The Campbell Chamber is proud to partner with the City of Campbell, the Downtown Campbell Business Association, the many volunteer service groups, and other community leaders and organizations – all of whom share the vision of a dynamic and diverse city where people will want to live, work and play. Whether you are a resident or visitor, business owner or employee, Campbell has something for you!

Meet The Dude

The Campbell Water Tower Dude is the official goodwill Ambassador of the Campbell Chamber. The Dude was first introduced to the Campbell community in 2023 at a welcome reception attended by his mascot friends, Gigante from the San Jose Giants, and “Q” from the San Jose Earthquakes.

Prior to coming to life, the Dude’s image has been used to market all Chamber and Chamber Foundation events. The Dude will attend all Chamber events and many community activities to spread goodwill and remind everyone of the Dude’s purpose in life, which is to stay hydrated.

History of Campbell
Traces to Mid-1800s

In 1851, Benjamin Campbell, who had come wet in 1846, bought 160 acres of former Mission grazing land. He and his wife, Mary Campbell, like many other pioneers, built a farmhouse and began growing wheat and hay.

In 1878, as fruit orchards sprang up throughout the Valley, the Campbells granted the South Pacific Coast Railroad a right of way through their land for a $5 gold piece to help transport crops to outside markets. Roads were soon built to connect neighbors to the railroad line, and the Campbell home became the area’s first post office.

With the building of a small railroad depot in 1886, Campbell became the hub of activity. By 1887, the Campbells subdivided their land, and the first subdivision was recorded west of the railroad from Campbell Avenue to the spot where the Water Tower Plaza now stands.

The convenience of rail transport promoted major canneries and fruit-drying ventures to locate by the tracks. There were three major canneries in Campbell: the J.C. Ainsley Packing Co., the George E. Hyde Cannery and Perley Payne’s Orchard City Canning Co. Campbell’s fruit industry played a key role in the development of Santa Clara Valley into the Garden of the Heart’s Delight and the global epicenter for canned fruit.

The hundreds’ of workers employed in the fruit orchards and canneries demanded services in addition to grocery stores. As a result, the Bank of Campbell opened in 1895. The building still stands on the northeast corner of Campbell and Central avenues. Diagonally across the street, the 1911 bank building remains and is currently used as a restaurant. Other historic buildings are also in the downtown core.

With the development of business, a Board of Trade was established in 1989, eventually becoming the Campbell Chamber of Commerce in 1925. Through the years, the Chamber has sponsored a variety of activities such as parades and festivals, which call attention to the many positive aspects of living and doing business in the Campbell community.

One of Campbell’s most memorable events occurred in 1903, when President Theodore Roosevelt came to town to plant a redwood tree. He came at the request of Professor J. Fred Smith, the first principal of Campbell Union High School. While here, President Roosevelt planted a redwood tree on the school grounds. The tree was removed in 1963, and the Campbell Union High School closed its doors in 1980. The building now serves as a community center, providing a meeting place for a variety of clubs and organizations. An offshoot of the tree still exists at the community center.

From the very beginning, Campbell has been shaped by the standards of its various church congregations. Today, interdenominational gatherings are held annually at Thanksgiving and on Good Friday at which members of different faiths come together for the betterment of all.

From its earliest beginnings, Campbell was a literary community. In 1905, the Campbell Country Woman’s Club organized to promote women’s issues and provide a building for the Campbell Free Library. Once the library project was completed, the Woman’s Club started the Campbell Museum in 1964. In addition to the Country Woman’s Club, Campbell had a variety of other service clubs, such as the International Order of Odd Fellows, Pundita Circle, Campbell Kiwanis Club and more.

In 1952, the encroachment of surrounding cities encouraged town residents to support incorporation. On March 28, 1952, the City of Campbell officially incorporated. There was not much money to support the newly-formed city. The first public building in the city was Firehouse #1, which still stands today on Central Avenue by Civic Center Drive. In this small building, the city clerk, police and fire departments coexisted. Today, the building serves as the Campbell Historical Museum. By 1956, City Hall moved into the 1892 Congregational Church, where it remained until the bond issue of 1967 provided the money needed to build the current City Hall.

Campbell no longer has orchards and canneries, but instead tranquil subdivisions provide a variety of housing options for residents, and a balanced group of businesses provide employment opportunities. Within the incorporated boundaries of Campbell where history is alive and treasured, just under 40,000 residents live, work and thrive.

The Campbell Heritage Theatre opened to rave reviews in February 2004. The beautifully renovated facility has 800 seats and a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system.

The historic Ainsley House was built in 1925 on the northeast corner of Hamilton and Bascom Avenues, and was moved to 300 Grant St. between City Hall and Campbell Avenue in 1990.

Housed in the former firehouse is the Campbell Historical Museum, displaying historical artifacts of Cambell’s early settlements, agriculture, education, early business equipment and aspects of past daily life.

