excellence - Mercy Hospital Carthage. As a critical access hospital, its significance to the community cannot be overstated. Serving as the primary health care provider in our area, Mercy Carthage stands as a vital resource, offering an array of services that surpass the expectations of a typical small hospital.

One of the hallmarks of Mercy Carthage is its comprehensive suite of specialty departments, catering to a diverse range of medical needs. Patients benefit from access to specialty care including Rheumatology, Neurology, Pain Management, and Sleep Medicine. This extensive roster of services ensures that individuals facing complex health challenges can receive expert care close to home.

In addition to these specialized departments, Mercy Carthage proudly hosts a Pulmonology, Pediatric, Orthopedic, Women’s Health, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, and Podiatry Clinics. These offerings reflect the hospital’s commitment to providing holistic care, addressing the unique needs of the community.

The hospital offers General Surgery to include mini-gastric bypass surgeries and the TIF procedure to treat acid reflux endoscopically. These services further solidifying its status as a comprehensive health care provider.

Beyond specialty care, Mercy Carthage boasts an extensive Therapy Services department, encompassing both adult and pediatric services. Therapy services include Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies. The Therapy department was able to expand early 2024 to include Aquatic Therapy as it unveiled a groundbreaking addition to its facilities - an above ground aquatic therapy unit, one of only three in the state of Missouri. This expansion of services not only underscores the hospital’s commitment to innovation but also represents a significant milestone in enhancing rehabilitation options for patients recovering from various injuries and conditions.

Mercy Hospital Carthage is more than just a medical facility; it is a lifeline of care woven into the fabric of our community. Its dedication to excellence and its diverse range of services ensure that residents receive the highest standard of care. As we look to the future, we can rest assured knowing that Mercy Carthage will continue to be a beacon of health and healing for generations to come.

ACCESS Family Care Medical & Dental

Residents who need a helping hand can also visit ACCESS Family Care Medical & Dental. The Federally Qualified Health Center provides preventative care for people who can’t afford treatment or don’t have insurance.

“The idea is to provide medical care at a reduced cost to the community,” said Steve Douglas, Director of Marketing & Public Relations. “If you have good preventative care, you save taxpayer dollars on the back end because people don’t need as much care.”

In 2024, ACCESS will extend its services in Carthage. The center will expand by adding a second dentist, medical, behavioral, and health services. They are in the process of renovating a 30,000 square foot building for their headquarters.

“There is (a) huge need in Carthage,” said Douglas. “From an economic development perspective, we will help businesses save money by reducing days lost for illness and travel for medical visits.

Carthage’s Economic Outlook Brightens
with CEDC’s Strategic Initiatives

All signs point to Carthage being on the cusp of a remarkable economic transformation, and the efforts of the Carthage Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) are helping to turn ideas into dollars.

“My sole job is to grow Carthage,” said Jeff Meredith, the CEDC’s CEO as of 2023. “And that equals more retail, more industry, more jobs and more housing. When the economy grows, then everyone else’s opportunities within that economy also grow.”

The current primary focus of the CEDC, Meredith said, is the creation of an industrial park that will establish Carthage as a hub for businesses from various industries. While completion of the project is still years away, Meredith said the CEDC is close to closing on a $5 million piece of land at Exit 50 on I-49 near Mercy Hospital. Funding for that purchase and the expected development comes from a combination of federal and state grants, city funds and money from the Carthage Water & Electric Plant.

The CEDC has been active in Carthage for over 30 years, and it is starting on some great projects.

Having a presence, Meredith said, helps local players better realize growth opportunities. For example, he said that many employers aren’t always aware of the federal and state funding options available to incentivize growth. His job is to facilitate growth by connecting existing companies to dollars and by recruiting new businesses to town. The CEDC operates as a private-public 501c3 partnership.

CEDC Collaborates With Carthage Chamber for Greater Effect

Meredith said that he views his and the CEDC’s role as addressing the big-picture, macro economic needs of Carthage while the Carthage Chamber of Commerce works to support its member businesses. He said that Chamber President and CEO Julie Reams is a CEDC board of directors member and the CEDC is a Chamber member. That partnership provides a powerful one-two economic punch for the city.

“We collaborate and work well together,” Meredith said. “I see it as, I build the industrial park, I get a business there, and then once that occurs, they are going to join the Chamber and support the local community by being a part of the Chamber and all it offers a local business. And while they’re doing that, I’m going to go out and find another business to bring here.”

With the right pieces now in place, Meredith said Carthage faces unprecedented opportunities, though he did caution that advancements as large as the industrial park will not happen overnight.

