Welcome
Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce Welcomes You to Curry County
Why do we do what we do?
The Chamber exists for two reasons:
One is to provide our members with access to opportunities that will increase their visibility and help them make new connections that lead to the growth of their business. We provide important business information and resources, marketing opportunities, educational seminars, and online presence to support member businesses. We are the voice for our local business community. We aim to be a positive example of an up-to-date Chamber of Commerce.
The other is to proactively work to ensure our area is forward-moving, prospering, and is a place that people want to live and do business. The result of a thriving and growing area is that people with good jobs will buy homes, cars, take out loans, eat at restaurants and shop in stores – ultimately, people looking for the products and services offered by businesses in our community. What we do is not only important, but essential to the growth and stability of the Southern Oregon Coast.
Benefits of being a Chamber member:
Through active Chamber membership, you become a part of a nationally recognized organization that provides its members a voice to help shape their communities and more.
The Chamber is usually the first place that people reach out to when looking for direction (our members/businesses and services are the resources that help, and this symbiotic relationship provides great opportunity to the member and our society).

Brookings-Harbor, OREGON

Location & Economy
Brookings is located on the beautiful Southern Oregon Coast, six miles north of the California border on U.S. Highway 101. It is bounded by the crystal clear Chetco River and Port of Brookings Harbor to the south and to the north, by Harris Beach State Park. Brookings (elevation 129’) was incorporated in 1951 and lies on the north side of the Chetco River. The community of Harbor lies on the south side of the Chetco River.
Brookings originally thrived on the lumber and commercial and sports fishing industries. Lily bulb farming was introduced in the 1920s. Although dwindling, lumber and fishing are still strong factors in the City’s economy. Because of these stable industries, Brookings is less dependent on the tourist trade than many Oregon coast cities.
Known as the Banana Belt of Oregon
Due to its mild climate in relation to the rest of the coast, Brookings has weather patterns that deliver some of the warmer temperatures along the Oregon Coast. It’s not uncommon to encounter a 70-degree day in January/February. Studies have shown the north-to-south orientation of the Chetco River mouth and the town of Brookings plays a large role in the high temperatures recorded, and the reason the effect is localized. During most of the year, a sea breeze sets up along the coastline with prevailing surface winds from the northwest.
This is also due mostly to its situation at the foot of the Klamath Mountains, from which winds compress and warm the air flowing onto Brookings. This is called the Brookings Effect or Chetco Effect, similar to the warm dry Santa Ana winds of coastal Southern California. Daffodils and other bulbs generally bloom in February. In the lowlands, some fog is common in the summer while the coastal hills are generally sunny and cool.
Population
The City of Brookings population (according to the U.S. Census Bureau of 7/1/2021) is 6,837. The total population of the Brookings-Harbor south coast area is estimated to be more than 13,000.
Average Rainfall
Brookings, Oregon gets 73.55 inches of rain, on average, per year (U.S. average = 38 inches). Brookings averages 1 inch of snow per year (U.S. average = 28).
Average Temperature
In Brookings, the summers are comfortable, dry, and mostly clear and the winters are long, colder, wet and windy, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 43°F to 67°F and is rarely below 36°F or above 75°F. Annually Brookings has 191 sunny days (US average 205).
Airport:
Brookings Airport is a public-use airport located one mile northeast of Brookings. The Gold Beach airport is located in Gold Beach, Oregon. Other nearby airports are North Bend (KOTH), Bandon (SO5), Brookings (KBOK), and Crescent City, CA (KCEC).
The nearest regional airport to Brookings is Del Norte County Regional Airport in Crescent City, California (about 30 minutes south). The nearest international airport to Brookings is the Rogue Valley International - Medford Airport, which is approximately a two and a half hour drive from Brookings utilizing Route 199.
City History
The community of Brookings was originally established in 1913 by John E. Brookings, cousin to Robert S. Brookings of the Brookings Institute, when he moved his lumber business from the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. One of the first things John Brookings did when he relocated was to hire renowned architect, Bernard Maybeck, to lay out the street design for the core area of the city.