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN CAMPBELL

Downtown Campbell is a vibrant shopping and entertainment district featuring many historical landmarks and a diverse selection of shops, services and restaurants. Centered around the historical birthplace of the City of Campbell, remnants of the past are visible on every block of Downtown Campbell. The Downtown Cambell Business Association (DCBA), comprised of almost 100 businesses, keeps the downtown area energized with organized daily, weekly and monthly events.

In Historic Downtown Campbell, you’ll find tree lined walkways with charming sidewalk cafes and coffee houses, fabulous restaurants, wonderful shops and stylish boutiques. Whether you’re here to shop, dine or just hang out, you’ll have a wonderful time in Downtown Campbell.

CAMPBELL WATER TOWER

First Street and Orchard City Drive

In 1892, Benjamin Campbell formed the Campbell Water Co., Campbell’s first utility company, and the 130-foot water tower from the Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Company has become a symbol for Historic Downtown Campbell, as it is visible throughout the area. The adjacent Water Tower Plaza complex, built in the late 1800s and occupied by Hyde Cannery/Sunsweet Corp., represented one of the largest fruit drying and packaging facilities in the world.

Recycle Books | 2021 Business of the Year

Recycle Bookstore has been serving California readers for four decades, including 17 years in Campbell. Its close ties to the community were recognized with the Campbell Chamber of Commerce’s 2021 Business of the Year Award.

It’s an intimate relationship, says owner Eric Johnson. “We are right there in front every day interacting with customers, buying and selling books, which are brought in to us from our reading community. And since books come directly from our community, the books reflect the readers diversity and interests, as well,” he says.

Recycle handles new books, but the main focus is on used books. “Since we rely on people to bring us books, that really ties us to our community and ties them to us. Customers not only receive trade credit but also a sense of contributing to their local bookstore,” he says.

The Business of the Year Award validates the passion Recycle Bookstore’s staff brings to its operation. “We really come to work with a sense of joy, knowing that today will be another day where a young reader will buy a book and travel to distant lands and experience new ways of living that will open their eyes to the wonder of life and love, says Johnson. “Or that a mature reader will find just the right book to allow them to get lost in a great story or explore some obscure aspect of history or philosophy that they are passionate about. We get to see this happen every day and that is supremely satisfying.”

The flow of books coming in means that customers always have new books to look at in various sections. That’s one of the great benefits of a used bookstore, says Johnson. “Things are always changing. That gives it a good energy.”

The 3,000-square-foot Campbell store stocks some 50,000 titles, with strong sections in science fiction, mystery, literature, art, children’s, history, science, gardening and spirituality, plus lots of books in other sections, as well. The store supports the community by donating books to school and others in need and participating in local festivals by always offering a comfortable place to rest and enjoy music on the First Street stage. Recycle also operates a headquarters store in San Jose.

One of the great joys for Johnson is watching children at the Campbell location view books from outside then seeing their excitement as they come into the store and sit down and read them.

“Nothing makes my heart melt into a pile of emotional goo more than seeing a young reader sitting in the corner of the store completely captivated by the book they are reading,” he says. “There is no more intense and focused reader than a kid who is lost in the world of a book. It is almost as if there is a forcefield around the young reader protecting them from the outside world, keeping them safe in their reading bubble.”

The community connection is a successful recipe for Recycle Books, so don’t expect major changes, says Johnson. “We are just going to keep on doing what has been working.”

Sports Basement | 2022 Business of the Year

One of the reasons our store has done well in Campbell, we have a very passionate staff that loves getting outdoors and sharing that experience with our customers,” says Rich DeBorba, manager of Sports Basement’s Campbell location, winner of the Campbell Chamber of Commerce’s 2022 Business of the Year Award. DeBorba, a 20-year veteran of the company, accepted the award at the 55th annual Celebrate Campbell gala.

The business was founded in 1998 by a group of friends to cater to like-minded people who want to enjoy the outdoors without paying an arm and a leg for gear. Since then, Sports Basement has remained true to its roots, growing from a one-off shop in a San Francisco warehouse open only on the weekends to 10 fully-stocked Bay Area locations. Sports Basement’s eleventh store, an 80,000-square-foot store in Orange County, opened in 2022. The stores offer a wide selection of sports gear, an equipment rental program and full-blown ski shops and bike shops in house.

Comfy couches, fixtures built from recycled materials and hand-drawn signs, along with passionate staffers, are hallmarks of all locations, says DeBorba, who opened the Campbell store just over a decade ago.

Sports Basement is the place for seasoned outdoor athletes and for those who have never run, bicycled, skied or snowboarded, says DeBorba. “We want to be inclusive to people who are new to the outdoors. We can really help guide them in their new adventures.”

“All of our staff bring their passion and expertise to work, so you know that when you need advice on gearing up, you’re not getting a sales pitch; you’re getting guided to the right equipment by someone who’s been there.”

Sports Basement locations are a hub for local clubs, non-profits and corporate partners, and host more than 7,000 events a year. Weekly run groups and ride groups leave from the store, and the company runs buses to the Tahoe ski area.