“It’s a very large, slow-moving process that we’re going through,” he said. “But I think Carthage is ready to grow. There are a lot of great resources in this town. We’re focused on long-term growth, and I think there are good things ahead.”

Parks &

Recreation

Carthage Parks and Recreation is committed to offering Carthage citizens and the greater Carthage area a robust selection of recreational activities to suit a vast array of ages and interests. Carthage is home to approximately 200 acres, including seven unique parks across the community.

Central Park is one of our oldest and most popular parks. The park was landscaped by a famous landscape architect and still retains much of its beautiful Victorian serenity. It is also home to many community events including: Carthage Farmers Market, Food Truck Friday, and Sparkle in the Park to name a few. There is also a wading pool that is managed by the Fair Acres YMCA and open in the summer months.

Griggs Park is a popular park for recreational activities, hosting a skate park, pickleball court, and a brand new basketball court. It is the perfect place to be in motion and to engage in healthy competition. It is also home to a community garden, cared for by “Here 4 You,” which is sponsored by The Carthage Community Foundation.

Carter Park features a continuous asphalt trail throughout the park that is great for walking and emerging bike riders. It is also home to a brand new playground. Futsal, a game similar to soccer, is very popular in this park. This park is located next to the Battle of Carthage State Park, which was the location of the final battle here in Carthage during the Civil War.

Fair Acres was created for community recreation and team play and is home to baseball, softball, and soccer fields. There is also a one-mile walking path surrounding the fields. The pathway lights up with LED lights for visitors in the evening.

Freer Park is currently an undeveloped park with future plans to create a space for the surrounding neighborhood and the community.

Kellogg Lake Park is a beautiful place for people to enjoy a full day of outdoor activities. Located next to Spring River this park is full of opportunities for adventure. An activity many locals enjoy is fishing at the lake. Kids Fishing Day is a popular event held near the beginning of June each year. You also have the opportunity to kayak, discover nature in the outdoor classroom, pick up a game of disc golf or enjoy a picnic in the park. Kellogg Lake just received its very first playground, which will be used for generations to come.

Municipal Park is the largest park in Carthage. It houses the Carthage Municipal Pool, a brand new state of the art playground, skating rink, Carthage Saddle Club arena & rodeo grounds, Kiwanis Kiddieland, Jasper County Fairgrounds, Carl Lewton “Rock” Stadium, and is home to the Carthage Municipal Golf Course. The golf course is a challenging course and is situated on 120-acres. The course is a Par 71 with two ponds, two winding creeks, over 30 bunkers and narrow fairways. Tee times are available to book online at carthagegolfcourse.teesnap.net.

Charming Carthage

Carthage, Missouri, known as America’s Maple Leaf City welcomes travelers from all over the world. Carthage is a unique crossroad of history, art, and inspiration. With four historic districts and hundreds of buildings listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, Carthage has housed people and businesses with impressive tales that continue to intrigue travelers today. Civil War guerrillas, Wild West outlaws, and powerful business men and women have left their marks on area history. In modern times, the community celebrates heritage through art and faith to keep legends alive in Carthage.

These are just a hand-full of the many things to experience. Carthage, also is host to distinctive festivals & experiences. The Battle of Carthage Re-enactment is held every other year and brings in reenactors from all over the region to play out the July 5th, 1861 battle that took place here in Carthage. The Battle of Carthage was the very first land battle of the Civil War.

Marian Days hosted by the Congregation of the Mother Redeemer is a festival and a pilgrimage for Vietnamese American Roman Catholics celebrated since 1977 on a 28-acre campus. The celebration is held the first week in August each year in honor of the Virgin Mary and usually lasts four days. You will find the campus full of traditional Vietnamese food and Boba Tea. The experience is truly like walking into another country, experiencing culture, food and wonderful people.

Maple Leaf Festival® hosted by the Carthage Chamber of Commerce began in 1966 as a marching band competition and has since turned into a Carthage tradition of family gatherings and class reunions. Every year Carthage proudly welcomes thousands of visitors for this wonderful fall celebration. Activities are held the third week in October and end on the third Saturday with the largest parade in southwest Missouri, along with food vendors, arts and crafts, games and music for all to enjoy.

Christmas in Carthage is a magical experience with Sparkle in the Park, Downtown Carriage rides, Way of Salvation drive through light display, Precious Moments lighting ceremony and events, Christmas parade, Mayor’s tree lighting ceremony and unique shopping experiences.