The city of Brookings has grown in population and area; it is now the largest city in Curry County. Much of the city’s population growth since the 1980s, when Brookings was “discovered” as a great place to live, is not only the result of retirees moving to the area, but also due to the many individuals who have moved here from many walks of life.
Our little coastal gem has attracted stay-at-home tech professionals, city dwellers, artists, outdoor enthusiasts, musicians and those seeking to relocate to a more affordable coastal lifestyle.
The area’s history is chronicled in a book, CHETCO, written in 2011 by Mike Adams and is available through the Chetco Valley Historical Society.
A Walk Through Time
Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Nobuo Fujita Bombing and the Forging of Peace
By Mia Katz
In September 2022, a number of activities and events were held in Brookings, Oregon to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the bombing mission of Nobuo Fujita, a Japanese pilot during World War II who catapulted from the Japanese submarine I-25 to drop bombs from a seaplane near the coast of southern Oregon. The initial firebombing, which took place on Sept. 9, 1942 on Oregon’s Mount Emily, would be known as the first aerial bombing of the United States mainland by a foreign power. (Fujita is reported to have dropped two bombs at the time - the location of the other bomb is unknown.)
Fujita’s release of the bomb struck a fir tree, creating smoldering fires and a crater about three feet in diameter and one foot deep. Forest officials quickly controlled the fires. Reports share Fujita returned a few weeks later for another unsuccessful firebombing about 50 miles west of Cape Blanco. The plan to cause devastation and divert fire fighters and funds away from the war effort failed. At the time, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for a news blackout regarding the firebombings to protect morale.
Yet in remembering this history, Brookings residents can also recall how their city was unique in transforming this act of hate in their region into one of peace.
In 1962, Brookings-Harbor Jaycees welcomed Fujita to the town’s Azalea Festival, warranting a congratulations by President John F. Kennedy for the promoting of international friendship. In May of that year, Fujita presented his family’s more than 400-year-old samurai sword to the city, now on display at the Chetco Public Library. The acts would be the beginning of a lasting connection between Fujita and the town, with Fujita becoming an honorary citizen of the city on Sept. 22, 1997.
Fujita passed away on Sept. 30, 1997 and later, some of his ashes were placed at the bomb site.
On Sept. 9, 2022, the Chetco Public Library unveiled a new case for Fujita’s sword, which includes a large-scale model of the submarine and plane used in the bombing. The library also sponsored two screenings of Director Ilana Sol’s award-winning 2019 documentary, “Samurai in the Oregon Sky,” which tells the story of how Fujita would find a 35-year friendship with residents of a town he intended to destroy.
Sol, a filmmaker and archival producer living in Portland, Oregon, recorded the tale as a way of preserving and remembering this little-known, historic, remarkable reconciliation.
She shares one thing that surprised her initially was the fact that regular citizens became so involved.
“The people involved in this peace process were not politicians or military leaders,” she says. “They were regular civilians who decided to do something to further the cause of peace, and they made it happen.”
Southwest Oregon’s Umpqua Joe 1859, a local chapter of E Clampus Vitus (Clampers), also held a plaque dedication in remembrance of the World War II firebombing. Founded in 1849, Clampers is a men’s fraternal organization dedicated to the study and preservation of the heritage of the American West.
When asked about the lessons to be learned from this relationship between Fujita and Brookings, Ken Kudrna, Past President of Umpqua Joe Chapter 1859, shares that it is the role of Clampers to preserve history, and not justify or romanticize it in any way.
“War is very real and the possibility of it happening again are likely (look at Ukraine),” he says. “Fujita (was) obviously a person with a good heart (as most soldiers today are good persons), but during war, an extreme hatred for each other can be created. Fujita and the people that accepted him are in reality loving/forgiving people.”
“This story teaches us two important lessons about the peace-making process,” Sol adds. “First, it shows the importance of former enemies meeting face-to-face and getting to know each other as people. Second, it shows that peace is not a quick and easy process. It takes time and it takes ongoing effort and work. Mr. Fujita worked hard during the last decade of his life to keep this relationship going, and this is a vital part of creating lasting peace.”