DeBorba says Sports Basement provides him the “great privilege of donating a lot back to our community.” Under the company’s Basmenteers loyalty program, 10% of every dollar a consumer spends is donated to schools and local non-profits. Through this program and their partnerships for their events, fests and races, Sports Basement has given back more than $10 million dollars.

The Business of the Year Award, designed to give credit to those who dedicate their time and donate their services for the betterment of the Campbell community, recognizes the contributions of Sports Basement’s management and staff to making Campbell a great place to live and enjoy the outdoors.

Mark Thornton | 2021 Citizen of the Year

Mark Thornton, honored as the Campbell Chamber of Commerce 2021 Citizen of the Year, moved to Hollister in September 2022. He considers himself “more or less retired,” but that hasn’t stopped him from maintaining his Campbell community connections.

Thornton, who served in leadership at Campbell’s Home Church for more than 20 years with stints as elder, board member and youth pastor, is still involved in the youth ministry’s annual mission trip to San Vicenti in Baja, Mexico, a tradition he helped launch in 1995. His work at the church also included the afterschool program and the food ministry, including an additional food outreach during the pandemic.

“I’ll keep doing the Mexico trip as long as I can,” he says. Besides the benefits to the families served in Mexico and the mission trip participants, “helping maintain ties in Campbell” is a bonus.

Looking back at his years in Campbell, where he and his wife ran the Prairie Queen Quilt Shop from 2005 to 2017, Thornton remembers fondly “how everybody came together and put aside differences. Everybody wanted to make it a better place to live. It was a blast, working with all those different people with different backgrounds.”

Thornton was a leader in helping the Downtown Campbell Business Association put on the Carol of Lights, Bunnies and Bonnets, Creepy Crawly, and Wine Walks. He offers a special shoutout to the Campbell Public Works crew that assisted in many park clean-up days in which he was involved.

Other projects included volunteering with the Campbell Chamber on events such as Boogie Festival and Octoberfest and helping run the Campbell Toy Program and Night to Shine.

“There were a lot of people in different fields that got involved to make sure the events we put on came off without a hitch. It was really kind of neat,” he recalls.

Thornton continued to work at church in Campbell until February of this year. Now that he’s full-time in Hollister, he and his wife are enjoying spending time with their two grown children and six grandchildren. Plus, he says, “There’s still plenty to do at the ranch. It’s getting there.”

After the busy years in Campbell running a business, working at the church and volunteering in the community, he and his wife also enjoy leisure activities like gardening and hiking with their two dogs.

As to getting involved in his new community, Thornton admits he still has a yen for lending a hand. “I haven’t gotten as plugged in as I’d like to be,” he says.

Campbell’s loss just might be Hollister’s gain.

Nicholas Welzenbach | 2022 Citizen of the Year

“Showing up,” says Nicholas Welzenbach, Campbell’s 2022 Citizen of the Year, is one of the most important things a person can do. “It’s a better way to raise your children,” he says. “Let them know how to be involved in your community, rather than take a back seat.”

Honored at the Chamber’s Celebrate Campbell gala, Welzenbach regularly shows up in Campbell and neighboring Los Gatos, where he serves as managing partner of Darling Fischer in Campbell and Los Gatos as well as Los Gatos Memorial Park. He serves on chamber boards in both communities and is an active Los Gatos Rotarian.

Showing up puts you in good company, says the second-generation funeral professional.

“There are a lot of incredible folks in the communities I get to serve. A better vantage point in the communities I get to live in is showing up with the people who show up.”

The people who show up get things done, as exemplified by the Campbell Chamber of Commerce, he says. “It is truly a ‘for-business organization.’ The Campbell Chamber is where the rubber meets the road,” fostering business-to-business and business-to-consumer relationships.

Welzenbach also serves on the Campbell Veteran Memorial Foundation board. “It’s always an exciting project to acknowledge those who served,” he says.

Welzenbach has been serving families as a funeral professional for more than 20 years, beginning his career in San Diego. He and his wife, Kendall, relocated to the Bay Area 15 years ago. At Darling Fischer, he and his staff work daily to care for families and to reinvent funeral services around celebrations of life, finding new and unique ways to tell their loved ones’ stories.

The reinvention of funeral traditions extends to the facilities. “We have done some massive renovations,” says Welzenbach. “We have transformed our places from ‘Gosh, do I have to do my service here?’ to ‘Gosh, can I have my service here?’”

The facilities include open, light-filled rooms and gourmet serving kitchens. “We believe people can be sad in a well-lit space,” Welzenbach says. Families leave with a bottle of wine and a candle they can light and toast their loved one. “It’s care for the living,” says Welzenbach, and “it has worked very, very well.”

Funeral and cemetery service are Mr. Welzenbach’s life work and passion, but his first love is his family. It’s important to spend time with wife Kendall, their daughter Audrey, 11, and son Lachlan, 9.

Showing up for families, including his own, and for the communities he serves, is what matters for Campbell’s 2022 Citizen of the Year.