Before the transformation that took place 11 years ago, the organization had its start as something resembling a county dog pound, with a high kill rate and virtually no adoption program. The late Catherine Powers, a local woman, ultimately petitioned county officials for control of the shelter and established a 501c3 nonprofit. After Power’s passing only a year and a half after the nonprofit’s founding, it is WRAR’s legacy to continue Power’s altruistic work.
WRAR has a very strong presence in Curry County that relies heavily on volunteerism and the generosity of our community. Donations and volunteers are needed and appreciated throughout the year. For more information, visit wildriversanimalrescue.org.

Nature’s Coastal Holiday Festival of Lights
For 25 years, from late November through December, an increasing number of residents and visitors have been drawn to Brookings Oregon’s Azalea Park to witness the Nature’s Coastal Holiday Festival of Lights – an annual event known as the “best holiday light show on the Oregon Coast.”
The international event, which features more than 3 million lights and hundreds of holiday displays, is organized by Nature’s Coastal Holiday – a nonprofit corporation with a mission to bring the spirit of giving to the community. The Festival of Lights has grown from a crowd size of 7,120 in its debut year to 25,000 in 2017, its largest year yet, attracting visitors nationally and worldwide. Founded by volunteers Olivia Abbott and Keith Pepper, the Festival of Lights continues to be a completely volunteer coordinated and staffed event. Proceeds from the event are used to improve Azalea Park and support other community organizations. In 2022 it ran from Nov. 25 through Dec. 27, nightly from 5-9 p.m.

Annual Pirates of the Pacific Festival
Since 2010, for three days a year, pirates invade the Port of Brookings Harbor Boardwalk!
In 2022, the Pirates of the Pacific Festival went into its 11th year (canceled in 2020 due to covid) – bringing pirate fun and mayhem to the area. This annual event always takes place on the second weekend in August and runs from Friday-Sunday. It features live music on two stages, vendors, food vendors, two beer gardens (with rum at one of them), mermaids, a pirate village complete with reenactors, cannons, and of course lots of pirates!
The event was created by “Capt. Curry” Bruce Ellis, owner/publisher of the Insider of Southern Oregon entertainment newspaper and “Capt. Squishee” Mike Moran. Ellis reports The Pirates of the Pacific Festival attracts more than 20,000 locals and tourists to the Port each year and brings revenue to Brookings Harbor, Crescent City and Gold Beach, filling hotels and bringing customers to local businesses and establishments in all of these cities and surrounding areas. For more information, visit Pirates Of The Pacific Festival, Port of Brookings Harbor.
The Azalea Festival
The Azalea Festival is a longtime community event that celebrates the beauty of the Southern Oregon Coast and has been awarded “The Oregon Heritage Tradition” award. Since 1939, the community has celebrated this event over Memorial Day weekend with activities that include a parade, street vendor fair, food trucks, car show, air show, shrimp feed, deep pit BBQ, art and quilt shows, book sales, live music, and of course the blooming of our azalea flowers! Azalea Festival strives to be fun for the whole family in all age groups! For more information, visit https://www.brookings.or.us/342/Azalea-Festival.
BH Chamber Annual Shrimp Feed
The Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce has been involved with the annual Azalea Festival for many years – since the festival first began in 1939. Over the years, the festival has grown, and offers many different activities, with one of the favorites being the parade – followed by the Shrimp Feed in Azalea Park. Following the parade, people gather at the stage in the park for a) parade award presentations and b) the ever-popular Shrimp Feed - put on by the Chamber of Commerce. Volunteers prepare a delicious shrimp salad luncheon – with hot dogs as an alternative – and people can enjoy their lunch, the beautiful azaleas in the park, and the festivities over the long weekend.
